What Program To Use For Encoding?

I know this isn't a particular "fansub" question but it's still related.

To fansubbers: what program do you use to encoding your videos?
I've been trying desperately to use MediaCoder. but it' so not fun or easy to use I need to get rid of it.

My goal at the moment is to convert mkvs to mp4 WITH subtiles. Media Coder did it once but when I tried to reproduce it, it somehow got confused and wont' let me enter a ID for the subtitle to use (and the subtiles were too big anyway).

So what should I use? (free is preferable)

If you want to change the container only or add extra streams, you can use mp4box.
But if as the title say, for encoding try x264 or Xvid; try megui for the frontend.

I tried Megui and it crashes whenever I open an mkv file.

Is it supposed to work out of the box or is some assembly required?

Yeah, it should work.
Megui automatically open avisynth script creator using directshowsource when you open a video file. You need to install proper codec and splitter for mkv, like haali media splitter. Install cccp.

five days o.O
Well, you still can browse the thread.

5 days is crap. Anyway.

I do have CCCP. I tried the mkv file again and it worked (as in opened).
What settings should I change to get what I want? The program isn't very newb friendly at all...

I just want to press one button that says "convert" and after 20 minutes it's done but it doesn't seem anybody has made it that easy yet.

edit:
I looked more at the interface for MeGUI and I don't see anything about subtitles or audio.

You can convert MKVs to MP4s by just extracting the video, audio, and subtitles out of the container using mkvextractgui. Then I forgot what to use to mux it into an MP4.

I think someone was also ranting that everything should have one "magic button" some time ago. uh, megui also has wiki, go there and figure out how things work.
And maybe you can find your magic button here http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=47693

Audio option is there. I'm very surprised how you can missed it.
You can add subtitles from the muxer option.

If you're still interested in encoding using MeGUI, I wrote a guide a few months ago that I haven't advertised here. (and if you're not, I can completely understand )

http://www.totalgamingnetwork.com/ma...d.php?t=163511

(Yes, encoders, I skipped many corners because of OH GOD BITRATES, OPTIONS, NOW HOW DO I PLAY COUNTERSTRIKE LOL)

This video converting stuff seems to be very asine in complexity...

I'm by no means a dumb person but come on. It's kind of sad it takes pages and pages of instructions on how to convert a video.

</rant>

I want to be able to edit this file in iMovie (the older version before iLife '07). But I can't get quicktime to play ANYTHING MediaCoder is spitting out. Any tips?

Are you talking QT on a Mac? If so Perian should make it play just about anything.

It sure made QT for Mac play my mkv.

I think that'll make things easier. Thanks!

I followed the instructions. I got an excellent mp4 file but with no subtiles. What should I do?

download mkvtoolnix/open mmg.exe (megui has it too in the \tools\mkvmerge\ subfolder).. drag mp4 and your subtitle file to the GUI of mmg.. set default track flags/names, click mux button.

Doesn't that make an .mkv file?
I want to ultimately be able to edit this video also.

I've been messing more with MediaCoder (a godawful interface btw) and I can't seem to get it to convert to DV. Any suggestions on what to use?
Final Cut Pro HD and iMovie '06 don't seem to like the mp4 files I am producing.

MPlayer is the better solution for Mac as far as I know.

But not as userfriendly. Perian uses ffmpeg etc. just like Mplayer does anyway, it probably has better Matroska parsing too. The subtitle rendering might not be as advanced though due to QuickTime limitations.

What makes you think you can't edit MKV files? That said if you just want something that is easily editable you should go with a lossless AVI and not with either MP4 or MKV.

Why do you want to reencode it to DV?
