Arashi no Yoru ni (One Stormy Night)

Wow. I'm surprised there's no topic on this movie. It's called One Stormy Night (or Arashi no Yoru ni in Japanese) and it's about a goat and a wolf meeting on a...well, stormy night and they talk and they become friends. It was made about 4 years ago. here's the ANN article.

REVIEW !

Arashi no Yoru ni is basically a children’s movie. It only has animals as characters and is drawn in such a unique way that hardly reminds you that is actually an anime.

ANIMATION & SOUND SECTION: 7 [There are many anime series with animals, none of which is like this movie.]
Using soft pastels and watercolors, the result is that of a European fairy tale. Nothing is reminiscent of Japan and if it weren’t for the Japanese voices, most of us would easily consider it a European production. Although childish and minimal in its drawing concept, the light colors, the cute little animals and the beautiful pasture sceneries truly give of a warm-hearted feeling that keeps you interested. The music themes are few and low-toned but match with the atmosphere of the graphics. In all, graphics and music are nothing wonderful but do their job nicely.

STORY SECTION: 6 [Anidb gave the movie a yaoi (gay) characterization, something that is misleading.]
I was expecting to see weird sickening scenes with wolves doing goats but to my surprise, nothing weird or abnormal really happens in the movie. The story is simply about the friendship between a wolf and a goat, after they befriend on a scary stormy night. The wolf pack wants their member to stop this nonsense, since it is stupid to play with your food. The goat herd pretty much wants the same from its member. There is a small conflict, a rather simple questioning of good will and that is that. Nothing grand-scaled or unexpected really happens. It is a simple children’s story, which won’t force you to think a lot.

CHARACTER SECTION: 7 [Woof! Beee!]
There are two main characters, a wolf and a goat. The rest of the crew are simply other wolves and goats who continually complain and advice the two to stop doing this abnormal behavior (the closest thing to a gay relationship you get to see in the movie). None has a real personality, all wolves are presented as violent and selfish who follow the will of the leader out of fear and all goats are presented as simple-minded, passive and always worried who respect the elder of the herd. The characters would be quite boring if it wasn’t for the humor, which is based on breaking the normal animal behavior. There are dozens of light comedy scenes where the wolf tries not to eat his friend and where the no-brain goat thinks of the simplest, good-willing explanation there is. They are nothing special but their interaction in a similar way with the other animals makes them sympathetic.

VALUE SECTION: 7 [It is a one of a kind movie.]
It would be nothing to care about if it was a European cartoon but being an anime, it deserves more credit for its deviation from the norm.

ENJOYMENT SECTION: 7
It won’t blow your mind but it will be a good watch if you can still stand kiddy movies. It is a nice change from the sexual, depriving, violent anime we watch all the time.

Average: 7/10
