This is beginning to look like one of the main themes of Frontier, I think.

Alto, destined to be a Kabuki actor by blood, choses to become a pilot instead.

Mikhail had to free himself from his self-doubt, and realize that he is not his sister and is not doomed to repeat the same mistake.

Zentradi, born to fight in endless battles for reasons long forgotten, they are now free to choose their own path in life, even the pastoral life of a farmer.

Humanity is doomed to follow in the Protoculture's footsteps and spread catastrophe across the galaxy (according to Macross Zero), ... well, that one remains to be seen.

It's implied that Sheryl was groomed to be the Galactic Fairy (and a tool of Grace's faction), now she is free to be whatever the hell she wants to be. (pilot?)

Ranka is doomed by having a ominous connection to the Vajra, both plotwise and physically (the glowing thing inside her). It is for this reason I think she will also defy her doom and survive the series alive and well.

That's not his problem. Never was. His problem is that he still doesn't know if his sister just made a simple, tragic miss, or commited murder.

She'd have to get surgery. It's not like she ever denied being born to sing.

Sheryl speaks of destiny and fate, and how one should be able to choose. Alto is struggling with his own heritage, and according to his adopted brother, his destiny in regards to acting.

Given that, I find it difficult not to see Sheryl's blog being written specifically as an address to Alto.

Actually, she's got a really good sense of direction. Frontier just happens to be a bit unique in construction.

That doesn't tell us anything about her preferences, though. We'll have to wait and see.

That's just his brother shooting his mouth off. Alto chose to fly and he's doing it. What else is there? It's true that not living up to his father's expectations is weighing down on him, but so what?

^ Its quite obvious that later in the show, his 'past' will come back to haunt him.

In fact, its already haunting him, since episode 10.

Besides, all Sheryl's prior blogs seem to specifically addressing Alto. If you are reading what I am reading, anyway.

He doesn't look like he's particularly conflicted about acting. He doesn't want to do it. And he's pissed as hell at all the people expecting him to. His brother. His father. That director. That Zentradi and his speech about what's in the blood.

That's why, to me, that blog entry seems rather redundant, if it's addressed to him. He's already spat on the arrows.

Yes, but you've forgotten that Sheryl doesn't know any of those stuff. She wasn't there when Alto talked to his brother. She wasn't there when Alto spat on the Quamzin clone, and she wasn't there when he yelled at Mikhail for not wanting to act anymore.

Except, she knew Alto simply didn't want to talk about it (acting). That is all. In fact, she was teasing him too, in episode 10, to impersonate. Not fully appreciating how much he hated it.

Spoiler for Episode 14:

I would say more about this episode, but it didn't show any progress beyond reinforcing what I've said about the love story last episode, so I'll leave that alone. Sheryl looks like she's heading for a rocky time with her heart and feelings, maybe the sight of Alto's first-love/crush interaction with Ranka next episode will be a big step for her in facing her feelings, as it was a bit depressing to see that, for the first time, she just didn't know what to do.

Edit:

Spoiler for highlight of the episode:

Not to mention her... management situation. Although, it gives Michael an opportunity to come through provided he's not, um... 'indisposed'...

It's definitely going to be an interesting next few episodes; definitely feels like the pace is going to slow down, but with some big things happening regardless. When it rains it pours in Macross, but I'm sure Sheryl will find a way to shine.

This episode was a nice bit of mecha porn with alot of focus on side characters... Kawamori has typically been really good about keeping even bit characters involved and interesting...

Spoiler for Next episode...:

edit: vaguened up a bit

It was when she apologized to Alto for failing to keep her word to him. It's not because of Ranka, she did it for Alto and she wasn't able to keep it.

I think Sheryl is starting to see more and more how much Alto cares for Ranka. What we got from her when she sent Alto off was a surprised expression not a pained one. She was surprised to see Alto's determination to bring back Ranka. Compare this scene to Ranka's sadness in episode 8 when Alto acted so familiar with Sheryl. Ranka's sad face had enough focus (thanks to the underdog scenario) while Sheryl here didn't. Again, we're left to assumption that Alto had offended her with that response of his. Really, how hard is it for Alto to say "Yes, I promise you I'll come back."

I'm not saying that Sheryl will not fall in love with Alto because there won't be a love triangle if she didn't, I'm just saying that I didn't see any sadness coming from Sheryl by seeing Alto act the way he is. She is not being portrayed by the story as an underdog. It's not like we saw what's inside Sheryl's mind in this episode so whether you see jealousy in that painful expression of hers earlier or not is up for debate because that scene can also be interpreted another way. I guess I just see Sheryl in a different light. She's not bitter or anything.

Spoiler for 15:

My take on Sheryl's feelings around this time is that, she's beginning to see Alto and Ranka's affinity for each other and the two aren't even aware of it. The right thing for her to do here is to step back and let the story create a scenario that will bring her closer to Alto more so than Ranka. =) Like I said, Sheryl needs to compete with Ranka for screentime.

ani_d : Geh, Alto/Ranka and Cloti fan, we are destined to be star-crossed lovers. Anyway...

Sheryl's scene being a transition for the love triangle in Episode 13 was backed up by Michael's comment on her handling of Alto x Ranka... not that it matters anymore since Episode 14 has repeatedly driven its point home anyway, so I'm done on the subject. Alto x Ranka is set in correspondence to the finale of the first half of the series, now, the second half is just beginning. (In other words, it's not like you're not allowed to make conclusions at this point, but honestly, how hard can it be for you to actually wait until the second half finishes before making wild speculations, luv? )

Re: underdog perspective, you are right when you said Sheryl won't do the same thing Ranka did. But I think you need to re-visit the meaning of "underdog", as you seem to judge its standards/criteria according to the role Ranka has played. "Just because so-and-so doesn't act like Ranka did, that must mean so-and-so isn't the underdog!" (I'm beginning to hate the "underdog" tag, honestly, as wasn't that just a word popped up from this fandom to describe where Ranka originally used to be : watching from the distance as Alto x Sheryl develops?)

I would say more, but what your post has been constantly telling me is that you're trying very hard to convince yourself Sheryl is no longer part of the race, when really, from the looks of things, she's just only beginning to take over the other half of the love story. I suggest both of us wait for the whole series to end before deciding which pairing is or is not plausible, there's no need to get bothered by what everyone thinks and just enjoy the ride while it lasts LMAO. Let's wait and see how it unfolds.

Oh Ani_d is a Cloud and Tifa fan, will wonders ever cease we actually agree on another pairing...

Anyway the thing is crisis that Sheryl is going to be in the underdog role in the second half though I agree she will be a different type of underdog compared to Ranka. Personally I wish I can find a better word since Ranka has "tainted" it lol...

But I'm amazed Ani_d can't see where this is heading, even some smart cookies who aren't shipping and don't give a fuck about the love triangle know which direction this is going. There's a difference between people who take things at face value and those who look ahead, to use wrestling terms the face value people are marks and the ones looking ahead are smarks. (smart marks)

The Ranka marks are ecstatic atm while the Sheryl ones are depressed, it's romance 101 that the winner gets put through crap around the 50-75% point. It's hilarious of Ranka fans to claim that we already had that happen with episodes 5-11 since Ranka imagining Alto to be in a relationship is hardly something to compare to the trials and tribulations of the winners of ef, true tears and kgne for some recent examples. Even the winner from Kimikiss suffered more... And than you add that Sheryl has suffered more blows in 12-14 than Ranka had in the entire previous 11 episodes.. and us synopsis readers knows this situation extends and doesn't have an end in site yet.

Even if I was a Ranka fan I would still assume Sheryl would win at this point, my amount of liking for a character does not effect what I think their chances of winning period.. For the manga Watashi no Messiah-sama Haruna is the lead female and is just so bland, Lilu otoh is my clear fav but I always knew Haruna was going to win, my favoritism does not blind me. I'm seriously pissed at the manga after the time skip

Spoiler for Messiah-sama timeskip:

and than last week I read the ending on an anime blog and what bullshit. steals her life, steals her love and than arrrgh bullshit.

Anyway enough about that, the quicker I forget the series the better. Like I was saying if I was a Ranka fan I would be worried right now, I would've wanted the Alto and Ranka development to come into play around episode 18/19 after Ranka actually went through some real (not imagined) romantic pain. If the Alto and Ranka developments in 12-14 had happened in 18-20 after some soul searching and pain in 12-17 I would be ecstatic as a Ranka fan and clearly worried as a Sheryl fan.

I'm not saying that Ranka has no chance of winning...since there's still some lee way to make her win from this position (If Sheryl is revealed to be Alto's childhood friend it's 100% over) but personally I think her chances of dying are higher than her chances of winning atm. And I think we can all agree as both Sheryl and Ranka fans that we would hope that Kawamori would have Alto decide while both are alive...

I'm done, typed more than I was going to and all I can think of right now is fuck the Messiah-sama manga.

i dont know about your formula for the development for pairings but if we takes references of older macross then by 1/2 or 3/4 of the serie then the final pairing is already maded and the remaining time is mostly to resolve the conflict between them.

As i see by ep 20 the final pair would be maded and the last 4 ep would be to resolve the sadness/hatred of the 3rd person so that by the end we have a happy ending with everyone still in friendship. Or Kawamori could adapt in newer series like Kimikiss where the final pairing is unclear till the last EP since Macross is already a decade old.

Lastly of course there is also the possibility that either Sheryl or Ranka dies which i hope wont happen...(which Sheryl dead is more likely than Ranka's since never ever did the Lolis dies but only the mature womens...)

I think if the last possibility happened then there will be a riot in the Sheryl/Ranka factions

I expect Sheryl to be back in front around 20-22 with a quick move to Ranka near the end of 24 which would be a "fake" to give some suspension to the triangle for the finale... unless of course Ranka gets a Varja ending.

I could see the romance going either Westlo's or Hai_san's theories. Which one it will be I'm not entirely certain. I won't even get into Westlo statement that "Sheryl has suffered more blows in 12-14 than Ranka had in the entire previous 11 episodes". I could take the time to point out the absurdity of this statement but I think if you take the time to reflect on this statement you'll figure out how wrong you are. But if you'd like me to I'll show you the falsity in this statement. She might later on suffer more but at this point in the show she's hasn't.

No no please explain how Ranka's imagined "blows" hurt more than the stuff Sheryl went through in 12-14. I need a good laugh... Oh no Sheryl is with Alto and the gang instead of showing me around school > Promise me you'll come back Alto!! "Thanks Sheryl, I'll bring Ranka back for sure!!"

And it's obvious Sheryl will go through more shit... guess which "couple" is coming to visit her next episode for one!

How about Sheryl stealing Alto's first kiss or stealing him away for his birthday and from Ranka's concert debut?
