I'm really pleased with the new keionbu lineup actually, I was pleasantly surprised that they managed to get two new members in the space of 8 pages, one of which appeared less than five times I think.
I like both members, it's about time they had someone with glasses in a band! I was musing about what instruments they will play but whatever they do I'm sure it will be entertaining as most likely they are learning from scratch.

They're short on drummer, so one of them is probably a drummer (Or, I'd like to see a synth drummer if possible ).

I'd say lulz, mostly. They decided to use Street instead of Brooklyn, Southern, or Texan for the local accent.

I dunno... her speaking "un-Mugi like" is kind of the point, don't you think? I might agree they're taking it a bit too far, but it's not something I'd consider boycotting the manga for.

True, but based off my experience since I live an hour away from Chicago city, I Gauss its more acceptable to hear that if your talking about slang in the city known as street slang or street talk.

Well it is suppose to be Kansai dialect. Some translators use Brooklyn (Azumanga Daioh manga), others use American Southern (Azumanga Daioh anime). This one decided to use slang. Why Kyoto is "in the hood" now, I don't understand.

It would make more sense for them to use old court English given that Kyoto is the old capital of Japan, with a lot of old nobility going around.

It would except that using that would shift it "out of the country", since is one imagines Japan as the United States, Using King's English would be like using...oh, some Chinese I guess. In terms of relative distance rather than language itself. Most translators would try to keep it in the country, even if the language can cross oceans (such as if they tried to pull off someone from say Okanawa as speaking Australian).

Since the closest to King's English in the United States (in terms of pompus sounding if put on thick, think "Gone with the Wind") is either Southern, or New England...most choose Southern, since New England is hard to show in text.

Brooklyn is used because it is easy to see in text form and there are a lot...a whole lot of people that will understand it as an accent in text form. Basically to get the point across that the speech is different, but not a completely different language...without making it look like Shakespeare...because that is what most people thing of when they see King's English.

Pretty much agree with you guys here. Received Pronunciation would have been suitable for Kyoto speech while Cockney would have been a good representative for Osaka. Gansta speech just makes Tsumugi-ojousama so out of character!

But I could understand the translator's challenge here: How would you present those pronunciations in writing?

Well, we'll see if Mugi could take care about the fees. It would be surely no problem for her (Back in the 4th volume, she even went to the extent of "doing something" in case if Mio didn't pass the university test) lol XD

I dunno... its like translators hit themselves with a "stupid stick" when it comes to decisions on Kansai-ben. It is complicated but I'm pretty sure " potty mouth ghetto slang" does not reflect the "spirit of Kansai".
