Is it possible to need MORE stress?
So, a lot of people are always looking for ways to reduce stress in their lives whether it be from work or other sources. But I've started to notice that I think I need MORE stress in my life.
I'm a sophomore college student and will admit, I've started to slack a bit in college. In high school, I was always very hard working and I've noticed that as I start to slack more and more, I seem to get bored and feel really "meh" about things. It's kind of like the feeling I used to get at the end of summer break when I actually wanted to go back to school because I was so damn bored. I've started trying to add more stress into my life again by working on my own projects and starting to train again (ran XC/track in HS) and weirdly, I feel much better now that I'm busy and more stressed out. Has anyone else found this or am I just a workaholic or something? It's not like I want to be TOO stressed, but just sitting around doing nothing gets really boring and I don't enjoy it at all. But if I make sure I get a workout in and spend at least 6-8 hours working on something that I start to enjoy my free time a lot more.

No, I understand you completely. I'm a junior in college, and I tried to "enjoy" my free time after no classes and being off from work this week. In the end, I just found myself personal projects to complete. >_>
While taking a day or two off to relax is fine, doing it everyday would drive me crazy. I value my free time more when I haven't had it in awhile and it comes in spurts. I think stress is necessary in life at some points, but one shouldn't have too much of it as too much stress can kill. |

Boredom is the driving force of creativity. You can figure out lots of things in your mind when you are not bothered by other trivial things.
If you don't believe me, check out my ancient ancestors, the Greeks of Athens. They had slaves doing all the labor and themselves were spending their lives making philosophy, art and science. Being partially employed myself, I have lots of free time I spend doing creative stuff like sketching, writing stories, reviews, watching anime or writing this post... |

I think you may be confusing stress with busy-ness. Which I realize is not an actual word, but still..
Stress is different, in that it has an actual effect on the body, usually a negative effect, and is oft due to things outside of your control. Filling your time with activities is different, in that YOU have more control over it, thus leading to the sense of accomplishment. Just my 2 cents... Stress, I don't think good for anyone. Keeping busy, sure.

Not feeling any stress is abnormal, really. You should feel some level of stress over something at some point. Not about general life, but about certain events or situations.
Personally, I think I should get more stressed out over things. I'm the sort of person who can narrowly avoid t-boning a pickup on an icy corner and not bat an eye. I use that as an example because that's happened a couple times this year. Whoever was riding with me was pretty freaked out, but I didn't really care. That's the sort of thing you should actually feel stress about, not just day to day stuff. I do know people who are totally addicted to stress, though. They purposely overextend themselves, promise to do tons of stuff for tons of people, and then seem to brag about how busy they are, and how stressed out they are, and how they never have any time to do anything. I guess they get some sort of rush out of it. As a result, none of them are particularly fit, they get sick many times a year, and pop medications and pain killers all the time. That's beyond a healthy "keeping busy" attitude. That's... I don't really know what that is. It's kind of crazy, if you ask me. Even if I am stress-free to the point of peculiarity, I think I'd rather be the way I am than like them. |
