Do you want Kendo to be the main focus of the characters (ala Bamboo Blade)? Or, would you be okay with a single character (not necessarily the main, but he or she could be) that knows Kendo, but the anime does not specifically focus on the actual competitions etc. (ala 'Shu' Matsutani (a main charcater who is a kendo student and uses a shinai to fight) in Now and Then, Here and There; or Tatewaki Kuno (a minor characters who uses a shinai to fight) from Ranma 1/2).

Musashi no Ken is a sports anime from a 80's that focuses on kendo and was adapted from a popular manga of the same name.

Seconding Ranma ½ with its recurring kendo matches. Tatewaki Kuno is the captain of the kendo team and pursues Akane relentlessly throughout the series.

The Kendo Girl Scrapbook might also be of interest to you.

I would recommend Yawara! too, especially since the mangaka is so well-known for the amazing storylines in his seinen works (Monster, 20th Century Boys, Pluto). I've only read some of the Yawara! manga but the anime looks pretty good too.
