PS3 On a PC Monitor is it doable ?

Well I know in the past you could do this with many consoles but it seems the PS3 is a new beast.

What I want to do is play my PS3 on my Acer LCD Widescreen monitor instead of forking over a couple hundred USD for an HDTV (can't afford one yet)

My Monitor - Acer AL1916W
Also check this link this guys is playing his 360 on this same monitor so I am hoping I can so the same with my PS3.
Link: http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Ha...al1916w/6.html

If anyone has any ideas or link's to products that will enable me to do this you would have just saved me a couple hundred bucks.

Thanks

Your monitor only has vga. the Ps3 has both HDMI and component output. Easiest way would be component to Vga.
Last item on this page Item No: BC-VGCRXY00 but check around for more, because that's a bit $$ I've seen them for cheaper.

Your Ps3 component cable will have Male connectors. Plug it into the 3 ports of the adaptor and plug it into the VGA input of the monitor

The xbox has a vga cable so it's much more sraightforward. You can only get 1080p through HDMI

It will work, just not 1080p. His monitor can't handle it anyway. HDCP compliance allows you to get a picture just not in HD. You get SD. Once you run component HDCP is out the window because component doesn't output 1080p

Yeah I don't mind not getting 1080p at the moment once it will run my monitor for the time being that is well enough.

Also which one exactly am i looking for on this website, hobbes_fan ?

. Obviously there are cheaper ones so shop around. worst case scenario -You probably will only get 576i or p resolution so be warned But that shouldn't look too bad or at least be playable

Your options are HDfury, hdmi to vga transcoder, or a component to vga transcoder. I think some manufacture (mayflash?) actually sells a Wii and Ps3 component to vga cable, bascially the transcoder cirrcuit is hidden inside the connector shell.

http://www.hdfury.com/

note: if you want to use a vga transcoder, you need a tv as well, during setup. Use the green (sync on luma) connector and connect it to the composite input of your TV, then go to setting and set it to at least to 480p, or in your case 720p (only a few monitors do accept interlance signals), and connect the green connector back to the vga box.

You can run ps3 games on 1080p over component, as far as i know, just not the protected blu-ray movies.
Btw component to vga adapter, hobbes_fan listed, is just a connection adapter, it won't work if your monitor doesn't support component input via it's vga connector.

I use the XCM 1080p VGA box at the moment, but looking into getting the HD Box pro, since it does supportd e-interlancing (for the Wii and retro consoles). If you have a psp-2000, you might want to look at the newer XCM 1080p VGA box, that includes the cable for the psp as well.

Wow that is alot of info to process. Well I am for getting the most that I can get but what would actually work ? As you said hobbes_fan suggestion would not work. Hdfury seems viable so I guess i will read up on it. But ifanyone else has a suggestion or two that would be great !

Thanks for so far.

Here some alternative options:

HD Box pro
supports deinterlancing and probably upscaling or resizing and apparently proper transcoding, no resolution change. It could be beneficial for LCDs since it could reduce input lag, with its resising output feature.
http://www.hdboxpro.com/

Mayflash VGA cable
Component to Vga cable, transcoder build in. Doesn't need external powersupply, since it draws the required electricity from the multi-av port from the consoles. Only supports progressive video input.
http://www.mayflash.com/vgabox/vga004/vga004.htm

Mayflash VGA transcoder
Basically the same as the cable, only for progressive video input. But it can be used for any device that has component output.
http://www.mayflash.com/vgabox/vga001/vga001.htm

Xcm 1080p VGA box
Similar to the Mayflash VGA box, but supports 1080i as well. Comes with component cable for 360, PS3, Wii and PSP-2000. However doesn't have a vga cable included and draws it power from a usb port.
http://www.xcm.cc/xcm_1080p_vga_box.htm

Neoya X2VGA2
Another VGA box. But has a 480i kind of thing that helps during set up of the device, but is not recommended to use for gaming.
http://www.x2vga.com/

Hdfury
Hdmi to VGA. Kind of unique, comes in serveral different versions, from simple HDMI to vga doggle, BNC version to specific console cable versions.
http://www.hdfury.com/

There are probably alot more options, since most of them are manufactuered in South East Asia, cleaper clones are probably available as well.

Alternatively getting a LCD with component or Hdmi/(HDCP)DVI-D support could be another good option.

What about nonbox options? I have a 21 inch standard television and a 22 inch widescreen monitor and have been looking for a way to just use my monitor instead of my television for all my viewing. Is there any cards that can handle stuff past 480 for input? I could care less about recording, just something that will have good picture quality for television and consoles.

I'm wondering if to go with this Item
http://www.renchi.com/renchi/Other_G...ble_V3_XCM.htm

Would I still need to buy seperate component cables or will this handle everything ?

I was going for the XCM VGA box but then I read something about it's poor cable quality.

Edit : nvm I just noticed the Item I linked seemed to only be a switch between consoles... I don't see a VGA Connector anywhere..

Yep, that is only a combi component cable for all consoles, not a transcoder.
You can try this combi cable on play-asia, but try reading some review, before deciding.

Also My monitor maxes out at 1440 x 900 what would be the highest HD resolution I would be able to get ?

Max would be 720p. Before you order something, try setting your desktop resolution to 1280x720 and see if the picture is fine.
