Image Hosting Sites Like Akibakko And Danbooru (Possible Scams)

Well I was using Akibakko for a while and it was really great, but now it appears that the webmaster may have scammed it's donators as I tried to go there today and there is a Username and Password prompt with an indecipherable vague clue as to what it is that says "Beta". Here's all I could find out as to what was going on from the sites base most page which is the only thing left open:

Quote:
Thank you

Thank you for ruining everything. Everything was a mistake to begin with. In this case, we're introducing "private audience mode".

Here's the game, you have to guess the username/password in order to enter the site. It'll be changed from time to time.

Read the hint, and good luck trying! Don't tell anyone the password, or it'll change again.
So now all those people that donated must just be furious or possibly have a password themselves. I ask, what's the point of contributing to such an image site if the webmaster is just going to lock you out and make it impossible to know the password. And why such a lame explanation. I swear these sites, Danbooru and the like are not ponying up at all on their original plans.

Speaking of Danbooru, they have now introduced a more privatized scheme as well where you have to request special permission to use certain tags and such, which renders a significant portion of the sites content unviewable. This seems to run contrary to the original plan of making it a public image repository doesn't it?

What's with all this sudden locked content folks when once there were promises of public access and contribution, and if these places are asking for donations, should they be allowed to then lock the site to the public without reason and not be charged with fraud of some kind. This I bring to the discussion table.

Hm, well I've been using Danbooru for a some time because it had great images (although usually you'll get one good image for every 10 hentai fanart you see). What's this about special permission for certain tags? So far I haven't encountered such a problem, but which tags requires permission?

I'm with KholdStare, seen few where you actually needed to register to get access, and even then the registration was free no strings attached. As for fraud, I suggest you never ever use the same password you use for trustworthy important sites or other things on your average forum, imagehost etc etc Even presuming the passwords are hashed for security reasons, they still have a high chance of being broken especially with the now old and obsolete/insecure hash algorithms like md5 etc which sadly are very common place.

(passwords which consist of a word or a common phrase are 100% guaranteed to get broken)

Of course I don't think it's fraud; that's now how those people think
Might just well be that the webmaster of the site is stupid or someone hacked it.

I use Konachan and nekobooru more these days. Danbooru is horribly slow, and I gave up on Aki a while back.

I rarely post but anyways I run moe.imouto.org and I came across this from someone on irc. I try not to ask for donations, keeping 3 servers online is quite costly but its worth it being unique by having no ads or restrictions to any unregistered user.

I also used to be a mirror for danbooru before it first died, I pulled my mirror offline after rq started the access restrictions which probably quickened its first "death" but whatever enough from me, back to lurking.

Don't worry dovac, I use moe just as much as you ^^.

That aside, i've used konachan, and a few others without any problems... so far.

No, Moe is dedicated to mostly high res.

Konachan is wallpapers and some high res

Shuushuu is all around, from high res to danbooru donmai 800x600ish size.

I don't believe Anime-Chronicles exist any more since I couldn't find it anymore, but that place was like moe too.

almost all fan based sites solicit donations, this is nothing to be surprised about. Why should 'I' have to pay for something 'you' download. obviously it is justifiable.

the reason image boards need permission now is because a few sick little kids attempt to degrade a site by posting offensive material.

in danboorus case it was 'extremely offensive and low quality' material. and it was spammed for weeks. apparently little kids who get banned really do have no life and seem to have five hundred different email addresses they use on a daily basis.

there are not many 'free' alternative images boards where you can find safe images these days. I use konachan for wallpapers, they are genearlly kosher.
I really like how u can search by size, type in tags: width:1920 height:1200
and you get all the matching resolutions
i do not like shushu because the search function is garbage. its ok if you visit on a daily basis though.

I run my kemonomimi site entirely free. But then, it's very small scale. Only uses a few gig a month. Though the host allows 20Tb a month, so I have plenty of room for growth before it becomes an issue. I can see sites like Danbooru going through a Tb or more a day, which would piss off most web hosts I imagine. So for higher level service, it is indeed necessary to pay more, so I think it's within their rights to charge. Though Danbooru specifically is horrifically slow and not worth giving money. >.>

README: LOLI - Look here if you are wondering why you can't see loli posts
Since the other thread has too much bickering and not enough explanation, here's the new sticky:

1) Loli images are blocked for users without an invite, i.e. those below privileged, moderator and administrator status.

2) The reasoning is that loli images scare away advertisers.
They just have their own definition of "loli": explicit lolicon. Fair enough. I didn't realize this when I tagged this as loli, but someone else removed the tag, and I could see the image again. Whatever.

I find Danbooru quite helpful, for finding sources of images and the occasional translation. Would be nice to be a Privileged user, but I can't complain. Except when an image gets deleted because it wasn't approved in time.

First of all, I find Danbooru very useful, albeit slow, but still very useful.

Second, some of its advertisers are porn sites, so I have no clue how loli images scare away advertisers...

Quite right about Shuushuu, their search is quite terrible and their tagging system is much like Danboru Donmai which they tagg everrryyyythiiinnggg!!! (which I found very pointless and moe was like different from that, but it seems that the mods have seem to again don't care much about it) umm... pink blue swiggle panty breasts open shirt red eyes, everything and the only thing I can even say this help is when you are looking for specifics and you don't really care. Like this one time I was using Donmai to search for Headphone girls cause usually they have the largest selection even though they're spammed with not so decent quality ones and really small ones that are almost worthless for anything.

Thanks to this thread I now discovered Akibakko and Nekobooru but what language is Aki? I can't read a single thing on it. Danbooru pissed me off also when I searched for loli and got that BS about requiring and invite so I won't be using them anymore what crap that is.

Secondly how do you search for more than one tag on Aki?

Take just a minute and look at my previous post. The "loli" tag on Danbooru refers to explicit lolicon. Sponsors tend to not approve of stuff like that. So you can see all the little girls you want, just not the ones where they're being violently raped. My heart bleeds for you.

Reason #1 for loli being a private tag now is that it's so popular leaving it public causes HUGE amounts of bandwidth to be eaten every month, even more so than usual. If you don't mind browsing blind you can use the xml page instead of the html and it'll show you loli images... but with no preview thumbs you'd have to basically load EVERY image per page to see what it is. Something of a monumental waste of time.
