Well, I'm glad the anime has good director, because the movie wasn't so great. This show does have a lot of cliches to it, but I hope that it can be action-packed and thrilling, just like I hoped the movie would be ~ !

Oh, Christ, this series is such an incredibly anachronistic trash. 8)

At first I simply couldn't believe I was really watching the 1st episode of Ultraviolet Code 044, thinking that I perhaps was duped and it was a wrong video, but no, it actually was it and it actually was that bad.

Antiquated character designs, rubbish animation, deliciously hokey sci-fi plot, villains in old school large sunglasses, persistent frontal nudity (relatively small chest, though, for once in a while)... This felt like the worst type of late-80's, early-90's OVA, but without the money or imagination.

It's like... the last 15 years never happened and anime is still THAT unrefined and underproduced.

The OP was nice though. And sung in English.

All in all, stay away from this "work" unless you are hopeful for some blast from the awful past.

Isn't the director the guy who did the Golgo 13 movies? I heard he was doing an Ultraviolet animu.

But it s unfortunate they picked ultraviolet of all movies. After Equilibrium, I was hoping for another good action movie from Kurt Wimmer, but what we got was... ._.

This is where stuff like Highlander has its roots. Why? Because many Western fans would say that this is when anime was at its best. (Not me, that for sure!) Maybe they're eyeing the US market?

You managed to turn my neutral curiosity into morbid curiosity. I should go and grab a raw.

I want to post here before people think that Mr Prophet is actually right about this being so bad. Let me rephrase that: before people think that his/her opinion is the only possible one on the subject.

I thought this was quite stylish. Clearly reminiscent of old-school animation, but not actually the same, it didn't seem to me. Very simplified, for cost reduction, perhaps. But to me it looked good. Quite artistic, in a 1930s sort of way.

The direction, with its sharp cuts, quick storytelling, multiple images, darkness, close angles, etc., may be "old-fashioned" in some ways, but shows that we might have lost something over the years. Of course, I haven't watched that much old anime, so perhaps I haven't grown tired of the style.

Not that the reminders of "socialist realism" in some of the character design are that welcome, but in this context I find them acceptable. Even the blocky feet. And I thought the sound design was excellent.

Basically, I think it's a matter of taste. Some people may require a more contemporary style. And I may not watch the whole series. But I thought this was an interesting and even somewhat moving first episode.

Of course, I am biased in favor of Paku Romi and the director of Oniisama e.

Since much of the drawing and animation was done by Chinese companies, I can imagine that they were delighted to get a chance to work with the old master. And Madhouse may like the idea of giving a set of cheaper animators a course in the old styles.

As a side note, I personally object to the objections to nudity. What's the big deal?

And Happy_Chip: no, to me it's nowhere near as bad as Wulong, which failed at a contemporary style rather than succeeding at an old one.

Yes, exactly. It's "Highlander Vengeance"-kind of bad. But without the feature film budget. Or even a decent TV budget.

Was I objecting? You are far too eager to jump to conclusions. I was merely saying that it reminded me of anime back in the day. Those OVAs were quite breast-happy, maybe because the directors felt liberated from the TV standards. Anyway, it was just a comment on the link between the olden style and this episode. 8)

PS: Also, "socialist realism"? 8) Are you sure that's the phrase you meant?

Decidedly awful is how I'd describe it too. There were so many terrible amateurish director 'tricks' that it felt like it was made by a first year art student. Combine that with the general feeling that the writers have their heads shoved so far up their own asses that they're breathing through their colon and just bleh.

I do kind of like the OP tune though. The animation sequence for it is pretty rubbish, but *shrug*

The movie version was atrocious ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0370032/ ).

Well, the story didn't sound so bad, quite the opposite - had GITS, Armitage + Claymore feel to it. Music was pretty good.
As for the visuals, I'd abstain from judging them based on a very LQ raw.

Perhaps you are more familiar with it than I, by having to live with whatever monumental remnants survive in Tallinn. But I am thinking of 1930s-40s Soviet posters, Soviet urban sculpture, and illustrations from the 1950s and 1960s in China, with blocky, heroic figures that remind me of the body shapes in this show. I do consider the use of the word "realism" in "socialist realism" to be unintentionally ironic, since it is not actually very realistic.

As for whether or not you were objecting to nudity, I am certainly coming to this from another movie, since I keep seeing people objecting to nudity in shows and keep wondering what's so wrong with it, except for the fact that it may prevent those people from watching shows they might otherwise like. But you did list "persistent frontal nudity" with "rubbish animation," so it seemed clear that you were objecting to it. Both old-style and bad, seemed to be the point of that list. The word "persistent" was a bit of clue, too. Beautifully chosen word, but with a clear implication that you wish the nudity persisted less.

Anyway, this is not my kind of show at the best of times, so perhaps I'm not familiar enough with the genre to know what's so bad about this episode. And I am always over-optimistic at the beginning of any season.

As far as the nudity goes, the issue I had with it is because it was totally nonsensical. She was either walking around outside, or naked. There were no in-betweens. Apparently the moment she steps inside, she strips to her skivvies. Even in drek like Kanokon, there's at least a narrative to follow. This was just "I'm inside, ergo I'm naked."

The readers of this thread must be now forming an opinion that this series is chock full of nude women, based on the amount of coverage this topic is getting. 8)

Sadly, it is not. It is neither the scandalously calculated in-your-face fanservice meant to lure fans (>70% of anime these days), nor is it any kind of sensuality that makes a very direct point about the feel of the characters (like Golgo 13).

It was a very casual scene of "oh, well, I sometimes walk around my apartment topless". It was neither arousing, not stylistically relevant, just one of those things that they've done a lot of times in the late 80's anime. Just like magical girls in the 90's and maids in the 00's. A sign of the times, zeitgeist.

And the look and feel of Ultraviolet hearkened to those times. Which was the point I was trying to make in the first place.

PS: No, seriously, people. This is not a show about naked women, despite the number of posts dedicated to the subject. Don't rush to watch it if that's what all you want. 8)

No need for sociological contemplation. It was simply ...

The OP has a nice song with some fancy animation done to it.
Story's ok so far... not much action..... (Don't like the female main character design one bit...)Will try a few more episodes because of the awesome OP.
