GHDPro: As long as you're not concerned with browsers that don't do CSS, why don't you try this trick:

- Black text on black background
- when you hover your mouse over the text, it turns white ( .spoiler:hover { color: white } )

This would solve the problem of the earlier spoiler tag, while not being too annoying. Oh, also, I think the "quote"-like indentation is annoying and the text should be inline, but that's just me.

The spoiler tags are good for pictures. It allows you to selectively choose whether or not you wanna view the image. Which is probably a great feature for anyone on dial up, or if it's a page with alot of images that mess with the formating of the forum.

Are you sure pictures aren't loaded with the page and only displayed when you hit the button? I think they are, but I didn't bother to check the code.

But another thing the new spoiler system is good for is that they hide links also. They used to show on the old spoilers and sometimes spoiled worse than the hidden text.

Er yes, as JAF already indicated, the whole page IS loaded, including images. The new
spoiler tag just uses a CSS trick to turn of the displaying of these elements (temporary).

ashibaka: afaik, that won't work, the ":hover" pseudo-class only works on "a" tags (links).

Well, it atleast makes the page look cleaner as you don't endup with giant images that fill screw up the screen.

Spoiler for test:

Oh, you're right, but you can do the same with Javascript. Here's an example: http://osaka.is.dreaming.org/spoiler.html

Actually, you CAN do that. All you need is an 'a' element with a 'span' inside of it containing the text. If you want to see an example of it in action, the menu on my webpage uses it. Here's the CSS:

Code:
div.rollover a
{
	color: #FEFEFE;
	font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif;
	font-size: 13px;
	text-decoration: none;
	margin-left: 5px;
}
div.rollover a:hover
{
	color: #EEEEEE;
	border-right: 2px double white;
	border-left: 2px double white;
	margin-left: -2px;
	padding: 0 5 0 5;
}
div.rollover a span
{
	display: none;
}
div.rollover a:hover span
{
	display: block;
   	position: absolute;
	top: 340px;
	left: 0;
	width: 110px;
   	padding: 5px;
        margin: 10px;
        z-index: 100;
  	color: FFFFFF;
	text-decoration: none;
  	font-size: 10px;
	font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;
	font-weight: bold;
	text-align: center;
}
All you would need to do would be to change the position: absolute; in the span style to position: relative and use margins to determine its position.

Alright, I made a page pretty quickly that demonstrates what I was talking about.

http://www.boneyjellyfish.com/spoiler.htm

There's only one flaw in the code: the link MUST point to somewhere. You can't just have an 'a' tag without the 'href' part (which has its own uses).

I will have to stress against using display: block; when defining the class for the 'a' tag unless you are going to make all spoiler text a defined pixel width.

err... that would be good except that you could be accidentally spoiled if it was an image (or something else that you could take in in one eyeful)

*grumble*

Well okay Mr. Partypooper, how does this look? Click on the spoiler to make the text appear. It should work perfectly fine in IE5 + 6, but you'll have to hold down a click and take your mouse off the text in order to get it to stay in Firefox (and maybe Opera too). Because of that little quirk in the browsers, it may not be the best solution for a spoiler tag (unless people running Firefox can handle the hassle)

Also, hobobaggins, there is no javascript involved in anything that I'm doing.

well, i didn't spoil what the goat looks like, such things would be cruel to people that want to be suprised when they finally see a goat!!!

and the way you edited my quote makes it look like a dirty word is there, although i originally did use that picture of a goat to freak out some guy who said he couldn't find pr0n small enough to be an avatar.

I've been having a problem. When using spoiler tags, after previewing the post, it will not allow me to submit the message.

I ran into this problem once, but figured that it was some weird quirk. I got around it by not using Preview. I hope that GHDPro will fix it quickly now that we're pointing it out to him.

(Three of us pointing this out is sufficent, there is no reason for anyone else to "me too" it.)

Spoiler:

Bug fixed! The cause of these problems was the < form > tags I had put in the spoiler tag
HTML code. I put them in there because based on experience I thought Netscape would
otherwise not show the button (as it's an < input > tag). But at least in all the browsers
I've tried (IE 6, Mozilla Firebird 0.6, Opera 7.2 and Safari 1.2), removing the < form > HTML tags
has no bad effect at all, while fixing the preview problems.
