LOL....ok. So...with the marketing thing, they should market Maromi from Paranoia Agent, 'cause who wouldn't want a figment of someone else's imagination on their monitor? Haters need some edumacation on the subtleness of anime and how you unexpectantly pick up on some hidden meaning. Whether that meaning is zen-like or graunchy is another story. And believen it or not but I think that GitS, Akira, FMP, and Robotech/Macross could happen. It may be waaaaay in the future long after we've been buried, mummified, or lauched in space (me!!), but it has a chance of happening. If there's one thing that I believe in is that nothing is guaranteed except the unexpected. ehh??

I've been kind of wondering about that - are the only things men are allowed to be into

cars
sports
girls

and anything else, like anime, comics, sci-fi, film, etc. are considered geeky and loser- ish? What's up with that?

Yeah, we can rant and vent our frustrations all we want, but them "outsiders" are probably doing the same thing in some online community. But anyway being a "geek" is gradually becoming a requirement in this day and age.

Some things which were known before as "geeky" are now trends. Before no mainstream movie buff would ever be automatically equated with Tolkien, but the LOTR movies changed all that. Then all of a sudden you see people carrying the books around. . .yeah whatever.

But I guess anime is different from comic books and sci-fi. It's still essentially a cartoon, and because it looks like one some people will just be turned off.

I'd like to clarify one thing again... I never said it was bad to dislike anime or to have other interests. I don't think a person is close-minded because they dislike anime. I mean, I didn't start this thread to make myself look like a defenser of anime who freaks out when anyone says something bad about anime. ^^;;; And I don't want this thread to become an argument between people who don't like anime and people who like anime.... I mean, I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do, I just don't want people to see me as some horrible person who starts flame wars. x.x

Well, some people are just closed-minded and there's nothing we can do about them. As for me, I like good anime, cuz there are also some really bad anime out there. Comics too. It sometimes annoys me how some people say that manga is just so much better than american comics, which really doesn't make any sense. There are some good manga and there are some bad ones. Same thing goes for american comics. Personally, I love the art style of American comics, and it really pissed me off that Marvel decided on 'manganizing' some of their stuff, cuz it really isn't all about the artwork. American comic artwork is great, but what it lacks at times is a great story. Anyways, for those people who say that anime is for kids, i just say that the great thing about it is that there are so many genres to suit any person's taste. And as for all the other stupid biased arguments about anime, I just point out that these same arguments could apply to every other form of popular entertainment.

A lot of people said that people don't like anime because it's mostly supernatural.

But there are lots of "supernatural" shows or shows with odd parts in it that are funny too. Ally McBeal had that dancing baby thing and all the funny little special effects, and Charmed is much the same... and well, maybe they DO have a point.

Live-action is more suited to real-life events as it is easier to show the expressions and tones which is the meat of the show, not the plot. Anime is better at showing great backgrounds and fantastic images and complicated plots and fast action (most fast action in live-action seems to be limited to movies because it's that expensive to get flying Neos, etc.)

I don't mind people who don't like anime for good reasons and have other interests. I don't really blame those who generally avoid anime after watching stuff like Saiyuki (which AXN repeats to the point of death) and saying it isn't to their taste. They don't really have the time to lose their life like me and check out all the anime there is...

But it's simply when
1. They ONLY watch some anime and conclude it's not to their taste AND THEN they start judging YOU and make a hasty generalization by STATING the "FACT" that all anime is bad. When they get carried away by their personal assumption they should just keep it to themselves.
(it's ok if they've watched a substantial amount and can give good reasons as to why it's generally bad... like how many people have watched lots of popular TV programmes and conclude that it's rubbish)

2. They don't like anime for stupid reasons. Yeah, stupid reasons DO exist. When people don't consider the whole CONTEXT of the anime and thus understand why some things are the way they are and don't bother to find out the truth...

However, this isn't simply restricted to anime. It is found in various other kinds of criticisms for other media... Like movies. I actually think a fair number of repliers to this topic do one of the 2 things I listed above when it comes to some other media. So what if some other people do it to anime... maybe we should practice what we preach sometimes. (I'm not saying that what we "preach" is wrong simply because we don't practice it, but you can't expect anyone to agree if you don't do it yourself...)

How Do I Deal With...

...jerks who bash anime? I mean it's okay for them to dislike it, but they bash it every chance they get. They're the "everyone who likes anime jack off to all of it and have no women of their own" kind. Lots of us do have girlfriends/wives, including me, so I know they're just being rude little pricks... but how do I approach them?

And this is even comming from Transformers fans! Guys that collect little plastic toys that change shape... where's the logic to that?!? Okay, I can go tell a mod, but seeing as those guys are so immature, they'd bash me for that even. Plus the mods there aren't the most caring of ppl...

Have any of you guys delt with this? Please, any tips would help.

I take it this is on another forum? I'd say the best bet would be t either ignore them, or say something like, "You're entitled to your opinion, but perhaps you should watch some anime first? It's not all porn or pokemon you know, there's something for just about everyone. I could recommend a few series you might enjoy."

Regardless, they're just trolls, so it's best not to feed them. They thrive on flames from the people they enrage. If you respond at all, do so as maturely as possible.

Yes, it's on the forum in the link.

I've considered telling them that they might enjoy anime, but it seems that they're just too superficial and immature to ever consider it.

Well I've learned from experience it's best not to even bother to try and change their minds. Once those kinds of people have their minds set about how something is, no amount of logic will change that. I lurk on another forum myself where anime bashing is common. I don't even bother trying to explain how wrong they are.

Best advice I can give you: just ignore what they say because you know they're wrong. If you can't do that then...well...I don't know, watch anime to make you feel better lol...

Didn't notice the link.
Well then, it's their choice. If they don't want to give it a chance, there's nothing you can do. It's their loss.

Yes, they have to be willing to give anime a chance. But you never know, they might just be bashing it because it's the cool thing to do on the forum, while actually being open to something new.

I might find a different forum.

If that's not really something you want to pursue, just sort of ignore all the anime-bashing going on. Post just about Transformers and stay away from the threads you don't want to be involved in.

Don't be the brand-new poster defending anime, eventually you can be the well-respected poster, who has noticed that he has taken a liking to this Japanese cartoon thing.

That is soo true. No matter if is is true what your explaining too if they think red is actually green they won't want to listen. Sadly their are so many ignorant people who aren't open to new ideas and real facts.

If they can actually argue about it then it's worth it to hear them I mean it is their opinion. But if they don't have a valid point I just look down on them for their lack of knowledge.

Firstly before I say anything else, I've merely spanned through this topic to get the general gist so excuse if any prominent points where made already, as I'm sure they have been.

To the original poster, I'm well aware of what you are saying. Anime is a very distinctive medium that is rather unique and simply needs to be accepted for what it is. Many people draw the wrong impressions because of this reason. I think it is perfectly understandable for them to do that, but it is to be known that 'Anime' is merely a genre of animation specifically coming from the far east, primarily Japan. That's all it is at the end of the day, an animation genre. There's many separate individual studios that create separate 'animations', all with different story lines, different themes and ultimately completely different animation styles.

There's also a vacant facade that 'Anime' is usually watched by 'geeks' or 'sad people', which usually roots the feeble arguments you tend to hear from people. These baseless arguments essentially root from their insecurities as a way to veer from the real trivial reason they will not watch it.

It really does depend on the type of show you decide to watch as well. There's hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of completely different shows, most of which have incredibly complex story lines and intricate character relations that I haven't honestly seen anything remotely comparable in an animation sense elsewhere. If these supposed arguments are based on any comparison, be my guest. I can only begin to compare the stories to those of novels, and that's a very respectable comparison. Now, like always, in an animation genre, there's bound to be a few shows that have similarities, but ultimately Anime is just a genre, and this is where 'generalizing' comes in.

Ignorant people that have decided not to watch Anime tend to generalize a lot. I emphasize on 'ignorant' because anyone who wasn't would have at least watched a few titles to base their arguments on, other than a few pictures, etc. They generalize and classify the 'Anime' genre for what little they actually saw. This as a result brings up the amusing comments like 'Everything is the same!', or 'I don't like the big eyes', etc.

Bottom line is, not everyone is going to enjoy Anime, obviously, we can't expect that. My friends don't watch Anime so it has become more of a past-time for myself. That's fair enough, they don't particularly have anything against it but sometimes people just simply prefer not to watch it, much alike any other 'type' of interest. Bottom line is, like it or hate it, there's nothing wrong with it.
