DPU - Picture It - September/October - Voting Thread

Digital Photographers United - Picture It
September/October - Theme: Sky

Competition Rules:

Only your own work!
The picture must be taken by you and the processing of it must be done by yourself as well. Joint entries are allowed but in this case all the participants must be credited. If you get caught posting stolen works, the entries will be rejected and you'll be excluded from the current event. This means that you won't be allowed to re-enter to the competition with a different entry.

Only photographic elements!
While composing your final entry out of several photos is allowed. All the elements in your entry must be photographic. You can combine several of your own photos into a single image and process it as you wish but no artificial elements are allowed. You can use brushes, textures etc, elements to make corrections to your entry, for example you can add film grain or paper texture to the image but you're not allowed to use these to create new elements to the picture or change the properties of the existing ones.
As an exception to this rule you're allowed to add borders of your liking to your entry.

Technical regulations:
Submit your entry as a JPEG image. Maximum dimensions are 1600x1600px. Filesize is unlimited.

Theme: (by Ledgem)
Sky
Whether clouds are present or not; whether in the day or the night; regardless of what ever else is shown, your photo should emphasize the sky in a meaningful way. (For technical limitations, I'd suggest that the sky take up at least 20% of your picture's area.)

Entries:
You can view larger versions (if available) of the entries by clicking them.
Entries listed in alphabetical order.

About voting:

You're not allowed to vote for your own entry.
Comments about the entries and the competition as a whole are more than welcome.

Is this a newly created competition? I haven't seen it before. It's a very good idea though! Just wish I had photographic skills to enter.

All the entries look really beautiful. b

I think it's safe to say that I live in a city with the most boring sky ever.

Here's another one for you escimo!

Voting escimo, I just love when the sky is like that. But honestly, all the entries are very good.

Ended up voting for Ledgem. Tough choice though. I really liked GuidoHunter_Toki's entry as well. It has quite unique feel to it, however Ledgem's entry took an original approach to the theme. I liked the idea of photographing the reflection of the sky rather than the sky itself.

Hard... vewwy hard to choose. I have to go with GuidoHunter_Toki, as I like such dark, mysterious sky shots. escimo was probably extremely close second, but a bit too colorful for my liking.

My comments and criticisms... if you're the photographer and don't want to risk getting your feelings hurt, don't read on. These are just my opinions, and they're meant to act as a guide for how to improve ("improve" Ledgem-style; what's good, bad, or improvement is completely subjective):

Spoiler for Commentary and Criticisms:

Well done to all entrants. And to anyone else who has a digital camera, even if it's just your cellphone - join in on the next contest! While it's arguably easier to take great pictures with better photography gear, artistic vision is not limited to what camera is in your hand (nor is it automatically given to those with better gear).

Oh I don't mind criticism. It always helps me know what I'm good at and where I need to improve when someone gives some constructive criticism.

The poll is now closed and the winner is yours truly.
Thanks for the votes everybody.

The next theme will be announce shortly.

As a reminder, this contest is open for all AnimeSuki Members, so even if you're not a member of the Digital Photographers United social group, you're very welcome to enter.

And as Ledgem stated it doesn't really matter what gear you're packing it's the photo that counts not what it was taken with.

You're also free to enter your older works as long as they fit the given theme so the entry doesn't have to be taken specifically for the contest.

Theme for November/December event:
Adventures in Low Key Land

Low key is a style of lighting which predominance of shadowy areas and emphasizes the contours of the subject. Entries don't need to be textbook low key photos. Film noir styled photos will do nicely. In essence dark and contrasty.
