I hope we get to that point so we can actually see it translated but I'm amazed by that french website for grabbing that.

The mistake you're making is assuming the Mother isn't already considered by the show creators to be a dignified and wholesome character in her own way (though not perfect).

Hana-Maso Iroha I felt a little disturbed when I thought I was watching that cruel scene again but then the music started and I lost it.

Finally got to watch the first episode and catch up on this thread (gah, of all the weeks to have four mid-semester tests...). All I can say is thank you, Okada-sensei; thank you, PA Works: one episode in, this show is exactly what I was hoping for.

Ohana had me cheering for her right from her opening "I'm not really your child" speech. I find her combination of reflectiveness, uncertainty and youthful optimism utterly likable, and also quite believable. She's one of the rare female anime characters who passes the If I Was A Girl Test: I'm going out on a limb here (not actually being a girl and all), but if I was a girl I think I could watch this show and say to myself "yeah, she's awesome, I want to be her". The little touch that cemented it for me was when Kō said his farewell and Ohana fell down the slide: instead of landing in a moerific heap, she came down still standing on her feet. I hope that's symbolic of how she's going to grow throughout the story.

Reading the posts here I see Sui (Ohana's grandmother boss) gets a lot of flack for slapping her staff around. While I don't agree with her approach, taking her age into account I can sort of see things from her perspective: I think her line "it would be worse if I slapped a customer, which is what you effectively did" sums things up. She may not seem that likable at the moment, but she does come across as a solidly drawn and internally consistent character.

Looking at Kaoru Chujo's character / seiyū list I'm also struck by the age range of the characters. This bodes well for the story, and it makes the TV drama comparisons even more apt.

Now, off to set the alarm for 5:30 so I can catch episode 2 before I leave for class in the morning.

A rather great start to a promising slice-of-life anime. Some quote and response...

Spoiler for What's the girl's name again? I completely forgot.:

Regarding the grandma from hell... I think she will have changed her philosophy by the end of this anime. I fully support her actions this episode, because they rile up the viewers. She is framed as the "enemy" whom all the inn workers must obey, but secretly seethe at deep inside. The viewers would like to believe there is a better way to discipline your workers; if you think so, at least consider the strong, tight-knit bonds formed from blood and tears. Hitting someone creates a deeper level of communication than everyday banter.

There are cases where the abusive parent cares little about their child... and then, there are cases when the seemingly abusive parent really cares. This grandma hit her workers because she wants her inn to be of the highest quality; mistakes must not be repeated. But there's more - her workers are like her family. Grandma wants them to succeed, just as much as she wants the inn to succeed. The pain they feel now will only benefit their future selves, as they eventually leave the inn as strong and confident women.

Ultimately, Hanasaku Iroha is about growing up. The main character had an easy, carefree life; she had little resolve for her future and was oblivious to the people (her best friend) around her. Through her arduous job at the inn, Ohana will learn some of life's most important lessons. For those of who you rage at the grandma from hell, I have a feeling she will change as well.

Okay, enough of me sounding like a motivational speaker. This anime is shaping to be one epic coming-of-age story. I should be more vary of, as Sankaku Complex calls it, "Japanese lunchtime dramas." Unfortunately, Hanairo has my heartstrings in it's tugging, wrenching fingers. And it's playing some melody.

The sound of the slapping was disturbing, but the protagonist's expression after getting slapped was hilarious.
And the end, with Minch going "The unbelievable one is you..."

The ol' lady is so popular, isn't she? Just look at how many posts are on her!
Number one in popularity vote, most certainly! (...)

If Ohana is so good at cooking, why isn't she the kitchen hand? After all these years, you'd think Grandma would put people in places where they're good at... lol

That said, Grandma seems like she knows more about her customers than she lets on; she just can't say it right in front of their faces because it isn't the proper thing in service to do.

And a wee bit disturbed at the drive scene... Ohana, don't look at Tohru. He's all Minko's lols.

Dunno, but I like Omigawa's tsun voice (IMO Jun > Maka > Hotori), and that's partly why currently Minko is my fave character.

She probably will end up in the kitchen eventually, though at the moment Ohana needs to learn more about the inn and how it works.

The art style is very similar. Alas, alchemy is probably banned at the inn... for safety reasons.
