I'm pretty much an anime-only viewer since I only saw a bit of the first ep of the VN after watching the anime. I think she's a very interesting character. During the first two arcs she is shown mostly an a laughing villainess, but even then it seemed like there was more to her than that. Though I applauded when Battler slapped her and told her what was on his mind, that was exactly what I wanted to do since the Kanon\Jessica scene. (not because I'm a fan of them, but because she seemed unnecessarily cruel there, "too heartless", just like Battler said.) Nevertheless, she's always fun to watch, I warmed up to her after seeing her reaction, and I hope her fate will turn out to be no less unusual than her personality.

I wonder why Beatrice is nicknamed Beato instead of the Italian nickname for Beatrice, "Bice" (Bi-che)

Would that be Beat in the roman alphabet? "Beato" is cute, but sounds pretty Engrish xD

Probably because Ryukishi is not aware of the existence of such diminutives. "Bice" and "Bea" are both valid options and commonly used. Ryukishi also doesn't seem to be aware that italian names ending with "o" are all male names, or that "beato" is actually an italian male adjective that implies a state of serenity and happyness.

What about Beato's slutty friend's version, "Riiche"? Is that one valid? I thought it sounded more elegant than "Beato" at least xD

I don't really have any experience of such a way to shorten "Beatrice", but using the last two syllables of a name is actually pretty common in Italy (although it doesn't work with all of them). And I can testify that names that end with "lia" (like Rosalia) are very often shortened as "Lia".

Ah Beatrice, out of all the witches so far she's my favorite, with Lambdadelta coming in close second. She does a great job at upholding the title of witch. Not cliche in her appearance and yet retaining the mastery of magic and mischevious antics all witches are known for and should retain in any incarnation.~

She doesn't cruelly kill like Eva-Beatrice did (which just made me wanna punch her in the face) and kept a nice amount of sophistication and planning when commiting the twilights, and unlike Bernkastel she's not afraid to show her childish wacky side at times when it's alright to do so. She may be a little cocky at times but she's willing to accept that she makes errors when they happen.

Not to mention her appearance really breaks the cliche that witches should be dirty ratty old hags. And her outfit is a very gorgeous European gothic style belle dress, not all that cliche pointy hats and black cloaks.

All-in-all an awesome character, and my favorite one from the meta-world cast.

Slutty friend? Please don't tell me you're talking about Gaap...

Gaap is not a slut, she's just crazy.

Beato is preferred by Beatrice because of her strange sense of "cuteness".

Well Beatrice's name is pronounced "Bay-ah-toe-rii-chee" So while "Beato" takes from the beginning of her name "Riiche" takes from the end part of her name.

Gaap does have a strange nack for shortening names down to their last one or two syllables. She always called me "Ensel" instead of "Elo" or "Ero" which happens be my nick. Anyways, enough of her nickname, how about her real name? Beatrice is only an inherited name passed down as a title from teacher to student after the student has surpassed the teacher. This is shown by the exchange of the name between Virgillia and her disciple, the present Beatrice, and Beatrice to Eva.

Haha really? Anyone who dresses as indecently as her is slutty in my book

I didn't say Gaap's name when that was posted because she would have counted as a 'spoiler' for anime-only viewers at the time^^;

Yes, I was only wondering at the time whether or not "Riiche"/Rice was actually a common nickname for Italian girls named Beatrice. Since "Beato" obviously isn't, and I've only heard of "Bice" being an irl popular option ;P

Speculation Here:
Spoiler for Speculation:

Does that give any clue to the mystery? Rosa would've been there at that time. 20 Years later...

Sorry I don't know where I"m going with this
