That sequence was great. It's the kind of action that's probably quite rare, but I can easily imagine real people doing it. It also showed how relaxed Sheryl was in Alto's company. I think that that's largely the reason that she enjoyed their date so much: it let her drop the facade of being Sheryl Nome, and be unrestrained for once. A big bonus to that was that a lot of Macross Frontier was new to her, and she had a lot of fun exploring all the sights. What's even more interesting to me is that it feels like the production staff had a lot of fun making this episode as well, and this kind of feeling is sort of infectious.

There are no such thing as space whales, and there is no Moby Dick story in any of the Macross shows. Moreover, any mention of Dynamite in relation to Macross is purely a figment of your imagination .

I do hope the earlier feelings of similarities will simply lead to a divergence later on. Though I won't mind if the similarities persist.
I rather like Gundam Seed, but the early part of that show is similar to Mobile Suit Gundam in many different ways: plot, setting, themes, story structure, and so on. That was the very purpose of the show, so it's hardly a surprise.

Macross Frontier, on the other hand, only has significant similarities to SDF Macross in one way: it uses a number of objects, scenarios and imagery to recapture the feel of its predecessor. In terms of theme, plot, story structure and character, it's quite different. Even your comparison of Alto and Hikaru isn't particularly strong since their personalities are so very different. Furthermore, Hikaru joined the UN Spacy as much to impress Minmei as it was to protect her.

Though actually, even the Trek warp drives were dependent on how long the energy could hold up in its engines.
I find it a bit hard to say with any certainty since I can't recall any time that any character said anything about a range or FTL speed limitation. Ironically, the more time the fleet spends in real space, the faster their FTL speed has to be.

Off-topic:
By the way, the Star Trek Federation warp drives have a maximum speed of around 10,000c, so it's actually slower than the sustained speed of Macross Frontier.

At this point, it doesn't feel like rivalry at all; it's more like pride at seeing a chicklet hatch. Sheryl likes Ranka, and she's rather happy for her; at least for the time being.

She inspires Alto a little bit with her enthusiasm and Alto as we know is also trying to break free of his fathers expectations of him to carry the family tradition of Kabuki, and he takes something from her enthusiasm in coming up with song lyrics by realizing that he just needs to do what he feels is good for him and not worry about what others think. And Alto in turn inspires Ranka by reminding her of his talk by throwing the paper airplane which gives her the strength to make her debut right in front of a large (literally) crowd and start the circle of support around again back to Sheryl.
Interesting observation. Perhaps you can call it the "Circle of Inspiration" instead .

It doesn't seem all that likely given how driven Sheryl is to sing and to create songs. She's nowhere near ready to even contemplate giving that up yet.

Heh. Knowing the old goat, he'd probably petition to have one put in Macross 7 as well .

I don't think it's entirely certain that the time spent in real space amounts to the actual speed overall, though I do think it must be quite up there as well. Also, that is assuming that it took at least around 20 years or so for the journey.

Also, there's the big hoopla over how fast the Trek warp drives truly are. It goes anywhere from 10,000 c (c = times the speed of light) to something crazy like 600,000 c from the ease of which the fleet travels incredibly long distances in a short time. And it's certain by the time of Next Generation, the top classes of the fleet easily goes 100,000 c.

And as for the space whales, while the entire story was ridiculous (Thanks, Macross 7!) I think the idea of spaceborne organisms are pretty interesting. It'd be funny if Frontier explores them to the point of canonization.

very good episode imo. the weird part to me is how the band suddenly spawn out of thin air to accompany Ranka's vocal performance....but well, if that makes the song sounds better i dont really care LOL

That would be the diameter of the Milky way in a year. Voyager was only 70,000 light years from earth and at maximum Warp wouldn't get back for 75 years. or under an average of 1,000c. Voyager was the fastest ship the Federation had built to date and is after Next Gen.

Next Gen capital ships are orders of magnitude slower than you think.

With episode 4 being the 12th Miss Macross Pageant, a twelve-year voyage is more likely. If they travelled 30,000 light years in that time, the sustained speed would be 2500c (I goofed up the math earlier). However, we haven't seen the Frontier fleet fold in the weeks depicted so far, so they're in FTL for only a fraction of that time: a 9:1 ratio of real-space to FTL may be reasonable. If that were the case, the FTL portion of the voyage is only 1.2 years, and the lower limit for the fold would be 25,000c.

Spoiler for Off-topic Star Trek stuff:

The idea of having creatures like space whales is quite intriguing; however, the way their story was executed was just mind-numbing. Luckily for us, it doesn't exist, so we don't have to worry about it.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Episode 5 aired in the middle of Golden Week, so a fluctuation in ratings is to be expected. Moreover, Macross Frontier is an otaku show that airs at 2:00 in the morning, so ratings aren't all that important to begin with. You can compare and contrast it to Code Geass which is also an otaku show, but tried to enter the mainstream with a 5:00 afternoon timeslot.

What's more significant is that the production staff seem to really enjoy working on Macross Frontier, and they're lavishing all sorts of love on it. I get the feeling that a lot of viewers are responding very positively to that as well: check out how well the Macross Blu-ray preorders are selling on Yahoo Japan:

The first season of Geass had some steep drops as well, ratings from 1/5 to 2/16 (second half of the season) were 1.7, 1.7, 2.9, 2.1, 2.4, 2.3 & 1.7. Keep in mind that ratings don't really matter for late night anime shows since it's more a payed advertisement for dvds and other merchandise. Like 4Tran said it's doing rather well in preorders for dvds and the cd singles are also selling well.

The magnitudes were a bit iffy because of the exponential increases higher up the warp speed charts. But I agree with you in regards to Voyager. Then there's the 'instant warp' engines in experimentals and non-Federation ships and things get even crazier. I won't pretend I'm some huge Trek fanatic (I'm only a casual one).

All that said, it seems apparent that a lot of the planets in UN Spacy's control isn't too far off from Earth anyway. Like mentioned previously, Eden of Macross Plus seems to be pretty close in order for that VF unit to just fling itself there in a hurry.

That'll be, embarressing.

I wonder if zentradi pets are kept on a short leash. That winged cat-like thing looks like it would cause some major human scale damage if it ever went wild

Sheryl is a freaking slut.

Feel bad for Ranka since she's not as flirtatious.

Yeah; MF is only macross I've enjoyed this much. Though I liked the other series; especially the OVAs. (never seen SDF though; and gave up on M7). I dunno; the other macross' just seems so um...serious.

Strange, from Gattai's subs and they'd said that Galaxy didn't have Zentradi. And I'd gathered that the miclones she's seen were from the other ships she visited on her tour, not other ships within Galaxy's escort fleet.

It's the same with Shinsen's subs. It was made pretty clear that there are no Zentradi, micloned or not, on Galaxy. The only Zentradi Sheryl encountered were miclones on the ships she visited on her tour.
