This is quite funny, but very Japanese. I'm surprised CR even picked it up.

With that said... what is with the steps in the beginning of episode two? Was it some kind of game where they had to say as many syllables related to one each other in a row to take a step?

I usually get turned off when a series bases it's humor on japanese concepts because I'm not too aquainted with specific concepts, word play, etc.

This series has balance though, unlike some series like that. For example, you don't need to know about japanese culture to get a kick out of the random Hakase/Nano segments. Nor the rock paper scisors and jump rope segments. So there's things for me to enjoy, even if the niche jokes fly over my head.

I agree, but you never know.

For me, Lucky Star didn't look so great two episodes in, it's what came after that that made it great. So anything can happen.

The only time that I found myself laughing in episode 2 was when Yūko Aioi fell on her face during the jump rope and got whipped in the face.

I would still say Minami-ke 1st season was the best light comedy. The sibling bickering between Kana and Chiaki was what made the show.

EDIT: And Hosaka.

Btw what's the code to make thumbnail pics again? Tried searching the forum but can't find >.<
I *own* editions of Azumanga Daioh, Paniponidash, Lucky*Star... so yeah I'm a bit familiar with the genre. I also have the original and updated japanese versions of Azu Da. I'm still judging whether this series has enough uniqueness from other similar comedic works to warrant watching. Still a few episodes to decide.

Took Lucky Star four or five episodes to find its stride. Azumanga took two (Also sold "Osaka" as able to carry the show all by herself in that episode). Here we may find a point were something similar happens. Pani Poni Dash just got weirder and weirder as it went on.

Oh dear... the sarcasm.

Perhaps random and absurdist humor wears off after the first three or so iterations; you may merely be "immune" to the craziness. There are only so many times one can dramatize a scene until the viewer finds it repetitive. In this episode, I found the notebook chase to be very redundant of the wiener catching skit in the previous episode. The overexaggerated motions and facial expressions did run a little stale for me.

I do enjoy the interactions between the Professor and Nano; those skits avoid using over-the-top humor, instead opting for more creative and strange jokes. A robot used as storage for cakes makes little sense, and even less when the Professor has a refrigerator in her house. Even then, I find the jokes to be only slightly humorous. A chuckle, perhaps, but no outbursts of laughter. Perhaps Nichijou was created not to be the funniest anime ever, but rather the strangest anime ever. This the strangest stuff I've seen in quite some time.

^^ I don't know about the strangest, Panty & Stocking has it beat in terms of sheer craziness and I don't think the series will ever reach that series' level of insanity.

Still, I think the show and the manga are relying on its bizarre elements to set itself apart from other slice of life comedies.

Is it odd that I thought that Mio's older sister sounded like Yuko Goto's Kate from Sketchbook?

I was wondering about that one...the english translators didn't catch the pun, but I figured there had to be one there. (they left it as "bear")

So did KyoAni hire someone from SEA recently, or is one of their writers practising his/her 2nd Language lessons in a creative manner?

Natch.

Mio's sis is great, the professor and robot tandem is very funny, that school chasing scene is amazing, Sasahara is a jerk but likable

hope they can keep this up in every eps

Holy freaking crap gecd that makes perfect sense! That scene was bugging me for a while but now... It blows my mind! How did these guys expect people to get this joke. Heck I'm a Malaysian and it never even crossed my mind, let alone a Japanese.

The art is intriguing... this may be the closest I get to seeing Yotsuba& animated.
