How does one do a proper type setting...

It is much more labour intensive than it l thought it would be or am I using the wrong tools?

I use virtualdub to try to do a proper type set. The problem is when you move frame by frame you can't hear the voice(at least I can't) and not all voice(over) you would see lips moving. So, I would like some hints/pointer to make type setting little easier.

what are you trying to do? is it to color subs depending on character or on/off screen? if it is, I would use a different style for each, watch the whole episode, and note every time where it should be off/on . I don't fancy preview because they sometimes are slower than real , so you get confused on you timing!
If you are trying to position subs in the video ( such as to tranlaste a sign ) you could use the grid filter, it's pretty ugly, but it can turn out very useful!

Thanks for your response. Actually, I am trying insert a sub in an anime and trying to do a proper timing(i.e. lips matching the sub). I could watch it on a video player and note down the time, but problem is most video player shows time in seconds and too fast. Some instances I'll need less than a second.

I thinking if there is tools out there that let me move the video clip by couple frames at a time and hear the voice at the same time.

EACH WORD TO THE LIP MOVEMENT?

That's awfuly precise and a fool's quest if you ask me. If you said audio start to sub start, accuracy 1/100s, then I'd suggest Audacity + Virtualdub.

There is no need to time the subs to the lip flap, doing so is like lavalyn said, a waste of time.

Since you are translating the audio and not the lip flap. DO IT TO THE AUDIO!

and if you time your subs on the lip flap, how are you gonna make sensitive sentences? if you translate word by word it won't mean anything. and if you don't translate word by word, then there's no point in lip flap timing.
