3rd Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
2nd Clannad

and suggests Shakugan no Shana - Damn, that series started up STRONG. I didn't go asking around but 2 of my friends agree that it was very interesting from the first episode.

Naruto - Because of the one-shot probably
Nodame Cantabile - Can't remember actually, but it seems like it did

and uh yeah.

Two anime that I personally think opened up strong are The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and SaiKano. I cannot watch SaiKano's first episode without getting teary now.

It depends what you consider a strong open, like an open that jumps right into the action, or an open that makes you want to watch the next episode as quickly as possible, or an open with a cliffhanger of some sort.

Soukou no Strain, I'd have to say has one of the best opens. It was pretty crazy.

Evangelion has a strong open and an even better second episode.

One that recently finished airing opens up strong, despite it not being an action anime is Spice and Wolf. It made me addicted to the show, even though I hated following ongoing series.

I think most mainstream shonen shows have strong openings, like Kenshin, Naruto, Bleach and D.Gray-man.

I second Code Geass for obvious reasons.
