I find it unfortunate that people are even attempting to look at technique over design. That creates a bias where someone with a better design might get shown up by someone who just fills their signature with haphazard techniques, because people are so focused on eliminating "simple" signatures that they forget about design. Bias affects you even if you try not to think about it. Subtle techniques also suffer from this kind of bias. Technique is only half, and sometimes not even half, of making a signature.

There's no point of good technique if the person doesn't have the right artistic knowledge of composition to go along with it. It's not appealing, and it shouldn't get voted over a simplistic piece with good composition.

That being said, I am aware that there is a need for rules that restrict the "Crop signature" idea, as that isn't their own original work [as far as original work goes in a signature contest] in the first place. But a lot of people forget that technique isn't all there is to creating signatures [or any type of art or design in general]. Composing takes up much more effort and is actually conductive towards a better looking piece.

Overall, I'm just hoping that technique doesn't get emphasized over composition in this competition. I do agree that there needs to be restrictions against crop signatures, but the idea that merit is based off of technique is flawed. There are plenty of subtle techniques that probably won't get noticed if focus was put on technique, and if people are focused on priortizing technique over aesthetics, then they're missing out on the idea that a lot of effort is put to make it pleasing to the eye in the first place.

Two new topics of discussion!

1. File Size limits - I've been considering allowing the size limits to increase to 200,000 bytes and increasing allowable dimensions to 500x250. Considering we have a larger and larger amount of animated entries each month, expanding the file size limit could allow more freedom to create images with less hair pulling.

What this does mean is that SOTM entries could not be used as normal forum signatures without optimizing, and I would be shifting responsibility for people to obey forum signature rules away from the contest and putting that on the contestant.

2. Non-anime sources - We've had a few non anime images used as entries in the past, but I've been considering opening up the contest to any image (non offensive of course), as long as it follows the theme.

My thinking behind these changes is to allow a greater variety of personal freedom in creating entries for the contest. Please let me know your thoughts, comments, complaints, suggestions, etc., on these two ideas.

Specifically, I'm looking for responses centered around these questions:

Should the size limits stay the way they are now, or should they be increased?
Would increasing the size limits put some contestants at a disadvantage?
Would increasing the size limits cause potential problems with abuse?
Would allowing non-anime sources change the focus of the contest?

If you can think of other questions feel free to pose them (or answer them).

If it's clearly stated that the sigs in question are not AS safe, then I dont see why increasing the limits should be a problem.

Then again, there will always be someone that will request a further increase; Regardless of how much you decide to expand the current limits. >_< !

I'd acutally prefer the size limits stay the same. It gives people more of a challenge to get their sigs within AnimeSuki's normal limits.

I'm all for open palettes.

I have nothing against the file size changes, it'll allow members to save their image at the highest quality possible without having to worry about pixelations or noises. But I don't know about increasing the dimension, could it still be called SOTM if it isn't obeying AS signature's dimension regulation.

As for allowing non anime sigs in the contest, I see no problem with it. There's plenty of (amazing) non anime sigs hovering around AS, the contest is afterall SOTM (Signature of the Month), not BASOTM (Best Anime Signature of the Month).

I have a question, what about text only sigs (with just a bg and no renders)... not included or under non anime sigs.

I'd be fine with an increase. It'll shift the competition towards being more of a general art competition, but that isn't a bad thing. I'd also like to see what the animators can do when they're not stuck at 50 kb. With a 200 kb limit I might even do some animations of my own, although the last time I did them was ages ago on a forum that had no signature limits...

While I'm a few sigmakers that stick to animation based signatures, and its a headache too I admit, I say that stick to the current signature limit, AS compliance. We are making signatures for use here. Also, I think its a good practice to learn how to maximised the quality while staying within limit. Without any optimization, most 500x160 will reach around 100kb, yet optimized, it can fit in 50kb. If we push the limit, newbies will never learn to optimized their work. I see the filesize limit as one of the challenge here.

As for non anime submission, I said my opinion before, stick to the use of seiyuu or cosplay. All others are really dont fit this forum.

Of course if we could bribe the mods to acknowledge this sotm and allow the first place signature to be use without file size restriction

I am against the new file size/signature size limit too, even though it does bring out better quality and might be able to see more different kinds of sigs, but like Hakuryu said, it does give a challenge and thus makes this competition more meaningful

Non-anime sigs are perfectly fine with me

@KiNA- most likely not going to happen

Keep the size and filesize limits, it get's more creative and challenging that way.
Non-anime sigs is fine though. Brings diversity.

I think that the limits are OK. Can't really see the point of the competition if you're unable to use the entries on this forum. Can't say that I haven't been agonizing over the filesize limit but still I'd leave it be unless you're planning on increasing the maximum filesize allowed on the forums as well. Can't see how you can do that since the limit is quite lenient as it is.

There could be a place for generic graphics competition separately. How popular it would be? How often would one be held? etc. are questions I don't have answers though but just an idea...

Just to point out since I'm not sure some understand, these are just suggestions, not actual changes. I'm not saying these are going to happen, I just want to see what people think.

With that, it's been good feedback so far.

I'm late. D:

Well I'll say keep the file size limit, because despite all our complaints, we all enjoy hair pulling. Kinda.

Considering the responses so far, the rules will be staying the same. Thanks for the input everyone.

I am pretty sure that this came up before but for next one contest is it possible for each sigs to be anonymous? Of course each sigs creator has their own style so even if without name you could tell who done it or not sometimes, but I still want to see what will happen if it was anonymous.

The only way that is possible if we all mailed our entry to Solace for him to post it or to be criticized (for those that would like help) during the entry phase. Also the anonymity of it would be gone if people decided to use their sig before the voting was over.

Unless you can get everyone to agree not to use it before the voting results are through, that's the only way to keep it anonymous. That would be calling for a change of rules, where one cannot display their sig until the votings are done.

I think somebody had this idea before but it was somehow shot down.

There's pros and cons to both, but the main reason I shot down anonymous signatures is because it discourages people from using the entry thread to improve their skills and entries.

I still leave the option open for people to PM me if they wish to stay anonymous until voting, however.

How about this as a solution, the person pm you the sig and you could post it to show it to people then they could still be anonymous but people could still look at their sig and help them fix it.

You imagine the amount of work Solace would have to do for that?

Not a possible solution imo especially with all the hassle, what if the creator wants to talk about his/her creations as well?

It can work but the amount of work it would need is not worth it imo.
