The anime came first. Then the merchandising.

The manga of the series was later produced with a different artist. He is a follower of Anzai's Eva but decided to go about it differently (his own adaptations).

Girlfriend of Steel is another Eva manga but based on an alternate universe,

Let me clarify this once and for all:

Neon Genesis Evangelion was a GAINAX project featuring director Anno Hideaki (who the heck is Anzai?!) and character designer Sadamoto Yoshiyuki.

Neon Genesis Evangelion started its "serialization" on Kadokawa's February 1995 issue of Shonen Ace. The manga is done by Sadamoto Yoshiyuki.

Neon Genesis Evangelion started airing on TV Tokyo from October 4, 1995. This is directed by Anno Hideaki, with character designs by Sadamoto Yoshiyuki.

Why? You get more profits and royalties that way if both the anime and manga are done by the same company. Sadamoto Yoshiyuki also will get more royalites by doing the manga and the character designer for both the manga and the anime. And even you get a slightly higher percentage of royalites paid out by the publisher if the manga was released before the anime rather than vice-versa.

The manga version of Neon Genesis Evangelion is serialized very seldomly on Shonen Ace though. It has been over nine years since it was first published but it has not been finished yet.

My mistake. I mix up mangaka names at times...
