Masterpieces

mas·ter·piece [mas-ter-pees, mah-ster-]
–noun
1.
a person's greatest piece of work, as in an art.
2.
anything done with masterly skill: a masterpiece of improvisation.
3.
a consummate example of skill or excellence of any kind: The chef's cake was a masterpiece.
4.
a piece made by a person aspiring to the rank of master in a guild or other craft organization as a proof of competence.

You may call this a vague request, but the term masterpiece alone should filter about 98% of the anime out there. Something amazing, extraordinary, out of this world. Something that you have watched and wanted to share with the world. I want more than just something to watch, I want an experience. I want a masterpiece.

If I list say Death Note as something I have watched, surely someone is going to say "Well if you liked Death Note, then Code Geass" I'm not trying to find anything similar nor am I looking for any specific genre. In fact, I am not even looking for anything specific. Just list any anime that comes to mind that you find is amazing. Something you would term a masterpiece. I asked for something you would want to share with the world, not something you would want to share with me.
Edit 2: Regarding the lack of specifications:

I don't care what genre. Just tell me an anime that you loved and I'll watch it. I honestly don't see why the same question needs to be asked over and over again.

Yeah you'd think that wouldn't you... The problem is that what people consider a masterpiece can still vary considerably so simply requesting a masterpiece isn't going to filter much at all.

It would be much easier you gave us a list of what you've seen and what you consider a masterpiece. For now though, I would recommend Kara no Kyoukai and 5 Centimeters Per Second.

Serei no Moribito - A fantasy with an immersive atmosphere.
Summer War - Crazy and upbeat family fun.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - Sweet romance

Toradora! - Silly and sweet romcom.
Whisper of the Heart - Very touching childhood romance

Byousoku 5 Centimeter
The girl who leapt through time
Aria: The Origination

but everything is subjective. and since some people enjoy different types of stories, a masterpiece for me may not be for you.

I give second to those three, all were amazing.

And I'd add:
Juuni Kokuki [The Twelve Kingdoms] - A fantasy series with possibly the great character development throughout a story ever.

Also I'd say Clannad/After Story, but judging by your avatar/sig I think you've already seen it .

Aren't there enough best of lists already? Calling it a "masterpiece" will generally lead to the same results...

This thread will be buried and forgotten in a few weeks. It's best to inquire about what you are looking for personally.

That's not to say this forum couldn't benefit from a few sticky topics...

Wow, no mention of Monster? I can't believe that's not at or near the top of anyone's list of "masterpieces."

I'd probably put Dennou Coil in this list as well for its excellence in story, animation, music, and seiyuu performances.

Seirei no Moribito - on balance, the best ever.
Cross Game - just an amazing character study that will reward your patience.
5 Centimeters per Second - it will break your heart, both with its story and the most beautiful visuals in the history of anime.
FLCL - the coolest anime with the best soundtrack ever.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - no explanation necessary.

What a masterpiece is to someone might be merely good or medicore to another. However, for the least biased, objective approach your best is search for "Top Animes" on various anime websites, such as this:

Top 50 Anime on AnimeNewsNetwork

It gives an indication of the majority of people considered to be good. Even then I wouldn't put much weight on it. Each person has a preference of genres, so I suggest going according to that. Look at the tags and synopsis of the "top" animes and decide from there.

I'm pretty sure the OP would have done that if they wanted to. However, you had read what the OP said, you would have found out that they wanted a more personal lists of masterpieces. In other words, what you yourself found to be a masterpiece, not what has scored highest on ANN.

TBH would help if a genre was specified. Even if its just the general but all important : Romance vs Action vs Comedy. Would really help people giving you suggestions. People usually stick to one of these categories as their favorite and wont rate other types as masterpieces because they just do not enjoy them nearly as much. Obviously the more specific you get (supernatural, fantasy, school life, slice of life, etc) the more likely someone will suggest something that you will also appreciate as a master piece of the genre.
