Near-Future/Alternative Present Action

Hi there. I'm looking for a specific kind of action show.
  • The setting should be either Near-Future or Alternative present. This means it should be set on an Earth that has some differences from regular modern setting, such as futuristic technology or existence of special abilities, but shouldn't be completely unrecognizable. I don't want post-apocalyptic settings, alien planets, or far futuristic settings.
  • The action I'm looking for should be primarily individuals engaging in combat. That is to say, the action should be mainly person-to-person, primarily with weapons like guns or swords, rather than concentrating on ships or mecha of some sort. Characters possessing powers of some sort are acceptable, but not necessary.
  • There should be a fairly interesting plot. I don't want something that is designed solely on gore or explosions.
  • Some examples of what I'm looking for would include Darker than Black, Ga-Rei Zero, and Canaan.

Let me see what you got.
My anime list for reference.

I only know one vampire show, but sounds like you might enjoy it. Seen Black Blood Brothers yet?

Not gonna work hard for such requests, sorry. Oh it is so hard to please me and I do not tell you what I have seen already type... Nothing against you personally.

You seem unnecessarily antagonistic. I suppose I did leave out my list, I'll add that. But as far as "Oh it is so hard to please me," I'm just trying to be specific about what I want. More useful than "I'm looking for action anime, thanks" in my opinion. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Try watching Full Metal Panic. Its setting is an alternate Cold War in which alternative technology has changed warfare quite a great deal. Yes it has mechs but there is a pretty good plot and interesting characters.

Btw, I see you haven't seen Monster yet. Give that a try too.

s-Cry-ed is all i can think of. Though it may be somewhat post apocalyptic i guess.

Hmm. I wasn't aware of the setting of FMP, which interests me. Is all of the action in mecha or just some of it?

As far as Monster, I watch about 1/3 of it several years ago but the plot started to get a little odd and I got busy and never finished it. It's on the "On Hold" section. I plan on finishing it some day.

As long as it's not akin to Road Warrior/Mad Max-everything-is-destroyed-and-we-live-in-a-wasteland-style setting, which it doesn't seem to be. Thanks for the suggestion.

Try Kurozuka. It might have the mix you're looking for.

Have you checked the likes of Zettai Karen Children (from the same director as the first season of Hayate no Gotoku and Cross Game), or To Aru Kagaku no Railgun/To Aru majutsu no Index. The battles are primarely power based, but they got some nifty gadgets in an alternative reality sort of present.

For God's sake, Man, I hope you're watching Needless. It's a perfect match for your description.

Blood+ also perfectly matches your description and has a lot of action. Gungrave should also fit the bill.

Of course I know you can get even more post-apocaliptic than that, but I don't think that's what he's searching for given his opening post.

Hmm... most of it, though there's not an insignificant amount of hand-to-hand and gun action (mecha fights are expensive to animate :P )... it's got a strong military theme, so expect something along those lines. Mecha fights are... kinda like person-to-person, they just happen to be by proxy of giant metal machines, I dunno if that's still acceptable.

Also tends to alternate between hardcore military operations and wacky toss-a-soldier-into-high-school school life antics.

As for suggestions of my own... Shakugan no Shana? Basically set in the real world, but containing magic/fantasy elements, has action and a decent plot.

There's not much else on my own list that fits what you're looking for... maybe check out the Dogs: Bullets & Carnage OVA? There wasn't much background in the OVAs but it's basically near-future criminal underworld.

Ghost in the Shell is probably too far-future for your criteria but I'll throw it out there anyway.

Although there isn't a lot of action (there is a little) you should check out Planetes, it's probably the most fascinating near-future anime I've seen because I can actually see pretty much all of it becoming reality.

Despite being a mecha show, FMP does this very, very well, at least as far as anime goes. It is also IMO that funniest anime there is.

The premise sounds pretty unique, I think I'll take a look.

I'm currently watching Railgun and Index. Zettai Karen Children looks kind of similar but more kiddy?

As Proto says, it sounds as though it might be a little to "the world as we know it is gone" for what I'm looking for at the moment, but I'll put it down to check out later on. Thanks.

Dogs: Bullets & Carnage OVA?
Ghost in the Shell
Shakugan sounds excellent, Dogs I'll put for later. As far as Ghost in the Shell goes, I've seen the movie. I know there's a TV show too. Which were you suggesting?

I am currently watching this one already and I certainly agree with you. Thanks though.

You didn't have Black Cat on your list D:
And I am seconding Dogs

Also the Ghost in the Shell TV series, since you only had the movie listed on your watch list

Black Cat: It is kind of an alternative now, the main character uses a gun and the side a suitcase that has a lot of functions (personally I like the manga a lot more since the anime uses an alternative ending)
Dogs: Alternative present time, no laser riffles and all that just old fashioned weapons
The action is great but the OVA still needs to do quite some releasing, the manga is very good also
GITS SAC: does it really need a why D: it has all technology parts of the movies, but it is less serious I would say. Very enjoyable to watch

Have you seen Bounen no Xam'd? I thought it was pretty interesting, it's somewhat confusing for a bit but I was able to follow along pretty well.

edit:
And I agree with whoever recommended FMP (full metal panic), it's a very funny show.

and i'm sure you've seen the other big names like Code Geass and Death note right?

2nd edit:
Okay just saw your completed list. You haven't seen Macross Frontier? but you've seen the other installments? I'd give frontier a try, i reallllly loved the music, though the romance part of this anime was a bit frustrating, but i don't want to give out too much so just watch it for yourself and see. It's still very enjoyable.

Here are some suggestions:

Ar Tonelico: This is a promotional ova which is untrue to the actual game. If you are two hours into the game, you will understand why when you watch this. It seems that a lot of people are disappointed..

Blassreiter: I know the official wallpapers give the impression that this is an ecchi anime but it is nothing like that. Somehow, it has something to do with a deep sea metallic organism that causes humans to turn into mechanical zombies sort of thing but battles aside, the story also focuses on religious issues, as well as the relations between the Germans and the Jews sort of thing.

Chrno Crusade: This has nothing to do with Chrono Cross or Chrono Trigger, even though the title of the anime may imply it. Nonetheless, this anime follows the church's perspective on demons and exorcism sort of thing.

Chrome Shelled Regios: This anime is based on the first few volumes of the 10+ volume manga series. It is pretty much about a katana wielder who refuses to fight with a katana and uses a sword instead which gives his opponents a handicap but he still wins.

Devil May Cry: The title of the anime is quite self-explanatory except one thing.. If you are expecting to see Devil Trigger, forget it. It does not happen..

Eien no Aseria: This is a promotional ova based on the visual novel which features Kawamura Yumi's debut OP. Aside from that, the story of the promotional ova makes little sense as that too much stuff got removed. Generally, its about a guy and a girl who got teleported to a world of fairies and they do battles. Aseria is the name of the female lead, a yousei.

Growlanser IV: Wayfarer of the Time: This is a promotional ova of the PS2 game which fits your description perfectly. However, this anime has a very short story and features a ED that shows most of the main characters of the series: Growlanser, Growlanser II, and Growlanser IV.

Izumo: Takeki Tsurugi no Senki: This anime can be considered as a sequel to the visual novel as that it takes place decades, if not centuries after it. It starts off with the main characters getting angry at each other over a kendo match only to be teleported to a parallel universe that appears to be quite futuristic. However, that world is not the future but rather the afterlife.

Kara no Kyoukai 5: Mujun Rasen: This is based on a light novel series and is the fifth movie but the story does not follow a chronological order. Generally, Ryougi Shiki has the special Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, the most powerful version in the Naru-verse. However, her opponents are also very powerful as usual, of course..

Legend of Regios: This is a special feature that is connected to the anime series Chrome Shelled Regios. Or rather to say, this is the entire movie of what keeps on occurring in almost every episode involving a gun man, a lady, and an escort all speak English and the color of the cutscenes are different than the rest.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS: This is the third season and it takes place about a decade after the debut. Takamachi Nanoha now have to spend time with two B-rank mages while Feito-sama do different things. There is also a yousei in it now. However, I have only watched the first episode, so the overall story may not be the same as what it seems. Generally, Feito-sama and Takamachi Nanoha are back!

Persona -trinity soul-: This takes place 10 years after the events of P3 FES. Two members of S.E.E.S. returns as cameo while a female waitress at the beginning of the anime resemble a younger version of Kirijou Mitsuru. However, considering that Sanada Akihiko is around 30.. That lady is no where Mitsuru-sempai but more like some random lady who shares a similar appearance. Igor do appear near the beginning but he does not have any assistants. The new main characters do not summon using evokers or cards but naturally. In fact, they made it sound like the guys and girls are using drugs as opposed to summoning persona like the entire series. Quite a number of people had found the Whale's Feather concept to be confusing but if you watch it from beginning to end, it is quite clear as to what the concept had imply.

Phantom ~Requiem_for_the_Phantom~: This is based on the visual novel "Phantom of Inferno" and follows a mixed route that is mainly Elen's. The ending is supposed to be very much like Elen's true ending, the good one but the animation studio changed it a bit and made it into a bad ending. Nonetheless, there is going to be a X360 visual novel featuring anime graphics and voicing. The release date is currently unknown.

Ryoko's Case File: Yakushiji Ryoko takes on the bureaucrats and the military, *cough* I mean she takes on supernatural cases involving deities, cyborgs, bioweapons, clones, as well as people who have eternal life sort of thing.

Shining Tears X Wind: This is based on two PS2 games: "Shining Tears" and "Shining Wind". It generally takes place after a decade after Xion, the protagonist of "Shining Tears" disappeared to become some sort of guardian thing. This anime is somewhat like Eien no Aseria, yousei + human + android vs the same thing.

Strait Jacket: I have never watched this ova before and it is currently in my dropped list. However, this fits your description very well. It is about a guy clad in futuristic armor and fights cyborg sort of thing.

Tales of the Abyss: This is based on the PS2 game of the same name. Not sure if there are any differences between the two versions as that I have spend 1-2 hours on the game. Generally, it is a story about cloning and also Hollow Earth sort of thing.

Tatakau Shisho - The Book of Bantorra: A group of Armed Librarians founded by one of the three legendary deities, Bantorra. Their task is to defeat an evil cult known as the Church of Drowning who has been abducting young males to be brainwashed as zombie-like suicidal bombers with the goal of killing Hamutz Meseta and also to think that they are not humans and will not obtain salvation as that they are not the chosen ones. The Church of Drowning also abduct all sort of people, not just young males to perform suicidal bombings. They also create monsters by getting people to kill each other testing their powers. The popes and leaders of the Church devour humans, as well as do all sort of terrible things. It sounds very much like Karma Society of Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner; Karma Society is a religious foundation which promotes the idea of the apocalypse and also salvation sort of thing.

Tears to Tiara: This anime is based on a visual novel that has received quite high popularity as that it even got ported to the PS3. The story can generally be summed up as: "The mystical journey of Little King Arthur and Lucifer; the two men and their most trusted comrades fought lots of powerful opponents. First, Little King Arthur saves his sister fighting a local greedy mayor. After that, they joined up with the Demon Lord Arawn who is actually Lucifer and along with newfound comrades of the yousei race as well as the original Gael Tribe, they fought against the Imperial Empire, the Red Army, then they fought against a rebellious faction within the Empire and in the end, they finally realized that their true enemy are the creators.. Thus, Little King Arthur and Lucifer as well as their precious and beloved comrades head over to Heaven's Gate to kill the evil dictators.

Trinity Blood: This is a vampire anime which features a priest as the protagonist. The priest is suffering poverty and is always hungry. However, the truth is that the priest only devour vampires and don't eat anything else. The priest turns out to be a special vampire that has nanomachines inside of him which enables the guy to turn into a killing machine.
