Data file buffer

Ok here's my questionwhen i try and play back avi (well any video format) it will play for a few seconds then stop for 2-5 seconds then start again. I figure this is prolly cause it's not buffering the video and is just reading it off the disc and cant keep up with the speed of the movie. so what i'm asking is there anyway to use a buffer to buffer up say 20-60 seconds of the movie so the drive has time to read the data? or is it just some problem with my pc?
also my specs are
P4 2.8Ghz
512MB ram
9700 pro
lite on 811s dvd burnerread speed is 12x dvd and 40x cd
also a pioneer dvd 16x drive
and a lite on 48/24/48 burner.
latest drivers and firmware on all drives.
te pioneer has hacked firmware so its reagion free
i had this problem even before i installed the hacked fireware so i dont think thats to problem.

8x should be more then enough to read a avi from cd flawlessly to play (1x==150kilobytes/second, a typical avi is a bit under a thousand bits per second and 8bits=1byte and any standard cdrom has a seek time of 80-90ms meaning 8x and above should have no problem even with their buitin 256kB-2mB buffers) , ... and in some players there is a buffer, its called a cache. In mplayer I have it set to around 9 megs but it should do okay with 2 or so. Make sure your not accessing the avi with a non-interlieved parser as that can be the cause, interlieved is much more efficient at parsing interlieved (the most common) types of avis. And lastly, I only have a 12k reader, and I can play anything just fine, even with no cache at all.
