Pretty good first episode.
It's surprisingly good actually coming from the trainwreck that was Index III so it feels weird seeing Toaru looking good again. They added some filler to reintroduce some characters which were a fine choice since it's been like 6-7 years now since last season. I am pretty hyped overall. Railgun has always been a good money maker for JC staff lets hope they deliver this time. |

For those wondering, Kuroko's hospital stay is a result of a fight she had with another teleporter back in Index II. Just to give you some idea of where we stand on the timeline.
Anyway, it's good to see the whole crew again. Aside from our main four, there's also Kongo and her followers, and Shoukohou and hers (it never ceases to bother me at how readily she mind-controls these girls who would quite happily stick with her even if she didn't). We get a glimpse at the Misaka Imoutos (how does hivemind rock-paper-scissors even work?), and we also we get quick glimpses of the various level fives in the city, including an introduction to Gunha: a nutjob with undefinable powers who charges around trying to carry out his own (sometimes ill-conceived) notion of justice. Looks like this city-wide sports festival is going to be full of... interesting times, shall we say.

Glad Railgun is back, since it's generally more enjoyable to me than Index. Though this sure was an Episode 1 episode. Bit better than usual, as they at least managed to put some plot into it, but still a bit repetitive for my tastes.
They can turn it off, and have done so multiple times throughout the series. |

This was an infinitely better experience than watching Index III's first episode, an experience which slowly sucked the soul out of me.
Complain about Cloverfield all you want, Nagai knows how to direct a good anime.

It's a good thing that it seems JC Staff is putting all their effort on this anime (instead of the other two) and it is also good to see the old cast again, but man, when you see those other characters, you can't help but remember Index Season 3.
And if Accelerator is appearing, is he still going to do that conceited "Ohhh, I'm so beaaaad~~~" thing? Please no. That was probably the most cringey thing the author has ever thought up in this series (which says a lot). Pretty impressive that the main fours' voices haven't really changed considering how long ago Railgun season 2 is. But I think some of the other characters' voices have changed a bit... Also,hi, Sorcerous Stabber Orphen protagonist. Oh, and I think they are still using the new SE guy that started working on the series from Index S3. Are we still going to get that jet plane canceling?

It was nice to see the Railgun girls all back together again like this. It's been a while, so a bit of a refresher episode felt reasonable for the premiere. It's just nice to be able to watch Railgun again .
Thank you Saten for conveniently letting us know what kind of underwear Uiharu was wearing after flipping her skirt . It was cool seeing the other Level-5's as that group tried to figure out who the leads for the festival would be. Kakine's and Accelerator's reactions were pretty amusing, and Mugino's had the added benefit of getting to see all the ITEM Girls in swimsuits again. Plus, Frenda! It was nice to see Frenda again, including a prominent shot of her swimsuit clad booty . And I guess I have to thank Index III for letting me recognize Kakine, as well as his crew. I immediately went "oh hey, it's those guys" . Misaki is basically female Purple Man with a remote. Watching her controlling all those girls en masse and with such ease was really creepy. Thank goodness Misaka is immune . We finally meet one of the other Level-5's, Gunha, and he seems set to be a powerhouse with a strong sense of justice and conviction, although he leaves a lot of collateral damage in his wake . Poor Misaka. She seemed open to doing it, but then they decided she causes too much trouble . Yeah, to be honest, with their personalities even I'd be worried about how Daihasei is going to turn out with those two Level-5's . I somehow had a feeling Kuroko's book was pictures of Mikoto, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised they were all lewds. Whatever perks her up best . The new Opening is definitely a Railgun Opening, with FripSide delivering an upbeat, catchy, song with some nice visuals to go along with it. Looks like the main plot will involve Misaki's background, and some kind of liquid villain. And Touma will be thrust into things again .

Nice looking first episode here. Guess this is what happens when people take care with what they're doing.
Really have to wonder why those guys even bothered contacting Accel, Teitoku and Mugino to begin with. Surely someone could have told them that was a waste of time.

Who thought it was a good idea to release the 3 new shows in reverse temporal order?
I was rather impressed at the first episode. They did a good job getting back into the groove of things even after the long break. Last edited by Magewolf; 2020-01-10 at 23:31. |

Although to be honest it didn't seem like they were working from top-level intel on what the Level-5's are like when they set out to do this, just assuming that their reps could get them to go along with this. Quote:

Well, I guess this could have potentially been Kakine's debut, but I feel like from an anime-only perspective it's more meaningful having seen these guys in Index III, just like ITEM being in Railgun S made what happened to them more poignant in Index III .

At first, I thought they were a bit rush as normally first Railgun would be a filter episode
But they did well to expand short recruit chapter from manga to full episode with filters And I thought they gonna change level 5's representatives as in manga school director just immediately decline offer for Misaka But really, what those colorful things when they introduce level 5s It feel out of place even in Railgun series And I think they will give Saten and Uiharu more role in anime as they just put little more plot for Uiharu Sadly, they gonna put Russia presentation arc and Liberal Art city arc as just background It's not like they were in original manga, but it still part of Railgun. I hope they could make both arcs into anime

What I like about Railguns was they take their moment,
I remember when watching Railgun S1 Episode 2 merely about a slice of life comedy with character development explaining Who's Mikoto (childish), Kuroko (pervert) with Uiharu and Saten as their new friend. and that it! with no fight, no villains, no need to be a high budget episode. it's Funs to see their banters, and people love it Unlike in Index SIII Anime, Nagai as Railgun director only need to concentrate on two major arc event (Daihasei Railgun pov and Dream Ranker arc) Who mainly focusing on Tokiwadai School heroine (simple as the good guys) versus "outsider of them" / The Dark Side of Academy City (aka as the bad guys) packed into 25 Episodes, put little a bit filler plus fanservice and viola as simple as is. Plus Nagai no need to worry much because Railgun source material was a manga (those was easier to visualize into anime rather than LN) As long they maintain the quality = same level like in the Railgun S 2013 I guess now in 2020 technology, High-Quality Anime easier to produce, plus I heard the whole team of Railgun are back (+ bonus fripSide band) |

That was a very nice start and a much needed palate cleaner after the mediocre Accelerator and outright disastrous Index III.
It's difficult to overstate how much I already dislike Misaki. Sociopathic telepaths with no moral compunctions are always a hot button issue with me. And her apparently preparing to go after the sisters to hurt Biri-Biri? Grrrrr.

I’ll be honest......
It’s awkward watching Mugino and Frenda antics knowing what happens “later” in Index 3, which a lot of anime-only watchers should know too............
