Post The Ero-Game Thread (Parental Discretion Adviced)

Throughout the relatively short time I've been frequenting forums, I have seen a clear majority of people who claim to prefer the ren'ai ("pure love") type of ero-games, and that they would buy them even if there was no sexual content. Kana - Little Sister is a game lauded for its contents, and some even say that the game would be much better without the very few adult scenes it has (though it probably wouldn't have been translated then).

This seems to contradict somewhat the games that are offered in the English market. There are plenty ren'ai games in Japan that have no sexual content, but are never translated, like Tokimeki Memorial. The very few that have been translated haven't been a success. Graduation is an example here. Right Stuf sells Graduation for $8, and despite the great deal, people still don't seem interested in buying it. Also, those who frequent pages like Peach Princess and JAST might notice how the site states that the darker games like Shukketsubo (Virgin Roster) sell very well. These darker games are called kitiku ("devil", I think it means) games, though I'm not sure if a relatively "mild" (compared to what Japan has) dark game like Virgin Roster would be defined as kitiku.

Anyway, a few possible conclusions can be drawn from this:

1. A lot of people buy darker games, but they are either ashamed to admit they like them, or they don't post much in forums (compared to ren'ai fans)

2. People who claim to prefer ren'ai games are lying, most actually prefer kitiku games.

3. Sites like JAST is lying about great sales (great being a relative term here), and companies like G-Collections are translating them despite losing a lot of money on it.

Of those, I'd say #1 is most likely. People are either ashamed to admit they like rape-themed games, or they are simply the type who don't frequent forums. Darker games (and games which are almost 98% sex and 2% story) selling well would also be consistent with the popular adult anime, where story takes a back-seat to sex, or is kicked out of the car altogether.

Ero-games is a very diverse genre, though in English it is nowhere nearly as diverse as in Japan. Genres range from simple Bishoujo (beautiful girl), Lolicon (with girls that look/act very young), Kitiku (think Overfiend), Cosplay (nurse, maid etc), games like strip Mah-jongg/Jan-ken-pon etc, "Forbidden relations" (teacher-student, brother/sister etc) and much more. The lack of diversity in the English market is mostly an economic one; ero-games don't really sell all that well, so companies don't want to risk losing big money by translating the more complex games like RPGs and the really long novel-style games.

Anyway, I'm curious as to what relationship the members of AnimeSuki has to ero-games (or "hentai" games as I'm sure most still call them), which is why I made a little poll for this thread.

Hmm. Weird poll. But casted my votes nonetheless...

I have certain "dark" titles but usually I like fluffy and happy titles better. My favorite genres are SLG and RPG, but they are really few and far between in bishoujo game realm.

The kitiku games selling well is the main reason ero-games with a plot don't sell that well. The market that these companies have already established doesn't want plot, just sex. Since that's what has been delivered, any game released has that reputation. Since the people buying the kitiku games don't want plot, and other people think those games are the typical "hentai game" won't even look at them, these games don't sell well. If a different company, one that doesn't have a reputation for "hentai games", were to release and market the editted version, preferably for a console, the sales results would be quite different. The ren'ai fans going to forums and complaining aren't a large enough market to warrent releasing these games. They need to reach a broader audience, which they can't do unless no one connects them to "hentai games".

I've also played Kana: imoto, and I have to agree the game would be better without the sex scenes.

You are certainly right about the console part. More and more game producers are shifting their focus to consoles, which have less piracy and shows a substantial growth compared to PC games. Of course, you can't market ero-games on consoles (not the current ones, at least), so I guess it's bye-bye to those. Which is sad, IMO. Of course, I'd love to see even non-adult bishoujo games translated, but I would prefer to play them on my PC.

Well, to each his own. While I didn't appreciate the premises for some of them, the existence of the adult scenes at certain points did serve a purpose. Of course you could have substituted it with something less... graphic (which I assume the Japanese XBOX version will do), but I kinda like it the way it is.

Ok, i finally asked my parents and they said that it was ok for me to post here.

IM not going to lie, i checked out a few. But it seems to me that almost every single game i played had at least one chick getting raped by some old fat japanese businessman, which i could do with out seeing. I keep saying to myself, it must suck to be a 17 year old school girl in japan and have to take the subway home with all these horny japanese businessmen.

I guess thats the target audience in japan for these types of games.

The difficult thing is - even softhouses that don't want to put in sex scenes for their story based games, are forced to do so.

These softhouses are small that they can't enter into the console market directly without any background sales to back them up.

The only market left available to them is the rather "free and open" ero-game market for the PC.

So, people may ask then: "why don't they leave out the sex scenes in the PC version if they only want to focus on story?"

Because when one company did, it failed - "Graduation." Though it had a good story, the market had difficulty on where to place "Graduation" when it was released. It wasn't an ero-game so it couldn't be in the "18 and over" section, but it wasn't what you call "a regular PC game" as well. What happened was it was placed aside along with the regular "software" section, which in itself seemed out of place.

Let's face it. The majority of otakus roaming around Akihabara's game shops head directly toward the "18 and over" floor. Seriously - you should compare the number the of people in the regular games floor to the "18 and over" section. If majority of the people who buy such games go to the "18 and over" section, hey it is very unlikely to see games without nudity or sex scenes placed in that floor.

Good story, great story, doesn't matter - if people want to buy an "18 and over" game over a regular game, then sex sells. And, if that ero-game sells enough to make it marketable as a console, all the softhouses have to do is to dig out their "no-sex-scene" plan from their harddrives.

Yeah, I recently ordered Graduation at Right Stuf (though it hasn't arrived yet), and I was surprised to see that it only costed 8 dollars. It's almost scary to think that they can't even sell it at that price.

Back when I was pirating ero-games, I heard about Graduation, and since it was supposed to be good (except for a horrible dubbing job), I wanted to download it. But despite searching p2p networks and the entire net, I couldn't find it for download. Even pirates aren't interested in bishoujo games without sex! How messed up is that?

Of course, I'm still hoping I will one day get to play a bishoujo game that has a great story, great gameplay AND adult content. I'm so naive it's almost cute.

No, I think learning Japanese is the only way out for me. Still waiting for Amazon to ship those damn books I ordered for it...

I tend to find myself skipping past the sex scenes most of the time. (I refuse to use the word "adult", it's an important word for describing things of maturity, and the pornographers are stealing it from us!) They very seldom really function as titillation for me, and don't tend to do much else.

Having said that, I wouldn't consider removing the sex scenes from Kana for a second. No matter how embarassing you might find it, sex is a very important factor in human relationships, and so when used properly, to remove it would be to render the target incomplete.

(Not that using sex as titillation is improper of course, it's a perfectly reasonable and natural thing for humans to do, but you know what I mean. In a storytelling sense.)

Damn, I couldn't even buy a third rate re-released PC game here for that price I bet the postage costs more than the game!! That is quite disturbing.

I've relatively recently become an ero-game 'convert' and yes, as expected it has been responsible for a certain interest in acquiring at least a modicum of ability with the Japanese language (at least, in part anyway). I've gradually grown tired of the usual RTS and RPG , and this makes a nice change - new pastures and all.

I've only experienced : Kanon, Kana -Imouto- , Muv Luv and KGNE so far (and essentially not understood completely, except for Kanon and Kana), but it's a start right?

Fate/Stay night is looking very interesting though

I agree with AG3 (and Lambda) regarding Kana though - you could have done without the afforementioned scenes, but I think this would have left something distinctly missing from the story in this case.

AG3 : waiting for Amazon to ship Japanese learning materials huh? I regularly see 4-6 weeks waiting time for restock.... the best part is, you place an order for some items that come into stock before the last item... what happens? The limited items just in stock run out just as the last one comes in.... thus, your whole order gets reset... to square 1 - smart! *sigh* - and all just because you want to save on shipping....

The only reason I would play an ero-game would be because I loved the anime version of it, an example would be Kanon, Tuskihime, and Da Capo. I don't know any Japanese so I would never be able to play any of them and I'm too lazy to learn another language. I already know 3 so that's enough for me.

Yeah, I ended up buying a Vash the Stampede plush doll, some Trigun keyrings and a bunch of other stuff just to make it worth the shipping costs. I prefer J-list to Right Stuf, much more diverse wares you can order to make it worth shipping.

Yeah, and if you find something else you like, and then merge orders to save more shipping, the shipping date is delayed by the number of days you had to wait for the product with the longest waiting time. For example, if you order something with 4-6 weeks waiting time, then after 5 weeks merge the order with something that has 24 hours waiting time, the shipping date will be delayed by another 4-6 weeks. It's screwed up.

Well, even if I get the books, it'll take a long time before I have learned enough to notice a difference when playing these games.

Sure, you can buy translated ero-games them at G-Collections, Peach Princess or JAST USA, to mention a few sites.

Fanmade translations of ero-games are very rare, and 100% completed translations even more so (non-existant?). The only released ero-game translations I know of are Kanon and Mizuiro (and Wind: A breath of heart, maybe?), and they aren't anywhere near 100% finished.

Talking

Im gonna have to say that I've played a great bishoujo/hentai games and Im not ashamed to say that I like every bit of it. I find it rather relaxing at times to play them rather than console & regular PC games at times.

So far, my favorite is Kango Shicyauzo 1 & 2. I don't know why but the funny humor in the series just gets to me that I can't help but to like it along with the funny voice acting. People may have a different opinion on this but who cares, this is me Im talkin about.

Anyway, I've only played a few games that were turned into animes. Some of them are Tsuki-Hime, Raimuiro Senkitan, Kanon, One, Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, D.C. ~Da.Capo~, Popotan, & Pia Carrot 1 - 3.

Either way, I play out of pure enjoyment of it......even if it does or doesn't have sex scenes in them. I have to admit that I do play games like Tsuki-Possession & Virgin Roster and end up liking them while Im playing them but the I can't help but to hate them in some points of time but I still like them regardless (I just wont never touch Sensei 2.......gawd the artwork in that game looks horrible). Anyway, just enjoy whichever type of bishoujo/hentai or non-hentai games you like and don't feel ashamed of it.

I need to play Fate/Stay Night when I get a chance.....I just never installed it yet. As the great Shinobu-Maehara (of Anime Toshokan Inc) would say: "IM A HENTAI AND I WOULD LIKE TO HUMP CHICKS~~~~~"!!
