Yes...it's a virus...and the only safe thing is to not click on the link...the virus is on the other people's end...
you got the link cause the virus sends itself to everyone on the person's buddy list...
so if you dont click the link your safe ^_^

edit: I reread your post and i realized that people said it was YOU that im'd them right?
If that's the case then it'll be a good idea to run a virus scan on your pc...but i'm assuming that since it's pretty new that there might not be that much info about it...

If your able to find the virus name check the Norton site...they'll usually give you the info on the virus and tell you how to get rid of it

...wha!?!

*total confusion about what your post says*

um...Norton isn't exactly supposed to run from the CD, you're supposed to install it.

'some damn update it has to do for XP'...huh?

Do you have a copy meant for Windows 98 or something?

But, for a real suggestion, if you can't get it to work try one of the free antivirus programs from download.com

Be prepared to back up your files in case you have to reinstall everything (I recommend getting a second hard drive exclusively to hold your anime/pics/anything like that).

If it does come to that, make sure to scan all your files for viruses before using them again on your comp lest you put that bad boy right back on your HD.

hmm have any of you guys checked out the symantec or any other antivirus software places? they usually have a huge faq about the most recent viruses and all. they tell you what you need to do to get rid of them. not only that, but they tell you what these viruses do and how severe they are to your computer and waht files and all. Well i don't know if it helps, but I thought I would give it a whirl ^^;;

the "buddylinks" thing might not be a virus...but that doesn't mean the link supplied to it isn't....

ask yourself this...how did you get it? why did you get it? and if it's not bad...why does it spread the way it does?

it's spreading from person to person without the person's consent or knowledge...it might not be a trojan or virus...which i highly doubt..but it's definately spreading from person to person...so it can't be as innocent as the "buddylinks" thing

If your antivirus isn't working properly, you can alway try Norton's online scan. Then if it finds anything, download the removal tools.

Hey, if Norton isn't working for you (oh gee, surprise surprise. Cause Norton sucks) you should give Panda a spin. Never had one lick of trouble with panda ever. Best anti-virus out there as far as most of the experts are concerned.

Yeah, how do you automatically IM any person that logs on. I get these IMS from people saying stuff like "i'm 19 just got into college cum see my webcam"
Thats annoying. but i want to say hi to everyone on my buddylist right when they log on.
hehe

I suggest www.trendmicro.com to do the free online scan. It'll just scan and clean/delete for you without the hassle of downloading something else. Also, oddly enough when I used to use norton when I ran it through norton's and when it didn't find anything it found 2-3 things in trendmicro. I'm using their antivirus desktop utilities and it's pretty good. Hope you guys don't get your computer screwed up, always a pain to format because of some virii or trojan.

Ok I did some research and asked around and it IS a virus if you click it.

<<<IMPORTANT>>>
If anyone IMs you with a link to Osama Bin Laden's capture, don't click it. It's a virus. To check if you have the virus, run this in your command prompt:

dir /s %SYSTEMDRIVE%\shellinstaller.ocx

If it says "file not found" then you're safe. If something comes up, you need to reformat.

My friend didn't say on how to get rid of it if you do have it. Luckly when I clicked the link it never went thru and I didn't get the virus. *phew*

See ^_^ I was right....there was no way something "contagious" like that wasn't a virus...well...by tonight or tomorrow i'm sure they'll have a solution to get rid of it
