The second episode made me feel like I was watching a Studio 4C work, both in art style and atmosphere, when in fact it's still Gainax and I applaud them for the amount of effort they put into it.. Then I realize that Osamu Kobayashi has done some work for 4C. Blog post to follow later

This.

Having said that 2nd part of episode 5 was better than the entire series so far

Well, I liked the second part more, but I must say that it was a bad idea to eat while watching this.

I never thought that I'd ever post on this thread.

But the second half of ep5 makes me wonder if they actually critizing their own life and culture.....

It feels a little bit too real and they definitely poking it realy hard. I wonder about the reaction of 2ch..... Wether they rage hard or claim it as boring because it tickle their real life....

well i'm just lost for words to say on eps.5

1st half
lost of nose picking
kyon is in it as well
nose picking "do it"
lots of nose bleed especially the "censored" bar on panty
hey even the moon sneeze

as for the 2nd half

another city but different life-style & characters designs
typical regular day
note to everyone never drink too many glass of beer
& yet get a autograph of panty & stocking to the daughter

overall really like i said i'm lost of words to say on it but really WTF will happen next?

That's certainly what I got out of it.

Leaving the wild vibrant colorful world of Daten City (Amerika) and looking just down the road (to the west) at life in Little Tokyo.

Here everything is bland and colorless. People are locked into depressing and pointless routines they can't rise above. They worry about insignificant issues and work themselves to death vainly trying to keep their heads above water. Even the women are whiny and powerless creatures when compare to the Daten City girls.

I too would be interested in 2ch opinion.

I doubt many of the posters of 2ch actually live in the real world . . .

I have to say, I got really excited when the transformation music kicked in. I wasn't expecting it at all, and then I got sad that we'll be waiting until December for the music to come out. Oh well, another week down!

Meh. The first half to me seemed to be another case of trying too hard.

The artstyle switch was interesting but that's it. I also noticed that the colors on Panty and Stocking in the second half seemed washed out. I would have liked it if they had pushed the contrasting artstyles more but whatever.

1-st part wasn't that interesting to me, and kinda gross (and no, the previous stuf wasn't so gross to me) .. but the moon reminded me of Sun/Moon from Soul Eater a bit

second was awesome, just hypnotizing to watch

PSG & Gainax, I salute you .. without this, to me, fall-2010 season would be practically crap

what other anime have the same style as 2-nd part ?

I almost thought that the animation dropped during the first half...but the second half is just...
I felt like contemplating my life as a failure human being in that second half ;_;

First half wasn't that bad compared to some of the other stuff they've shown. Boogers and nose-picking is used a lot in western cartoons.

Second half was just completely unorthodox for this show, it didn't focus on Panty & Stocking at all and rather the stress this man was piling up until it became so great that it took a physical form as a giant vomit ghost.

Though regardless of that, put this down as the first episode where both halves didn't utterly disgust me.

Umm... Did you watch the same episode I did? The only way they could have done that is if they had had more interaction, and that would have felt forced within the context of the episode. This was obviously building to a "main character cameo" for P&S. And during the time where both styles were onscreen, they were so starkly different as to evoke a live-action/animation feel. They really couldn't have pushed the contrast any more.

Go back and watch the whole sequence in the first half where Stocking depants Panty. The style is a matter of taste as always, but you can't discount the fluidity and the deceptive level of detail (slow it down and focus on the panties/gun over the course of the sequence). It's scenes like that where you can really see the TTGL pedigree in the animation team.

I actually did do this the second time I watched it, and I agree, but I'd like to add something more; the fluidity of everything is not in the sense that it is smooth transaction, but rather that all the movements are "packed." There's one point where Panty swings on the blimp's vines and takes out 10 or so enemies in a single motion. More impressive is when Stocking cuts open her pants, flies in the air, transforms her gun (rainbow BG included), poses, and lines up a shot, all in one stroke. It's chaotic for some, but it makes the action way more dynamic.

Same thing for detail; the whole aesthetic may be "simple," but every scene has so many details to them, it really becomes a world of its own.

One more thing for now is, Enemy Design is holding up strong. Can't say much for Vomit monster, since it's too much like Poopface, but the Boogeyr monster was pretty dang sweet.

first half reminded me of an analogy comparing sex to nose picking.....

but omg 2nd is unexpectedly awesome. The clash of the two atmospheres just makes it even more spectacular. We have gotten so used to the extravagant heroics of the pair that it's nice to see the world from another perspective.

Yea they could have. They could have had locals from Daten City walk around or even environmental conflicts. I understand why they did it the way they did but again I would have preferred a stronger contrast.

Gainax is trolling fans since the 80's.... well.... what can i say... Gainax >>>> the world.

This is Gainax's counterattack on the actual trends of anime... If KyoAni goes Moe with K-on, Gainax will answer with this kind of art... because what we saw in the 2nd half is a piece of art.

You can only find that in movies, not even OVAs but movies... i'm thinking in Otomo's work, perhaps Kon's

This.

Anyway, I thought the episode was pretty neat. The beginning of the second half was so realistic (in terms of story content) that it was almost scary/creepy, but then when Panty & Stocking came in, the series eased back into its familiar ol' silly self. It's nice to see Gainax trying to keep things fresh.

The first half was kinda eh. I thought the whole thing with relating nose picking to sex was kinda amusing; I chuckled every once in a while. And some parts of the battle scene were actually pretty cool aesthetically. The rest is kind of a toss-away.

That's one of the reasons I love this series, is because I have a real love for that deceptive level of detail. You can have all the beautiful, flashy design in the world, but if it doesn't have character, it's all worthless. That's one of the reasons why I'm so enamored of KamiNomi (especially the manga), because it also has a (certainly more Eastern) deceptive simplicity to its design, as well as Negima (manga) and Haruhi, where the visuals certainly draw, but the richness of the world is what keeps me coming back...

Perhaps my eyes wronged me, but I don't really like the color that they used for the first half. As for the fluidity..well, it's one of the main reasons why I like Gainax animation, though I'm not that perceptive enough to judge it.

Probably because I watched the wrong sub or something that I felt as if the animation was dropped compared to before.
