Germany used their battleships primarily for commerce raiding. A truly sad way for such proud class of ship to fade away.

The Japanese didn't want to risk lossing the pride of the navy (these where the Fleet Flagships) like they had lost other ships throughout 1942. The war became an air war in so many ways, both in the Pacific and in Europe that control of the air was usually the deciding factor.
This is predominantly is due to everyone thinking that Battleships would play an instrumental war in a titanic head to head fleet engagement that the Japanese were convinced was going to happen after they were done with all this skirmishing nonsense with air planes.

This assumption turned out to be completely wrong however.

That's general what happens to obsolete weapons and unit formations. Everyone thinks they'll always works and the assumption isn't changed until they fail spectacularly.

New footage of the Yamato movie:

Seriously, the space battle scenes look like something straight out of a Hollywood movie

And another one:

Looks interesting.

Also I finally managed to see the recent 2009 anime sequel to the Space Battleship Yamato film series. It was well animated and had a typical Yamato storyline (and a bunch of nice fleet actions). And the Earth Fleet is not entirely useless this time around.

I hope that between these two films we will get more Yamato (and if they decide to try to continue Yamato 2520...at least make it make sense...it didn't before because half the backstory was suppose to be filled in by the Rebirth movie that didn't come out until 2009).

Space Battleship Yamato [Live Action]

The classic anime that set the measure by which many (if not all) Japanese space-opera is set by is now becoming a live action movie.

Space Battleship Yamato.

Here is the trailer (and it looks awesome!)

Well the visuals look better than the series; that's for sure.

Do you mean the new anime series that came out?
Or do you mean the original 1973 series (and sequels)?

I ask because the 1973 series had excellent animation quality for its time.
It was considered high end for an animation production in which each cell was hand-painted.
Unlike today's anime which is all computer enhanced/produced and can exceed the quality of nearly any hand-painted anime for obvious reasons.

The 2009 animated movie is becoming...available (I suppose that is the word) with subtitles. I don't know the exact source, but I don't imagine it would be too hard to find.

Oh the glory that is rapid fire Wave Motion Gun usage.

Gotta love the double-barrel wave motion gun on the Andromeda.

Now imagine the Yamato's Wave Motion Gun's firing cylinder as a six shooter.

Yeah...it is like that now. Six shots held from a single charge up. After that they can be discharged when needed. Five rapidly at multiple targets...no problem. You even got one left over for something else later on. Or (with extreme danger placed on the ship) release all the energy at once in one massive shot.

Now that the Blueray and DVD are out for this Live Action Movie in Japan, how long before a Fansub site picks it up and subs it for us non-Nihongo speaking fans?
