Been a while since I last posted

Decided to check out some new anime and decided to download the new Mplayer (rev 12) as well. No dice, doesn't work at all it bounces once or twice in the dock and then quits. Running an older iBook, 1.42 G4 14" on OS 10.4.11.

I have a much older version of Mplayer on my hard drive, could that be interfering? I remember it used to be you had to uninstall all of the old Mplayer components (sometimes requiring an uninstaller script) before a new version would work. Old version of Mplayer works, I'm just assuming it won't be able to handle all the newest fanciest sub techniques.

Glad to see Mplayer is still being updated!

I'm not sure if rev12 is compatible with Tiger, adrian was talking about removing Tiger compatibility for compilation simplicity a few pages ago.

OK so I should download an older revision?

I'll go look through the Mplayer history and see which one would work best

You have another possibility which would allow you to use the latest version of Mplayer:

Why not upgrade your iBook to 10.5 Leopard, it's as high as you'll be able to upgrade it and a 1.42ghz G4 will handle 10.5 without any problems. It will be just as fast as 10.4 and possibly faster.

Several applications and developers are dropping support for 10.4, so it wouldn't be a bad idea.

I run 10.5 on a G4 700Mhz(which isn't officially supported for Leopard) and it works pretty well, slowest officially supported is a G4 866Mhz.

A G4 1.42Ghz will run 10.5 perfectly.

Just thought I'd point that out.

Easy answer to that

You want to buy 10.5 for me? No? Nobody else does either. Seeing as how I currently have $75 in my checking account I won't be buying it for myself anytime soon either.

According to the history for Mplayer 10.4 support hasn't been removed yet

Anyone know for sure if support has been removed? If so what was the last version that worked with 10.4 and where can I get it?

Sorry for the confusion, rev12 requires 10.5 or newer. I've updated the build to fail cleanly on Tiger, updated the Sparkle feed and added a note to the homepage.

Each new release of OSX add at least as much features for developers as they do for end users. Stuff that helps to make better applications more quickly and in turn benefit end users as well. Doing e.g. threading is much easier in Leopard and is incredibly easier in Snow Leopard. Each time a developer has to weight the time needed to backport a feature to an older system version against dropping support for it. In spite of what some people seem to believe, it's not just a matter of compiling it for an older version with a single click. And that doesn't even yet consider the implications for testing and debugging on those versions.

So for the sake of all poor developers and for the sake of even greater applications, upgrade your OSX!

@yjs
The stock rev12 doesn't include ordered chapter support. You'll need to get the special build from pigoz for that.

Tiger have been unsupported for awhile now since the last major update was 10.4.11, which is released in 2007 and Apple usually discontinues support after three years the date the new OS since released. Would be wise to upgrade to Leopard since most of the newer applications require Leopard anyways.

And now I have $35 in my bank account because I had to pay a parking ticket. Joy. Yes yes yes upgrading would be nice, but honestly I'd buy a new battery before I bought a new OS neither of which is going to happen anytime soon unless somebody throws me a large duffel bag full of money. (My iBook's battery bit the dust after four years of dutiful service)

Downloading Rev. 11 now! Thanks anime_layer for helping me out!

Awesome work anime_layer with this player!
I'm using rev12 with pigoz mplayer binaries in my Snow Leopard machine. Work like a charm!

I have a questions...
- is possible add a "Full screen navigation" (a Front Row wannabe) mode like Movist?
- now that is Leopard/SL only, maybe update the play/backward/forward buttons, the currents are aqua/tiger.
