I would assume that "Korean dogs" means exactly what I think it means though.

Dammit Japan.

No... see you're using cultural baggage -- some of these choices are connected to foods connected to the country: pork, sheep, ... dogs. Obviously it would be interesting to see an interview where the author explains the way he chose.

Actually, I might have chosen dogs for the US --- we're a multiple breed, widely diverse society with a wide range of behaviors (noble to pathetic). Dogs are perfect for that.

Why do I hear "dog" used as an insult so much in anime, then? Or is that just Rie Kugimiya?

The Japanese and Koreans do not get along well so I could see why there'd be that "subtle" insult, but I'm young and don't know much.

Don't forget, Japanese were depicted as gorillas too besides the chimpanzee.

"dog" as she uses it .... not quite an insult as much as an assertion of a "master-servant" relationship (which can be demeaning). I'm not going to rule out the possibility of the choice being a bit of a poke at the Koreans. But I also know a friend of mine who had been staying in Japan and visited her relatives in Korea --- who promptly threw out all her Japanese cosmetic and bath products to replace it with Korean products because "Korean better, Japanese stuff sucks".

Its like the Brits and the French.... never ending.

Wait... I thought dolphins were the smartest animals after humans.

(thinks about the ordering in HHGTTG 1) mice 2) dolphins 3) humans) )

It's considerably more difficult to test the intelligence of water mammals than it is to test the intelligence of apes, but...

I think the connotation is that apes are smart and the most human-like of all animals, which is what I was trying to get at, sorta.

true.... ah well consider the rabbits...

one of the things anthro works usually ignore completely is varying levels of intelligence. Animal races may have personality quirks (timid, aggressive, etc) but are generally written as equally sentient.

I'll simply have to learn more about the author and the manga before I babble much more.

The depiction of Japanese troops in manga is not very flattering though.

I...don't think any of this is why people don't pick the Eagle for Americans. I believe it's because birds simply don't translate well in anthropomorphic depictions, since wings don't go over well to hands, and beaks don't allow as many facial expressions as animators would like. They bent it quite a bit to get Donald and Daffy to work (like giving them teeth).

yea I'm with ya on that, its weird seeing a bird using its wings to handle a item that needs opposable thumbs

Altho birds are cool n all, I just don't think it would work all that well unless all the aniamls choosen were birds.

Vexx, did you watch Disney's Fireball yet?

Gedächtnis: Ah, yes, dolphins. According to the database, it says that they were the second smartest creatures on Earth until 48,000 years ago.
Drossel: What about humans?
Gedächtnis: It seems they were third, ma'am.

Aye, the whole season... was kind of impressed by the HHGTTG reference and the whole background "war" thing...

Been passing the thing around, even non-anime folk enjoyed it.

Win for Fireball reference.

Also, trailer looked awesome. Which is why I forced Futa to translate it. <3
