Active Air Mine is really the first time I have been wowed by the presentation of magic in Mahouka thus far. Hopefully they can keep this up for the other events, even though I'm expecting they will have to cut a lot more events in the coming episodes. Time to see who's up on the chopping board.
And one more thing.. Madhouse: Abandon all hope, ye who enter. Mayumi fans:

Yey Shizuku
I really don't know what to think of the anime up to this point. Character development is barely there 12 episodes in while the in-depth magic explanations are so god-awful boring I'm starting to fall asleep watching it. Maybe Mahouka is just terrible source material for an anime adaptation or Madhouse is doing a god-awful job adapting it. Then again they are also doing NGNL and they've done a spectacular job so far... Oh well on to the next episode of TATSUYA IS SO AWESOME KYAAAAA~ Lack of yandere brocon Miyuki makes things even more dismal. |

if the people doing NGNL did mahouka it might of been a good anime but the people doing this just don't care at all. |

For some reason, I wonder if the No-Head Dragon are the ones responsible for making a sudden change of the water current that puts Mari and the other competitor out of contention? Anyways, can't wait for the next episode. Despite having a good soundtrack and animation production, I feel Madhouse are overhyping Mahouka too much compared to NoGeNoRa. |

I think they are by far the most likely candidates. Otherwise it would make no sense to introduce them and even have the army on surveillance. As for their objective, that's another questions, seeing how they specifically targeted Mari (or First High generally with that bus incident) and not the field as a whole.

Third High is in cahoots with No Head Dragon. Perhaps, they even paid No Head Dragon to sabotage the competition. |

Question is, what has Third High to gain in relation to the risks? If they are blown up their careers are basically ending in addition to repercussions for their families which are shown to be important in the Mahouka world. The maximum I can imagine is select members of Third High being used by the criminals similarly to how Mibu etc. were used in the last arc. I highly doubt that any of the competitors of Third High are actively working to sabotage the event, for that they have far too much to lose.

Like, wanting to promote Third High so next years the most skilled students will enroll there? p.s. I just realized. May be the reason why First High gets the most skilled young mages is because it's located in Tokyo(the capital/center of power)?

First high is likely the oldest of the schools so it likely gets it's prestige from that and as you said it is in the capital

Kind of weird that they skipped why Tatsuya invited Honoka as well about the video.
Spoiler for Honoka:
The animation for the active air mine was pretty good. I guess they don't want TOO much Tatsuya worshiping Spoiler for Mari:

Being a beneficiary doesn't equate to clear evidence that they are the culprits. As I said before, the rewards of such a sabotage pale in relation to the risks. We are not talking about some desperate losers here. Guys like Ichijou Masaki are apparently from reputable families themselves. They would be incredibly stupid to risk the reputation of the school and their whole clan for a school competition. If they indeed are that stupid, well, then it's a pretty poor setup by the author.

I know this is based off of novels, but there was WAAAAAAAAAAY too much pointless exposition in this episode. They spent almost half the episode engaging in prolonged exposition about the water incident. Then the rest of the episode was like "NOBODY'S ATTACKNG US IN THE PRELIMS". Gee, ya think?

First half felt awfully rushed, second part had a nice pace.
I find it hilarious that Tatsuya invited Mikihiko and Mizuki to help analysing the video and discussing potential third party intervention, but only asks Mikihiko about his expertise. Mizuki was simply standing around with no line or purpose, if Tatsuya didn't call her said that he knew of one more person who might be of assistance and will contact her later, the interaction between those present in the room wouldn't have changed at all.

You know, in any other show I would think that last scene with Shizuku would be a death loss flag, what with all the "It's perfectly adjusted to me" "keep doing what you've been doing and you'll win just fine" "I'll definitely win" stuff, but I'm not sure this series knows enough about drama and proper story construction for it to be an issue.
