Although the significance of the sequence right at the beginning is impressive, I'm also impressed by the effort they're putting in to keep up the style; I had focused on studying preform orthography for some time, so just seeing it in the trailer was enough to sell me, but having it all over and with a nice eye to detail (lots of itaiji, old okurigana, and of course keeping proper orthography) is great. |

Text flashes disorient the viewer, putting them into a trance-like state of mind more appropriate for enjoying the show. Atmosphere is important in anime, and Shinbou really excels at it. Though he's used these flashes before, they're usually there for the sake of a punchline. Bakemonogatari's first time he's used them so liberally and creatively.
The colored frames also provide a stream-of-consciousness element to the anime, juxtaposing Araragi's thoughts with his narration and his actions. |
