She doesn't seem to have that 'wanting to be accepted' trait that seem to come with characters with that kind of backstory though...

Such a background does not necessarily lead to "wanting to be accepted". In Shizuri's case, she expects to be the best, and anyone who is beneath her would be worthless in her eyes. Basically, the snobbish attitudes of her parents rubbed off on her, making her have high expectations which includes proving herself to be the top and crushing all "bugs".

Another option is that given how Kamachi likes to parallel his characters' circumstances, what are the odds that Mugino is a 'failed' someone?

Well Kamachi has a number of characters that are a 'failed' or have taken the wrong path- For example Aureolus (If Kamijou failed to save Index) , Accelerator (If Kamijou didn't have good parents) etc.

Maybe Mugino was like one of the other known characters that has similar circumstances, but gone wrong somewhere.
