Part of that is their rather infamous (and highly censored) adaptation of Umineko. It was so bad that the DVD sales were less than 600 copies. As a result, Chiru (the 5th-8th novels) will not see an anime adaptation. It got licensed for a US sub (no dub) last year by Nippon Ichi. The sub removes the censorship in all its gory detail.
On a small side note, the Umineko anime was voted "Worst Anime of 2009" by 2chan. |

No offence, but stop using Red and Blue for Higurashi. It just feels forced. First of all, the definition of Umineko's mystery does not even apply to Higurashi. They are different stories, Umineko's logic does not work with Higurashi sometimes. Dunno it just looks to me me that 'Blue and Red are cool and I will use them on every fiction.' Sorry that I sound like a total jackass lol.

Studio DEEN were criticised a lot for censoring the gore, but in fact, it had nothing to do with them. Instead, it was the TV network that added the censorship. Which is why in all subsequent releases, there is no censorship. There's also no fixing of animation errors though, which is another criticism.

I've always interpreted Higurashi as a hybrid horror/mystery and suspect that the series is more compliant to the rules of the mystery genre than one would think. Depending on which side one takes in how Knox's 2nd is interpreted (existance vs involvement in the crime) Spoiler for spoiler for 8th novel:
