h264 in avi?

Hello all,

I want to ask if it's possible to put h264 in avi container and how to encode it like DB(dattebayo) ? If there is a way...

it's possible, but for a number of reasons you don't want to do it. If you use h264, put it in either mkv or mp4.

So he comes here after getting Rule 6'd at doom9... (despite the fact that I already told him how...)

Why H.264 in AVI is bad is summed up here.

Oh, and Dattebayo are trolls. Ignore them.

Use VirtualDub. Set your video codec to h.264 and have fun. >.>

Perhaps you should answer this question. There's a good reason why people are asking it.

That's beacuse THAT IS the answer to your question. It's like asking "How should I slice up my hand better?". The answer will be "Don't do that". Don't put H264 in avi, it's retarded.

No, you came here because everyone is being helpful and you're ignoring them. If you want to play with x264 and your fansub group is AVI-only :

1 - Play with x264 on your own with MeGUI (or any x264 GUI) and don't release the MKV or MP4 files, keep them for yourself.
2 - Join another fansub group that is MKV ou MP4 friendly.
3 - Create your own group (at your own risk).

the most amusing thing about this guy is not really that he wants to put h264 in avi but rather that he seems completely incapable of clicking links and reading guides; several people have already told him how to do it

I've committed this heresy of using h264 to create an avi but I've never had the file grow that large unless I did a lossless pass.

But recently I've gotten some help from someone who is writing good visual "realtime swf" tutorials for me. No technobable, just the button pushing and typing. So I'll be doing real encoding soon and utilizing h264 properly.

DB only uses x264 VfW (H.264 in AVI) in order troll the entire fansub community and its leechers.

They are by no means a group to look up to in terms of sane encoding.

h.264 in avi is simple. Change the extension.

OK, no, don't do that. >.> Open up Megui, put the video/audio you want in, set the profile to be x264, hit AutoEncode, select "AVI" as the container, and select the filesize you want.

AVIMux should be able to do it too.

Basically if you type "X264 VfW" into google, you'll get all the hits you probably need to find out how to do as well as the downloads you'd need to do it (including probably all the links in this thread).

I think your main problem will be that because it's not natively supported in AVI format, your options of a VfW codec will be far more limited, it will be far more outdated, and technical support will be far more limited than if you used a non VfW version.

I'm going to say it's probably a bad idea, but if it's for personal use, it's not a big deal, if it's for fansubbing, well, hey, I'm not the one who's going to have to deal with the flood of technical support that's in sudden demand when people can't figure out why the releases won't play.
