Sounds like your CPU's are too weak to handle "post" processing.

Also, softsubs will eat more CPU than hardsubs for obvious reasons.

And 848x480 is mod16 which is good. 853x480 is not mod16 so the actual encode should not be in that resolution.

853x480 is the display aspect ratio, not the pixel aspect ratio. I don't think the dar has the same problems if it's not an even number.

What I meant was, there are complaints that gg's Umineko which is 848x480 and displayed in 853x480 is lagging, but the encodes at 848x480 without ratio correction are fine. Assuming the bitrate/method of encoding didn't change (mucH), then that would be the problem.

Yeah, the newest release of Umineko from gg isn't trying to display an 848x480 video in 853x480, so I guess that was somehow eating vast amounts of processor cycles.

This command line deactive the sound, don't show the video (post-processing is done), ASS activated in the config file.

What does strike me as odd is that your 480p encodes of Umineko:

Episode 6 shows aspect ratio correction 853x480, actual resolution 848x480. This encode, and all previous encodes, run sluggishly and have problems.

Episode 7 does not show aspect ratio correction and runs without problems.

First mplayer correct the 853x480 to the nearer resolution usable, Second mplayer decompress at the exact same speed the video if the display resolution is "removed" in the mkv.

Try a different renderer or try to correct the display resolution (mkvmerge gui, load the video, select the video track, "Format specific option" -> Display with/height).

That's odd. The Canaan encodes had no problems whatsoever.

Only the Umineko and Bakemonogatari encodes did.

Video playback is largely dependent on CPU. Getting a better video card will do nothing, unless you get one that is CUDA-enabled and use it with CoreAVC. If you plan to do that, your current video card isn't CUDA-enabled. Here is a list of CUDA-enabled graphic cards: http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_learn_products.html. It might just be better to get a new CPU (and most likely motherboard).

Canaan display size is "good" 852x480 (except episode 5 & 7) whereas Umineko display size is "wrong" 853x480.

Your renderer probably try to create a 853x480 video surface (instead of a 854x480), your video card refuse and you fall back on full software rendering.

Bakemonogatari is a 720p video the problem could come from your CPU not being good enough

In my case I have had absolutely no problem with all of those video.

Have you tried using the Overlay Mixer renderer in Media Player Classic (not windows media player)? The "System Default" MPC uses for XP is actually VMR7 which uses DirectX.

Tran225 I think your 3Ghz P4 is good enough for 720p material. Have you tried other 720p files besides [gg] Bakemonogatari? But, Black Friday is always a good time to get a new machine too

Everyone would assume a Celeron-M 353 isn't good enough to play 720p video, but mine does. =P

Just certain files from [gg] are not playing right. I tested a bunch of 720p releases, all of 'em worked fine.

The Celeron-M should be near it's limit with 720p so having some file not playing smoothly should be normal. Depending on the way the video has been encoded the decoding could be a little more CPU intensive and ASS rendering can eat a lot of resources.

I should try to underclock my E6750 to see the minimal clock speed it can use to decode 720p. From my test on a Athlon X2 that was near the 1.4-1.6Ghz mark (with a little margin).

But if you can't play 480p files then the problem is with the setting of your player more than on anything else so try a different renderer or change the display resolution in the file.

The problem files are 480p, not 720p, so that's what's stumping me. 720p encodes are playing fine but these Umineko episodes aren't.

tl;dr, but an encode's decoding complexity is not only decided by its resolution. Encoding settings (level/profile) and bitrate factor into it a _lot_. Have you checked if those problematic encodes are comparable in that way?

i really want my computer to last me for another good 5 years, since u say i have good enough GHZ (3 GHZ) do u think a new video card would help? i dont plan on doing any intense gaming, mostly anime thats why i wanna stick with this computer

yes have tried Nire's Spice and Wolf II file size was approx 348k-ish .mkv about the size of gg's bakemonogatari also and it had audio desync with picture too

The only difference between the Umineko #06 and Umineko #07 are the presence of or absence of aspect ratio correction. The encodes with aspect ratio correction have problems, the ones that don't run flawlessly.
