Get betta' or die tryin!

So here's the deal all my cool new forum buddies, I'm sick.

Now let me elaborate, earlier this week I came down with something like an upper respiratory cold. For anyone who might not know what that is, just think a lot coughing and mucus. After two days feeling like the living dead, I went back to work (bad idea) and got stuck outside wet for about 30 minutes in the cold (another bad idea.) As a result of me doing this I am once again... Dun dun dun sick! In fact I almost just sneezed on my dog. So my real question to all of you is, what do you do when your sick and sore? Any special remedies from far away lands I could try?

Before anyone says "Hey dummy go see a doc!" I have been to the doc's. Its just a really bad cold, I'm looking for ways to a speedier recovery (and making conversation hehe)

Sex

Now it may sound ridiculous, but it can work wonders. The heavy sweating can allow you sweat out the illness.

You can try exercising instead... but its not quite as fun lol

Ehhh what happened to just drinking fluids and resting well (maybe with some vit. C supplements?)

I'd rather take some time getting better than using a shortcut and maybe getting sick again later.

My way of dealing with a cold probably isn't terribly recommended. I'll chug down a 20oz Vault (or something similarly caffeinated) to bring up my heart rate and general metabolism. Typically, I'll break a sweat in about half an hour, and my temperature will spike a little so that I burn it out. About an hour later I'll actually feel pretty normal and my temp returns to normal. It's a little odd, since if I'm not sick, it won't have any effect on my pulse / temp at all.

It might seem highly counter-intuitive, since everybody will always tell you "don't eat too much sugar when you're sick," but I haven't been sick for more than 12 to 24 hours in the last 8 years, so it seems to work for me at least. I suspect many people would simply make themselves feel sick(er) attempting the same thing, though.

The sex idea is a good one, reminds me of the sauna idea I heard awhile back. Both of which I do think would put me out of commission for a while. I'm trying to stay on top of the whole drinking thing, but honestly my bladder can only take so much, I want to exchange to a bigger one.

oh now that's an interesting idea neat! it makes perfect sense where you are coming from. Hmm, I wonder if I could give that a try or something. Since this is just a cold, although my fever has already broke so maybe I'll just try that next time.

"What to do when you're sick" can vary a lot depending on why you're sick. But the general rules apply, even if most people don't follow them:
- Get proper rest.
- Get proper nutrition.
- Stay positive.

Your mental attitude means far more in your ability to function during sickness and your ability to recover than any single other factor. If underrested or undernourished, though, you will find it hard to maintain a sunny outlook due to sheer chemistry. If you have those taken care of, then you must focus on your victories and determine new ones... like getting well.

In summary: Ganbatte.

Dimetapp. Everytime I feel roughness in my throat, I take some and don't get sick.

I got the positive/rest thing in the bag. As far as nutrition... does a multi-grain bar and freezie pops count? I just have absolutely no will to eat anything currently. I should really look into eating something though.

Vicodin. I kid you not. So now all you need to do is break into a drug store or fake pain. And your diet's shit, mate. I drink a lot of smoothies, to off-set the damaging effects of my coffee and vicodin addiction mostly not because I'm a health nut mind you. So yeah fruit and vicodin.

For a speedier recovery you need to a stronger immune system, so you get improved resistance to infection and faster recovery time when you do get ill. This calls for a healthy lifestyle (research nutrition, get enough rest, keep hydrated etc.) rather than handful of short-term tricks which almost certainly don't work. Or well, they may, but nothing really changes biochemically, your mind just focuses on the illness and therefore you get better faster. This is called a placebo.

I heard that fasting helps to detoxify your system when you're ill though, so you may be on the right track not eating anything or very little for now.

I really wasn't joking about that vicodin. I had my first bad cold a month ago and it was horrible, coughing and sneezing REALLY hard, my voice was gone, and then I said "what the hell" and popped a vicodin and I got beter, fast.

Ah ah very interesting stuff Kakashi, I knew of some of those terms such as placebo. Gave me a flashback to abnormal psyc. I didn't know about the fasting portion though, thats a new take, I like it.

Never meant to imply you were joking Nostalgia. It just struck me as funny. Because last time I was on it I tried licking the paint off my walls. Flashback is all flashback.

I will tell you out of shitty experiece..Take. your. T.I.M.E! Stay put till you are really really cured! In the moment I have big problems with my health and I'm more sick than everything else but I never rested enough and got up again. That's why I always fell sick again (okay and my immune system is sh**) The problem now is that I can't effort to rest again, don't make the same mistake.

Yeah I completely agree with you Kitsu. Going back to work the day I went back completely zapped everything out of me. In some ways I think I might have caught something on top of my original illness.

If you only knew the trouble I've seen while under the influence of various things. What a doozy.

One time I was really dehydrated and swore I saw purple flying turtles, told my brother he was a moron and needed to shoot them out of the sky with our nuclear powered grand am. After I told him this he promptly told me to shut up and go to sleep. Ahhh memories.

Haha. I see the ceiling swirling a lot but that's about it. My drug tolerance is way too high.

You can try some herbal tea depending on the symptoms of your illness. For example:

Fennel corns> Good for the bronchial tubes.
Hawthorn corns> Good against the fever.
White jasmine> Can help against the flu.
Dry borage> Good if you cough, and if your throat hurts.

etc.

There are also some trace-element specialists who believe that some trace-element are useful when you catch a cold or the flu, and to prevent those illness. (for example: copper and manganeze)

But don't forget to rest, and to go see a doctor if you feel really bad and to ask them any questions you have about what I said above.
