Imperial Guards

Read the first few chapters written by the writer of HSOTD, Daisuke Sato.

Pretty good, especially...

Spoiler for SPOILER:

The manga IIRC is actually based on a light novel.

I'm not sure I'd class it as light novels, but yes. 9 volumes out so far, written by Satou Daisuke, who's also the writer for High School of the Dead. I have the two first books, but haven't dared touch it yet, since it looks so weird, with loads of maps and strategy illustrations everywhere.

From the way it's done IMO, Sato did this in the gist of a war novel. Probably so since the theme's based on the early 20th century prior to the rise of the Japanese Empire.
