There are free Linux alternatives for all Windows programs except Flash.

Photoshop CS ($600) --> GIMP 2.0 ($0)
Illustrator ($450) --> Sodipodi ($0), Skencil ($0)

(Did you really pay $1000 for this software?! What a ripoff!)

That's why God created Kazaa. LOL!

As far as I remember the topic is "I need some help with Linux" not "Where to get warez". So please stay on-topic.

I call for this man's censure. And hereby dub thee Troll.

Software piracy is a crime in what is basically all countries. You're actively encouraging copyright infringement in a jurisdiction where the copyright owners have legal representation. The only notion of free software is that of Free Software, falling under the BSD or GNU GPL license.

I take it you've never been audited by the BSA or equivalent. Those get expensive. That $1000 is cheap compared to the $200,000 judgements these companies can get for violation of copyright.

A likely story.

And besides, what you preach to others is your morality as well.

Did you pay Adobe for Photoshop? If you did, then you know it set you back a pretty penny ($900 is the asking price around here). Why are you encouraging others to not pay?

If you didn't, are you going to uninstall it? Or are you just going to take Adobe's programmers' work and not pay? In either case, why are you suggesting downloading the software elsewhere?

Why do you care? Deep down, do you have some sort of sense of morality? How about that!

Troll or not troll, let's come back on-topic please. If you ignore this warning, some users will receive an unpleasant surprise.

AHEM *cough* *cough*

I got a question. Say I put Linux/ Mandrake on my old POS comp. How would I configure the internet? Before when I've installed a new OS I didnt have to do anything but forward my ports is it the same w/ Linux??
What I GOTZ:
2 routers *dont ask Y i just do*
1. Net Gear Wireless router
2. Cox Cable box (Linsky right?!?! Says Motorola on it though -.-'')
-With what I'm listing will this work good w/ linux? 'Cuz XP bogs it down where ME has not-

- AMD Athlon 600 mhz
- 128 MB RAM ( about to get 2 128 MB sticks from a friend though)
- 20 GIG HDD
- OS Windows XP

If you have an Ethernet cable, just plug it in to your computer and it will work automatically with Linux.

If you are using a wireless network, you'll probably need the 2.6 kernel with wireless support compiled in.

Your computer will work fine with Linux; however, a desktop environment like KDE or GNOME may use a lot of resources, and you might like to try out a smaller, faster environment like XFCE, IceWM or FVWM. That will make your 600MHz blazing fast

Ashibaka-Sama, thanks a bunch for your help. I've just downloaded 'College Linux' to try out as a basic Linux OS. Haven't installed it yet but am hoping to tonite and post right after I do. Also, where can I download (if needed) Linux GUI's? Do most Linux OS's come with a set of them? One more thing (sorry ) but where is a good place to download Linux applications, besides Wine, which I"m getting now.

Arigatou,
Karma

[slight pedantry]Well, there are a lot of free software licenses other than those two, they're just probably the most important. Some different definitions of "free software" too.[/slight pedantry]
