BTW, Proto, I left you some positive reputation for your post. Very insightful.

Also, a thanks for the positive reps. While I like to believe I know a lot about mahjong, I still suck at the game, LOL. Ironically I still don't know how to count fu and hans :X ... one of these days I'll be able to do it myself.

From a punny richi hand....

To a sanbaiman!!

... and one han short from a yakuman. Sucks to be the almost there guy. I guess my opponents learned the had way why calling kan's for the heck of it is generally a bad idea.

It's precisely why I don't kan, especially when riichi is called by someone else.

Did they call kan before or after riichi? If it's after:

Calling a kan when someone else has riichi is just giving the other person free doras.

It was before, but still, calling open kan's when your opponents can still declare riichi is normally a no-go. Unless you are way behind in points, you alredy have an open hand or you are Saki.

I think that's exactly what they had in mind.

Hello guys, I'm new at mahjong. I've watching both Akagi and Saki the player with my friends and we now think mahjong is friggin awesome! So after playing it online (tenhou), we decided on buying a mahjong set from Japan (it was $55 for the set, but %58 for shipping, lol)

I have a few questions about mahjong:

1. If you kan, do you reveal the dora indicator before you draw and discard or after?

2. I heard somewhere that once everyone riichis and it is a draw, you don't have to reveal your hand. Is that true?

3. If the game is a draw after all tiles have been discarded, if nobody is in tempai, does dealership change? I haven't been able to find a definite rule on this.

Other than that, I'm still learning how to find safe tiles when discarding. But I think I am slowly getting better. I've never got a yakuman before. Yet the closest was 1 tile away from tempai for 13 orphans. (In my opinion, all greens seems like the hardest to obtain)

1. It is after
2. I'm not to sure about this one, I will have to check. (If not, anyone could declare a defensive false riichi once other 3 people declare their riichi and get away with it without paying a chonbo, so I'd suppose you have to reveal your hand but I'm not too sure).
3. yes, dealership rotates, however the bonus hand indicator is passed over the next hand. That means that if you were playing the second bonus hand, the hand ends and no one is in tenpai, during the next hand the dealership changes but it is counted as the third bonus hand

The player to my left was "Koromo @ Ryuumonbuchi" and the player in front of me was "Miyanaga Saki"

If you want to watch the replay:

A surreal example of life imitating art (okay maybe not really)

No Rishan Kaihous, however

And pb003 announces his retirement from Tenhou after exactly 1,000 games.

It's amazing how I always deal into others' winnings hands. I had enough. I'm starting anew.

Examples:

http://tenhou.net/0/?log=2009092603g...85cd552a6&tw=1

(East 1st Round, Either way I riichi, I'm screwed)

http://tenhou.net/0/?log=2009092614g...84f9aa059&tw=3

(South 4th Round, Oh boy)

http://tenhou.net/0/?log=2009092523g...177afb2c0&tw=1

(Fine example of how I can still lose without playing into others' hand)

Yare Yare...

It would be funny if I ever happened to play against you by chance.

Peanutbutter, I'm jealous of your ranking. I've been stuck in advanced level 2 for over a year now...

http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html is a flash game of japanese mahjong to play against computers (they play kinda unrealistic compared to real people)

Tenhou has modes to play against the computer too - if you use that to play mahjong online.

I'm stuck with games like this, where I'm shut down the entire time:

Is that game even winable for me!?!?!?

There are games like that. I know.

I'm playing very defensive right now in my new account. Halfway and if my tiles still suck, it's time to abandon ship. I've also abandoned ship once someone riichi-ed, unless I'm going for 12,000 for more.

And these are my results so far:

Guess there's still some luck in me. Things will be rough once I fight my way to 1st-Dan.

Pretty much all of my games have been pretty much unwinnable lately; no matter how cheap a hand I go for I can't seem to build it up before another player does.

And to make it even worse they seem to be able to build hands worth 12000 in a few turns, and they always seem to tsumo when I'm the dealer
