Free money?

Well, I'd say look around for some kind of host outside of the US. You'd have better luck there.

I have had a domain for a few years now running off my own server. I am looking for a decent cheap host that allows some adult content and direct linking (for the LJ icons I have made in my journal ^^') with a reasonable ammount of bandwidth.

Well, I can recommend Suncomet.com, as it is the hosting provider of my site. Snappy and good customer service, reasonable prices, and acceptable 'terms of service' ( = no reference to "automatic removal of offencive content", which is an illegal violation of your rights). Finnish, but I'm sure they can speak english too -and I can arrange it for you if you want.

If you're setting up apache, then do get used to reading through the official documentation. Is this on Windows? Or some type of Unix/Linux?

If it's on windows, download apache_2.0.55-win32-x86-no_ssl.msi from http://www.mirrorgeek.com/apache.org...inaries/win32/. That's probably the best bet.

If it's on Linux, then install the Apache package provided by the Linux distribution you're using.

Better yet, if you want Apache, PHP, and MySQL all on windows, the use WAMP type of all-in-one package. That will save you a lot of hassle.

With the very basic setting, Apache only serves file. That includes HTML, since that doesn't require any processing. SSI has a module that enables the SSI - Server Side Include. CSS is also just a text file, not requiring the web host to do any processing, so Apache can serve that just fine.

For Java, if it's Java Applet, then it's just same as HTML, or CSS or GIF or JPG, etc. It can serve those fine. If you want to do real programming via Java Servelet or JSP, then Apache by itself can't handle that. Same goes with Perl, PHP, Python, etc.

Try www.cybton.com
Its a german webhost but you might get around with using babelfish.
You get 100 MB , PHP 4 / 5, 1 Mysql database for free, if you post in the forums, submit tutorials and the likes you can earn a online-currency to make your webspace ad-free , increase space to 150 MB or get more databases.. although that will be almost impossible if you don't speak german.

It has no restrictions about files, other than those: Pornography is forbidden, and you may not use the space as a virtual HD.
You get unlimited traffic.

So yes, it *has* Ad's - but you can choose the type of ads yourself. If you for instance choose pop ups then you will barely notice them since most browsers have a popup blocker by now.

It isn't that reliable though, the crashes get annoying, but its still an option.
