Y'can play Tenhou straight off the site, without installing anything (if you choose to). Here's a guide:

http://www.osamuko.com/complete-begi...ing-on-tenhou/

Not mentioned for the game selection:

left column of buttons = East only
right column of buttons = East-South games

As for reading kanji... well... I only know a good 15-20 kanji; and none of those are on tenhou.

There is the ability to create custom rooms/games. However, I forgot how to do that...

It was unlikely for me to deal the 4 man or the 7 man but it still presents an interesting situation here...

If the 7 man and the 1 sou tile ended up in the deal wall instead, I could have completed my tenpai near the end and win within a turn. But nooooo...the guy to the right drew his tile.

I mainly play against computers, mainly because I'm still learning and I play at work so sometimes I have to alt-tab :3

Heres a screenshot of an amazing hand I just won with. At first I thought it was:
- 3x Yaku Pai (Dragon and Seat/Round Wind)
- Toitoi
- Riichi
- Menzen Tsumo

So I was like, "sweet I finally got a Mangan+ hand!" Then I click the screen to go to the score, and it says Yakuman! I totally forgot Su An Kou was a Yakuman.. xD That was a pleasant surprise, my first Yakuman ^.^

Spoiler for Screenshot:

So I continue that same game, and lo and behold. 2 rounds later, I get a hand that looks like it might become a Shousangen. So I ride my luck out, and BAM! My first Shousangen (my favorite Yaku/hand)
Granted its vs computers so its not as good as if it had happened vs real people, but I usually lose horribly to those computers :P

Spoiler for Screenshot:

Nice Yakuman Seref! I'm kinda jealous, since Suu Anko would have been my first yakuman, but I ronned on a double pair wait - Aparently, since I ronned it, it counted that meld as open even though my hand was closed ;_;

My first Yakuman was all green: http://tenhou.net/0/?log=2009102620g...-fea7d139&tw=2

Also: If you want to get into japanese mahjong in real life, you probably shouldn't use the flower tiles. The red dora 5's and the dora/ura-dora should fit perfectly for extra points.

Here is some English translations for Tenhou: http://arcturus.su/tenhou/ (it might be a little bit out of date, but I think they update it every so often)

To play privately in your own room, you just add a "?L" and number at the end of the url. The English speaking room is 7447 (people from irc and other locations gather there to play sometimes)

English Room: http://tenhou.net/0/?L7447

Default Japanese Lobby: http://tenhou.net/0/ (or http://tenhou.net/0/?L0000)

I think the numbers range from 0000 (default) to 9999.

Haha, should have seen my last game. That was awesome!

I feel sorry for the other 3 dan though. He played perfectly in my opinion.

1800 rating on the east 3p beta rooms. no premium account.
these rooms are a lot harder to gain rating points. I simply got lucky. Compared to the other rooms, I couldn't even get over 1700 because we all know premium players have a better chance of winning than the freeloaders.

Hmm, one aspect of the game no one has talked about... at least, not in recent memory around here:

Tile tricks

Wow, that stuff's real. Then again, I didn't really doubt it all that much. Just amazing to see a human do it.

Haven't been playing this for awhile. Recently picked it up again.

Now Tenhou doesn't store your ID anymore? That sucks.

My ID is still stored, if what you mean is the PIN appearing in front plate when you boot up the page.

I still play BillyJong, but haven't had much money to pay for matches recently.

Yeah, I'm referring to the login-code/ID.

Mine automatically resets to the default grey style with the "NoName" after a day or so.

Mine saves, however, they do delete accounts if you haven't played in a couple of months.

Well, I managed to get a couple games played on real tiles for some real life mahjong. It's quite amazing how different it is from online.

Naturally, initial struggles (despite playing on computer based games) mainly involved tile handling. But these things can be quickly handled.

As long as y'know what yer doing (as far as developing hands), you're on good shape on playing the real thing. :3
