[nVidia] And what is this?

So I just found this while browsing through Newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130351
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130336

First of all, they're both labeled as "EVGA GeForce 8800GT AKIMBO 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16", yet they have different prices. The only difference in specifications I see between them is that the cheaper one was explicitly stated to have no VIVO (video-in, video-out, right?), while the other doesn't say anything about it. Am I to assume that the more expensive one actually has VIVO (which, to my knowledge, makes a card worth a lot more)?

Second: Would this card be worth it? It's probably just a 8800GT spiced up with double the usual amount of graphics RAM, so I'm inclined to say no, but if I'm wrong and this is actually two chipboards (naaahh), then it might be.

Uhh... funny enough:

http://www.evga.com/products/pdf/01G-P3-N809-AR.pdf

vs

http://www.evga.com/products/pdf/01G-P3-N816-AR.pdf

Shows no difference between both cards in the slightest. Quite odd in my opinion, since different Model #s usually mean different specs and features. The N816-AR seems newer, though.

And to be frank, I don't think that, at this price range, the 1024 megs of ram and the AKIMBO EVGA Marketing stunt is worth the 260-280 bucks. Sure, it runs cooler, but can you beat this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130325

For 199 after rebates, when it's more powerful AND runs cooler than the GT? ( Maybe not the Akimbo, but come on, at 60% both my GTSs hardly go over 50C idle and 65-70 under load. The 1-slot GT though sees 90's quite often).

For a little more than what you'd pay for one of those Akimbo GTs, you could get one of these:

These really ARE two cards in one.

So, Claies-san looking for a video card, eh? * Lights up the Batsignal *

Wow...recommending the more expensive one would be pretty cruel, then. >_>;;

The only difference between the two files is that model number...I don't understand.

Shouldn't it be more Fantastic Four or even Captain Planet? o.o

Lets see...
Batman: "Desk-top Desk-top Desk-top Desk-top...DESK-TOOOOP!!!"

Captain Planet: "By YOUR powers combined, I am Captain Boxbuilder!!!"

Yeah, probably Captain Planet.

I just have to wonder, is a 256bit bus enough to make full use of that 1gb? The majority of cards around the 640mb-1gb use anything from 320 to 512bit bus'. Granted those cards operate at higher core clock speeds but I'd have thought they needed bigger bus' to take advantage of the RAM and processing abilities of these cards.

Uhh, quite late here.

@Eviltape:

Haha, true, true. I haven't caught up to the earliest releases, though. I'm highly disappointed in the 280 GTX, though. They said it would perform twice better than the 8800/9800 GTS/X, wasn't really the case. Still slower than a 9800 GX2 and thus slower than my GTSs in SLI. Not worth upgrading at the price tag of 650+ each.

@hobbes_fan:

Personally I think the 1GB-per-card is just a selling gimmick. Most home users wouldn't be making use of all of it, anyway. Unless you're trying to run Crysis on 2560x1600, which... uh, I don't think anyone can attempt without totally melting some serious hardware.

The 01G-P3-N816-AR has 3-Phase power and the the 01G-P3-N809-AR has 2-Phase power.

Anyways the 9800GTX+ (55nm w/higher clocks to compete with the ATI 4850) is comming out next month at $229 and the the 9800GTX will drop to $199 (newegg already did the $199 price drop on this evga 9800GTX here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130350) so it would be best to wait till the 9800GTX+ comes out if you want to buy a 8800GT because it will also being getting a price drop to $169.

It does help with rendering textures but as to whether all of it utilised I don't know. I mean I know for sure that the 512mb 8600gt stuggles to use it properly because of the 128bit bus. Part of the reason I've sold the parts to my gaming PC was I'm sick off the absurd requirements needed to play games. I took a massive hit on the 2900xt and mother board but I at least got enough back to completely redo my HTPC with a x2 4850LE, a 3850, a BD burner.

I'll just use the PS3 and PSP for games now
