SPECTRE [James Bond - November 2015]

As you probably saw since Friday, the first teaser of the upcoming James Bond movie is already out:

After 3 movies with Daniel Craig as 007, we are not quite done digging into James' past just yet. Here is what the synopsis on IMDB says:
A cryptic message from Bond's past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.
In the cast, Daniel Craig returns as James Bond. Other cast members include Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux, Monica Belucci, Andrew Scott, Dave Bautista, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Rory Kinnear and Jesper Christensen (a.k.a. Mr White). Sam Mendes returns as the director along with almost the entire crew behind Skyfall.

Having watched all Bond movies from Dr. No up to Skyfall, I'm really excited to see how they could adapt the SPECTRE organization into the modern reality. If I caught the tone of voice right, the man in the shadows is portrayed by Christoph Waltz under the name of Franz Oberhauser. It will be interesting to see how he is linked to James' past.

I'm really quite excited about this. Been waiting for SPECTRE to return for years. Blofeld is the Moriarty to Bond's Sherlock so hopefully they keep them around for a few movies, but they probably won't.

I agree. If Franz Oberhauser is the new man codenamed Number 1, I hope they will keep him around for a long time since my favorite stretch (not just single movies, I mean a succession) of Bond films was when Bond fought against a succession of plots involving SPECTRE during the Sean Connery years.

Christoph Waltz was meant to be a Bond Villain.

That's some "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" theme going on there.

Anyone wants to give his/her impressions on this?

Anyway, I saw the movie yesterday. Once again, Sam Mendes did a superb effort (although it didn't match Skyfall). The big task was to tie the loose ends from the previous 3 movies leading up to this. If Daniel Craig wants to retire from his time as 007, I think he would have every understandable right to. The movie itself could be an ending to the Daniel Craig arc.

Spoiler for SPECTRE's Number 1:

Thought it was good. Train fights was especially well done.
Liked Skyfall better, though.

I haven't watched the movie yet, but this strikes me as a little unbelievable. Kid felt neglected and decided to start an international crime organization?

I guess his motives for starting the international crime organization are unknown. However, the fact that Bond became a 00 agent and stood in the way makes things become more personal for sure.

Yeah, that seems to be how things turned out . At the very least he felt neglected...committed murder...reinvented himself and along the way a crime organization sprang up.

While he may have had other reasons for creating Spectre his issue with Bond is basically "Daddy liked you better so I hate you!"

Considering how old he and Bond are at this point....that's a remarkable grudge to hold onto .

Spoiler:

I had fun with the movie, but looking back at it, it does seem underwhelming compared to some of the other recent Bond flicks.

Somehow though, I liked it a bit more than Skyfall. Andrew Scott is deliciously eating up his role as always (although not to the mad level of Moriarty).

Well, the plot is very similar, at least up to a point. The movie did not go without its slight faults, though:

1. Bond knocked four times on the train. James Bond ALWAYS knocks thrice.
2. I felt he got a bit too emotional - it's good that the casual banter in the evil den is back, but things got personal.
3. And #2 is why I'm not so overjoyed with this movie: it takes away so much of the mystery behind SPECTRE, a grand organization with a leader!
4. ...who reeks of a retcon.
5. I didn't like the bond girl in this movie, I can't put my finger on it, but something was just not right.
Spoiler for plot points:

P.S: Props to Q, he played his part very well.

Given the lacklustre reviews for Spectre I wasn't expecting to be all the impressed, but I was. I found it way better than the massively overrated Skyfall (I may not agree with every single one of its criticisms, but the Honest Trailer does a pretty good job of skewering Skyfall). Though it is a bit on the long side.

Interestingly, while the action in Spectre was pretty over the top, I didn't find it to be excessive like the action in some other, more highly rated blockbusters like Star Trek: Into Darkness and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
