I'm not too sure, I've only used git a couple of times too. I'd guess the server has restricted access in the root git directory, but master/docwork directories can be accessed. I kicked myself a few times trying to clone without master.

Wouldn't the downloading the snapshot tarball be the same? <_<

Yeah, I saw it on my mail (I'm subscribed to vlc-devel). They're stealing it! OH NOES!

I'll wait until it is more integrated and give it a try.

And the VLC git (after quite a bit of patching) delivers on the new 0.9.0-libass branch

Here are some screenies from some anime... Most definitely one that falls under the terms of fair us...

There are still a few minor kinks that the devs are working out but VLC otherwise conforms to the latest libass codebase and patches. The devs are very thankful for the input from the fansubbing veterans, ex-fansubber testers (<__<), and Aegisub staff that have helped point them in the right direction and point out bugs.

If you want to help test, shoot Jean an e-mail...

Looks much better than asa...

I'll begin to set up Qt4 on my cross-compiling environment so I can build SMPlayer and VLC; I'll publish them on new topics on the Playback Help forum. Well, there are VLC nightlies but...

i'd wait a few days. i don't think the BGR color fix and blend overlapping opacity fix have been committed yet.

also, as far as i know, the nightlies don't have libass yet.

Looks like I wont have to face palm when some one suggests vlc for soft subbed mkvs soon.

pretty much. the screenshots represent the latest code on the libass branch plus a few manual overrides that work around the remaining bugs.

Probably not anytime soon....more like months...and in all likelihood not until this time next year or later even.

Just my guess anyways, since it's part of the 0.9 branch which seems to be largely unfinished (also its been a branch forever). So we can still continue bashing people using VLC with mkv softsubs for awhile longer yet .

VLC 0.9 finale is supposed to be released by the end of the month... There will definitely be advanced SSA/ASS support in it. The devs don't really like the format or find it interesting (too many subformats, not precise enough specs), but they're so many people complaining that they just want to implement it to have a little peace...

It's well known that ASS/SSA is not the most ideal format, but there's not really an alternative for softsubs right now. Anyone is welcome to make a working TTXT renderer though

TTXT sucks though, for example you can't even define borders with it...

Oshiiiii! @_@
I wonder if they can make good on that goal . Alls well that ends well, hosers being able to properly play the files is the only important thing in the end.

I've been forced to abandon VLC because the latest version just runs terribly on my new PC.
For no apparent reason at that. MPlayer doesn't have a problem. I've used VLC for about four years now and was sad to part with it but if it just isn't going to work then I'm not going to deal with it.

There is little reason why the default output or XVideo output would give you trouble on a new computer.

BTW, the libass branch has been merged with the trunk for 0.9.0 and most of the lingering rendering bugs have been squashed. Seeking, subs disappearing during pausing, and random color issues are still being worked on though.

When building for yourself, the only required step aside from gathering all the necessary dependencies is doing 'make -C src .libass' in the extras/contrib directory before configuring the build.
