Ok, as usual some people will say this was an epic ending bla blupp. Why? Cause it was different? If an ending is epic just cause it's different I really wonder what standards you have.

But what's really pissing me off, it's that this is the XX show which (for me) was ruined through a bad ending. I'm watching anime since 8 years now, and if there's one trend I noticed the most, it's the open endings. Everything just resolves around MONEY. It's always MONEY. Like it's here MONEY cause he can do a movie, an OVA whatsoever and the hardcore fans will buy it (ya know the anime DVD prices in Japan). And it's just so fucked up, that I could puke (please excuse my bad words). And I'm rid of it, rid of having my dearest hobby commercialised to the last extent, rid of seeing partly very good shows getting endings like this one and rid of stories being left open where everything was clear to the one episode before the last.

I'm already watching easily only a tenth of what I watched 2 years ago and if this trend goes on I'm considering to throw my hobby complety. Watching a series just to be disappointed again? Without me.

Again... if someone here frequents the japanese boards, Iīd love to hear how the reaction over there was.

I wonder, though... if *we* here in the non-consequential lands outside Japan are up in arms about the non-resolution.... how are the boards in Japan looking at the moment? And will Kawamori get soms pressure from there to finish the romance? I hope something about that turns up in one of the next interviews he does, Iīd really like to know if he gets some backlash in Japan.
Why pull more juice out of it? Isn't that ENOUGH done already? *slams on the table* Everything has been pointing for Sheryl as the most deserving one to end up with Alto for weeks on romance, Grace and Leon are taken out cold, a new world is colonized. What is left after 25-26 episodes?

I hope he gets a backlash in Japan because you can't build something up like this and get away with utter disappointing finish like this. Alto x Sheryl was written all over the place and the only possible logical and satisfying (at the same time for the realistical aspect) ending for the romance department should be Sheryl ending with Alto.

Speaking of Kawamori, has he never learned from the original Macross, Macross Plus and Escaflowne? No need to show a kiss or anything, but enough of a scene to show how romance ends with the series... it's all what I needed and he couldn't deliver. They could have shown one last scene with Sheryl running towards Alto gazing her and on his way to land his plane (slow motion ā la Macross Plus) while Ranka stays a little behind, I didn't ask more than that of a final scene as long as it states how the love triangle is solved.

Chill people, it is just an anime. I think some people here are taking this wee bit too seriously. Entertainment! Not life!

Agreed, just cool down. This is just an anime... Seriously, just because they are the anime crews, they can come out with their own storylines. As anime fans, what we can only do is to watch and have our own expectation on how it will go... but if it doesn't really go our way, that's really nothing much we can do... same like we r reading any kind of novels and stuff..

Anime is not life, if we r not happy with their story, one can always go into the fanfic world and find their own solace.... I am pretty sure.some do write even better than the animators themselves!

The colonizing of the planet, which is sure to have a lot of protoculture secrets, is enough plot to last for at least the movie. And, yeah, I share your WTF? feeling with you in regards to the romance, but for the moment the feeling of relief that Sheryl survived and Ranka didnīt get an out-of-nowhere win is enough for me not to fret too much.

And, see, my reason for asking about a possible backlash in Japan is that a lot of people already are saying "Nothing ever gets resolved in movies!". If enough people are complaining over there, though....

Either fanfics or own doujinshi. Or pay Kawamori enough money to make OVA.

Besides, Macross is not the only anime around.

But Ranka gets to slap Sheryl. I am sure you are pissed with that.

Not really, Sheryl was already resigning to her fate and die quietly hence Ranka's slap later on to shake her up. It is not out of nowhere and they both can communicate due to the crystals they have as earring which allows them to talk to Ranka.

Ranka saved Sheryl's life too.

There is no new information... basically reporting that this was announced, and speculations on what the movie could be a remake or a continuation.

The bottom line is: we don't need more. The colonization is the characters' own story, not Kawamori's. I was asking about whether or not Kawamori ever learned from SDFM, Macross Plus and Escaflowne, all series where everything ended on an epic note, including romance where he had the guts to show a red card to those shipping the wrong pair. In this case, the moment was perfect to show the red card to the Alto x Ranka ship. As Teletha said somewhere else, the show was built on the romance aspect and failing to deliver it means lessening the show.

I don't know how it works in Japan, but having a letdown of a finish in entertainment means negative critics. Negative critics mean less money pouring in from the studio, less money means a smaller check of a budget for future projects as well as a negative view from the studio towards the creator. That's how it works in the film industry, it can't be that different in anime from Japan.

There is another possibility to consider, perhaps the TV series is to be follow up by the movie. Perhaps in the movie the resolution will be shown.

Kawamori already have enough money to make tv series and movie, hence I think he wants to increase fans anticipation so the movie will be successful. It is smart business move, IMHO.

The TV is meant to be build up, the movie could be used as resolution.

I think it works there as anywhere else... if your work sells well, you get more opportunities. So it depends on how the rest of the DVDs/Blue Rays go.

But, and I repeat again, I am very interested to hear of how the episode was received on the Japanese boards, because it is primarily from there that Kawamori will get his feedback on his work. We are, sadly, irrelevant to his perception.

And, btw, my bottom line is: I really need more, because I am not finished yet with those characters. If you have enough of Sheryl and the others, good for you.

I still agree with you, though, on the fact that the non-ending was disappointing. But what is, is. Iīd rather look forward to what will be and if there is any chance it might be influenced towards our favored direction. Hence my fretting over the Japanese reaction. I hope Tak or the other Japanese speaking persons here on the board decide to help me out, there. ^^

No it isn't. Because the triangle in Frontier is totally lopsided in Sheryl's favor (give one none shipping goggled reason why Alto should choose Ranka!) and railroaded by plot circumstances beyond the control of the characters - Ranka forced by her conscience to leave Frontier, Sheryl's terminal illness (something Sheryl also realizes). Ending it here will totally alienate Ranka x Alto shippers and give them justification to whine about the totally rigged triangle for years to come.

For it to end satisfactorily for me, both Ranka and Sheryl have to be on a roughly equal footing, and Alto makes a choice based on his feelings alone (or lack thereof ) with no strings or obligations attached, and the party not chosen accepts it and moves on with their life, which has not quite ready to happen yet.

For the record, I think Alto will still choose Sheryl - once his fascination with his new blue sky (which will always be there) is over and he realizes the freedom it represents is overrated if you don't use the privilege to choose freely to decide what you want for yourself.
