Unless the computer cheats, it won't be that difficult at all. Game programmers are game programmers and not mahjong masters after all.

There's a game in the arcades I believe, but it might actually just be an official clone of another Mahjong game.

Some of the games do. I remember this one game I played on M.A.M.E where the computer literally got Mahjong within the first three turns on every game I attempted about 9 out of 10 times.

Edit: Ah yes here we go, the Saki Mahjong arcade game in full review by Gigazine.

Tell that to chess programmers. Nothing's impossible with some effort.

They are not going to put deep blue on your ds game. If they do, it is gonna cost you tens of thousands a copy.

It is much easier to make a cheating computer than a thinking one.

Ugh. Exactly. I think it depends on the game, but they shouldn't have too hard a time making a computer memorize all the mahjong winning tiles (humans really have a tough time with that one, deciding and all) to reading what enemies are discarding (another weakpoint for humans vs computers).

But really.... Saki Mahjong... on the DS/PSP. Make it happen!

Probably true, though even discerning patterns and reacting just makes computers pretty scary in Chess too, so I don't see why they can't do more of the same thing in Mahjong. I guess the tricky part is the 4 player aspect really. I honestly have no problems with the vast majority of Mahjong games in giving me the sense that I'm at least playing a game. You can sort of tell with the discarded tiles and Riichi's and the like. It's not like in stupid racing games where the CPU gets all perfect-driving and boosted up. Totally cheating..

And like with most anime-to-handheld games nowadays, hopefully we can get a voiced-over game with all the seiyuus pitching in.

Bad thing is, if the opponent had the same ability as potrayed in the anime ^^;
Who wants to fight Koromo in her full potential ? ;_;

That all depends on the systematic complexity of the game. It isn't hard at all to make a CPU that can play mahjong. It's pretty much the same as making one that can play poker or rummy with a larger hand. Also, since it is a game of luck, you don't really have to give the CPU that much "skill" and it will be decently difficult. It just has to know basic tactics.

Of course it is easy to make a program that just know the basics. There are countless games out there. It is also easy to beat those just as i had said.
You wouldn't get a nodocchi class opponent from those.

Meh computers I played against did a good job reaming me, but then I'm a 100% novice...Hopefully at some point when I get the time I'll be able to learn even a portion of all the god forsaken rules of this game. Really understand how yuuki can break down after the first few rounds of this game...

I think it'd be a pretty fun venture for the programmers to try to put probability-tweaking of computers without making it an outright cheat + put in those weird Koromo/Saki conditions in there.

I think the results could be pretty scary considering that the probability itself is tweaked, hence tweaking the luck aspect. In a way, those kinds of abilities are sorta like cheating to begin with.

As for that arcade game.... If I was filthy rich, that unit will take residence in my room.

Koromo power sure sounds scary. To be able to induce a haitei by its very nature means that she is able to manipulate tiles such no one is able to ron until the last tile. That is surely a broken ability.

Ryuumonbuchi is just made of interesting people.

Spoiler for small details:

Nothing much needs to be said about Koromo.

So they're easily my favorite set of characters in the series.
