Which is the saddest death in an anime?

I don't know if there's anyone at all who will agree with me, but the saddest death I've seen is:

Gundam Seed

Spoiler:

Natarle's death. It was just so sad, how, even though she was on the "right" side in the end, she still had to die. She was just confused really, about whether to do her duty, or what she thought was right. Not deserving of a death. Not to mention that Murrue and the Archangel crew will never know that Natarle ended up being on their side. As much as I hated Fllay, I had kind of hoped she had survived, just so she could tell Murrue that it wasn't Natarle who ordered the shot that killed Mwu. Call me crazy, but, yeah...

Some other very sad deaths that have been said already:

Saikano

Spoiler:

Akemi. It was just... incredibly sad. Words cannot describe it. Felt so bad for her, how she had loved Shuuji longer than Chise, and yet had let Chise be with him instead of her... just horrible.

End of Evangelion

Misato. was very sad how she had been fighting to save the world this whole time, and then she was killed by regular soldiers, and not even an Angel. Because of Shinji's patheticness, she was killed. Damn you Shinji.

Also Maya's death was sad, but mainly just because she was such a nice person.

Asahina's death. It wouldn't of been so horrible if she hadn't written all that stuff... she was so innocent, not even knowing about the Dolems, the Murians, and all that stuff. Added to the fact that Ayato was the one who killed her, it was extremely sad.

Another sad one was Elvy, becase she was just a great character, and she had to go through seeing all her friends die before she finally did.

OMFG THEY KILLED OFF KENSHIN. That's more than enough reason. ;_; Kenshin is a REALLY REALLY REALLY GREAT GUY. Well besides the fact that he has orange hair, he is incredibly wise as anime bishounen go... and damn, it wasn't in the manga either. Typical otaku lament! Well you'd be pissed too.

Rurouni Kenshin Tsuiokuhen

Tomoe had a kind of screwed up life. But then again, she did partly screw it up herself I guess... still... it's damn sad, especially when it was Kenshin who killed her, albeit accidentaly. Gah. >_<

The death of Yukari (Take's girlfriend) is pretty tragic. For a while, the viewer gets the impression that she didn't care anymore. She was seeing other guys and had dropped out of school. However, when she gets a chance to strike back at the "enemy," we find out just how deeply scarred she was from Take's death.

Nobody can forget Akemi's death. At the end of episode 8, "That night, there was a huge earthquake in our town." To end an episode that way is telling us that something big is goind down. In episode 9 when Satomi asks Shuuji to go see her sister, then she starts crying and telling him to hurry... Akemi's confession interspersed with scenes of Shingo seeing his comrades get blown up and shot...

Nobody's mentioned the death of Tetsu. He knew of his impending death because Chise fortold it. When it happens, he knows it. He calls out to his wife Fuyumi (who was with Shuuji)... saying "it hurts," coughing up blood... horrible.

Hikaru No Go

Sai's death or rather departure... it was so full of meaning and yet soo depressing at the same time I didn't just tear like I usually do... I CRIED AND CRIED and CRIED for an hour... and CRIED some more and CRIED all the way to the end of the series.....

I just need to describe his disappearance to let this out completely
Sai had all along known that he would depart from this world but Hikaru just kept on taking him for granted up to the last few moments... Finally, after a tiring day, Hikaru went back to his bed room and was about to go to sleep when Sai said "Hikaru, lets just play a game.... please". Grumbling due to lack of sleep, Hikaru relunctantly obliges in his sleepiness and sets up the board. While playing, Sai starts to realise his purpose for being with Hikaru, he realised he was there to make Hikaru strong and no matter how jealous Sai was of Hikaru's ability to play, he had to leave... and then he thought to himself.. with this my job is done... and just before he left he said "Hikaru... Hikaru... can u hear me? Wake up... By the way.. its been fun...." and Sai dissapears...

I don't know how many ppl would find this sad... but I recommend you to watch it

The little girl, just seeing her in a makeshift coffin made me break down into tears. I have no mercy for Seita I find him personally responsible for his sisters death.

I agree with you on Grave of the Fireflys, I saw it at a Japanese film series, and the guy introducing it said "it showed how devoted Seita was to his sister and cared for her". I saw it the other way around she was devoted to him, and he seemed to take care of himself ahead of her.

there was when the older brother died, but you know he is going to die just by watching the opening, so it isn't as sad. you try not to become too developed into that character unless you are a masoshist, but he played such a strong, proud role throughout the movie that not becoming attached was hard if you have siblings yourself.

anyone ever see the Offspring AMV for Grave of the Fireflies with "Jennifer Lost the War"? after seeing the movie, that AMV was really something else....

Sorata dies a semi-useless death. Come on, I consider him the main guy in the entire series (Kamui was too much a coward/gay to be a main lead), and then they killed him off. He was technically the 'first character' to appear in the anime. The worst is the semi-useless part, I mean the bad guy is still alive after their encounter, drat.

Like everyone else, Haku and Zabuza (together). What makes it so sad though is that not only is it sad to see the character die, but after the fight w/ Sasuke and all the talk of bloodlines, you are also hyper-aware that killing a person, especially someone whose family has cultivated some skill or craft, is not just killing that person but also killing the history of an entire family. When Haku died, his advanced bloodline - a craft cultivated over hundreds of years by the self-sacrifice of his ancestors - is simply gone. And then Zabuza killing that guy even though his arms are busted.. and the flashbacks and stuff. Kakashi carrying Zabuza over to Haku. But the saddest image of all in that whole sequence is when Zabuza starts crying and Naruto sees Zabuza crying and starts crying too.

Cowboy Bebop

Julia. Yes, just Julia. Because you know the moment that you hear the gunshot, see her falling, and see the doves start flying up, Spike is dead too. That scene is the climax of the ending of Bebop for me. The box has been opened and the cat is definitely dead. All that remains is to see how it happens.

Spring and Chaos

It's only near-death, but the scene where Kenji is lying in the field and hallucinating and freezing to death and seeing the world as it is.. I always feel myself about to cry when the trains burst out of the ground and spiral towards the heavens.. I think it's one of the most beautiful moments in an anime ever. Of course.. that's not such a sad scene. But it involves death. Kind of. So it's relevant. Kind of.
