I'm dying to know, but I know that it probably will never be revealed what it is..
It's probably something tame and up Kanbaru's alley, like girl on girl porno mags.

I totally agree with it. When I watched episode 9, something made me uneasy. I wasn't sure what it was at that time, but... Yes, it's because of the IGN parody. The parody itself was a fun, but it's based on men's prejudice on a lesbian, unfortunately. Even in the novel, Kanbaru does not response to Nadeko's bloomers the way that the anime presented and she acts more thoughtfully to make Nadeko feel comfortable.

Makes you wonder if she'll bring up the topic with Senjougahara, though then again i wouldn't be surprised if she already knows.

@hei - Read the first post. Posting spoilers regarding future events are against the rules. I wish i didn't click on it (doesn't help that it wasn't even labeled), so could you please remove that part of the post to stop spoiling anyone else in the future.

My issue is, rather, despite Koyomi's supposed 'kindness' or altruism being the foundation, the fact that this story is about a precisely desperate relationship anyway. It's just kinda ugly to watch: all that threatening, ridiculous teasing, and bullshit violence--and for what? Only 'cause Senjougahara wants to make sure Araragi stays with her, and Araragi wants to get laid.
That's an interesting take on their relationship.

However I tend to disagree - at least within the realm of Anime-Relationships. You have to appreciate that both are very clear and serious about their intentions. For one despite probing Araragi with her ridiculous teasing about his being a virgin, his 'perversions' and how he relates to other girls (think Hanekawa) Hitagi states the reasons for her behaviour afterwards. Which is refreshening.

I'll give that Araragi isn't very much in control how the relationship develops, his reaction to Hitagi's affection were mostly surprise - however he's not giving himself up in the process (although the references to being the submissive part in a boys love romance ... well ).

As for Hitagi being emotionally stunted - well as far as I can see she has problems with openly showing her emotions in fear of being hurt (again) - and luckily for her Araragi at least doesn't get hurt by her superficial banter and instead sticks with her long enough that she can become more serious.

...uhm long post. Well I very much enjoy the series. Also: death to all super-shy girlish anime characters for the sake of prolonging the drama.

What I like in this episode about Araragi is that he was so thoughtful about Senjougahara. It showed that he did have affection to Senjougahara and planned to live with her. It indicated that this wasn't a one side force love from Senjougahara.

Agree!!! At this point, I'm not sure if I can watch generic harem shows anymore.

Anime/manga series with non-dense male protagonists don't exist because the series would be over before it even started.

That isn't the case for Shoujo manga.

Then that simply means that many mangaka authors do not have the literary skill to introduce, develop, and maintain a non-dense male character/protagonist.

It seems to me many of them tend to be horrible authors and couldn't write their way out of a grade 3 composition exam.

Perhaps it is just following a formula in order to make money and pay the bills.

I am not in the industry so I can arm-chair critique, perhaps in ignorance, as much as possible.

Perhaps its a demographic choice.

Perhaps the people who buy/read/watch the manga/anime are put off by non-dense male heroes ?

Is this the same effect as Japanese porn only showing men with below average length penises ?

That they want the males to feel good about themselves so they create and sponsor ineffectual male protagonisits ?

Usuaually the women are the dense ones in shoujo.

I was basically nodding my head for the most part of your post, until I got to the part above, and then started LOL.

So in the west where the fans look up to the protagonists and think "Man, I want to be like that. That's bad-ass cool." After which they feel good for idolizing these men.

Some eastern fans see these dense and low-self-esteemed protagonists and think "Man, I'm not alone in the world. I can continue feeling low but the girls will still like me, I'll still win in the end, simply because I'm Ikari Shinji, err ... Keitaro... err.. I mean, simply because I'm the protagonist of the story." After which they feel good for identifying with such heroes.

Well, there is Option C:

The guy or girl (whichever viewpoint the story is from) isn't dense... so to make things interesting, thousands of hurdles are thrown in their way, and that usually leads to a thing called drama (or in other situations, comedy)

... but the dense protagonists sell far better. So, are you going to go with an idea that sorta new and therefore hasn't been tried out (i.e., neither party is dense and we can get somewhere early on) and you have no idea how well it will work, or an idea that has been used thousands of times before, can be frustrated, but STILL IS KNOWN TO MAKE MONEY?

As fans, we have seen the storyline thousands of times, and the authors too may be sick of it, but they know that readers will buy it... and at the end of the day, it's all about how you get food on the table in RL

[/end rant]

A contrived obstacle course has its own problems. I've seen this method a few times, and it really gets fans peeved when random events prevent progress. It makes more sense to attribute the problems to character traits rather than things outside their control.

I think big problem in harem series is that their relationships are too ambiguous. They can't make up their mind and confess their feeling for whatever reasons. In the end, it's just an excuse for protagonist to maintain his/her harem. Because everyone still has chance due to the half-heart development and unclear relationship. That is really annoying. IMO <_<

Senjougahara: I don't like that kind of unclear relationship.

And by replying "It's the start of Senjougahara tore", she took that as "I love you too". Right?

I still don't even get why romances always revolve around confessing in the first place.

Why don't they ever date first to test the water?

Then again, anime makes it seem like all of high school relationships end in 100% success anyway, so...

I think because Eastern Culture is very different in Western culture. Not only in Japan but I think in whole of Asia that people only date when they already have a mutual attraction to each other, casual dating is rarely done to "test the waters". You have to confess first then proceed to the dating stage when the other party says yes.

Their aim is harem.. That's why they cant decide one girl from the start.
Look how many story mode ends up in harem because the main guy cant decide who he should drop...

Haill Senjougahara fascination...

Oh, my bad! I'm sorry about that. I did not intend to spoil future events, but I should have known that it could be a spoiler to others.

In addition, I thank the moderator for their immediate reaction.
