Looks vaguely interesting. Ever since Heartcatch Precure I'm not too quick to disregard kids' anime. I've been big on retro stuff lately, so I'll try this out. Unfortunately, this looks like the type of show to not get subbed at all. Hopefully a fansub group thoughtful enough will highlight this.

Oh wow, talk about a gold voice cast line-up.

I've only seen bits of the original TV series, so i'm all for this.

Not really that true. There's a huge fanbase for retro shows, the most recent ones over the past few years had attention in the subbing department.

This is Go Nagai we're talking about. Expect something closer to PSG than Heartcatch Precure.

For sure this will be for an adult audience. The 2006 remake was definitely 18+ and the original manga had nude shots everywhere.

Well, the anime follows the manga more closely, but I don't know if it will be aired at afternoon, evening or night. So, TV Tokyo can air it.

A good chance of this following the original manga. Go Nagai got a proper remake of his original Mazinger Z manga(and more) with Shin Mazinger last year - this could be a similar thing.

I guess at night, like all recent go nagai animes.

And I was right. According to the official twitter, the show will air at night and start sometime during April.

Dorororororoooooooooooooooon!

If not my favourite episode from this season so far - because Iroha is taking the cake -, definitely my second favourite. This just has that awesome oldschool 80s aura to it, but with very nice modern day animation standards. Props to Brains Base!

I really liked the trio myself, in particular Enma and Yukiko. The latter is just far too cute and balances out really well with the more extroverted/perverted Enma. That segment where they both had bishounen faces and were pretending to be newlyweds was fantastic, hahaha. Kappaeru is fun as the even-more-comic comedy relief, and I can totally picture him getting the short end of the stick constantly, just like how everyone decided his green face wasn't really needed and he'd act as a bait.

The show has some really strong sense of humour too, and the direction quite helped. The first half had some really different moments that I loved. The "gang introduction" from the boys and Harumi focusing on their faces was hilarious, and the whole school scared Harumi with that awesome tune playing was awesome, haha. Anyone knows the name of that song? And the other oldschool one that was playing on TV? I'm not sure if they're original for this show.

Anyways, in the end, I quite liked. Maybe the music placement was weird at times -- or, more accordingly, trying to fully emulate an 80s show, like when Yukiko entered to save Enma -- but other than that it was hitting all the right notes. If the OP is any indicator, I'm sure we're getting more and more very nice comedy and action put together, all with that unmistakable anime feeling.

I wonder why people think anime started in the 80s.

The original enma-kun is from the early 70s, 1973 to be precise.

Because unfortunately I wasn't born in the 70s and I did not watch a lot of shows from that time. Do note, however, I never said it was from the 80s, just that it felt like an 80s show. It could very well mean that 80s' shows just had a similar atmosphere to the 70s ones. ;)

Incredible first episode. I came for Yukiko-hime and I stayed for Yukiko-hime, Enma, Kapaeru, Harumi, that lazy hat, the comedy, the old school feel, the wonderful animation/art/character design and the music in general including that hot-blooded OP. This is going to be one hell of a series (no pun intended)

The first five minutes was kind of forgettable, but then the Kappa showed up and everything turned into pure gold. I finally lost it when the demon thrusted its iron pole. For a show intended for all ages, there's a lot of perverted humor. Gotta love Japan. Perfect show to turn your brain off and absorb the visual gags. Ayako helps in keeping the energy of the show. I miss her Nodame voice.

You said it... a granny spinning her boobs is scarier than any kind of youkai. I'm gonna have nightmares about this.

Yuki onna are always so hot. Yukiko is definitely no exception (and she doesn't wear panties!). I really like the voice Mamiko uses there. It's a lot more natural than say, her Sawako voice, and therefore a lot more enjoyable.

I hope Harumi will stick around (I liked the self tsukkomi lol). Kawasumi Ayako's performance brought a lot of energy to the show. This episode wouln't have been quite as fun without her. I miss her Nodame voice as well. Gyabo!

I'm not really sure this is intended for all ages...sure, the cast seems pretty young, but I think it aired very late at night, so I think they're not the intended audience. And yeah, the series is definitely too perverted for that, forget the youkai, the sight of the Granny alone will scar them for the rest of their life...

But yeah, this series is my first experience with Go Nagai and so far I'm entertained. Some of the humor is a bit of a miss but they're still pretty hilarious, the characters are fun and the action is pretty well done too. Definitely waiting for the next episode.

I think the song that was playing was Furimukanaide (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6cxaXyxnSE). I don't know much about it, other than it seems to be a pretty old Japanese song. Of note, however, that version isn't/doesn't seem to be the same used in the show. But it was all I could find! ;)

EDIT: Apparently there is another track with that name that was in Evangelion? It doesn't really seem to be the same one, though. The one up there is performed by "Honey Knights" (?) while the Evangelion one is supposedly a cover of "Furimukanaide" by "The Peanuts".

Thanks, I think I figured it out now that I was confusing it with Scarlet Scarf (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8RLaArhjXE&NR=1).

Although now that I think about it, it might have been used in Maison Ikkoku in a similar fashion (ie the TV was playing in the background with this song).

This is a very fun show. I agree with what someone said earlier about how it has that classic 70s/80s anime feel to it while still being modern and flashy. I did some research and looked at a little bit of the past versions of it, and I can say that this remake does Nagai's original justice in capturing the same kind of overall tone.

And strangely, I really like the OP and ED. I dunno why, lol.

I'm late to the game here, but I really loved the first episode. I didn't know much about the property - all it was to me was some kind of first cousin to "GeGeGe no Kitaro". But this is really creative and clever stuff. There's some really edgy comedy that belies the seemingly childish material. I also appreciate the obvious love & care the staff have put into updating the material. It looks fantastic, the music is great, and the timing of the comedy is spot-on.

Brains Base doesn't get the credit they deserve. They do a lot of good stuff, and in a lot of different genres. I agree that this is the second best premiere of the season after Hanasaku Iroha so far.

I didn't really like episode 2 as much as 1, but that's mainly because I didn't enjoy the action nearly as much and there was no awesome oldschool tune montage, like the Furimukanaide one! On the other hand, I guess having as many of these Yukihime moments more than makes up for it. Enma/Yuki antics are still so much fun to watch! Poor Yuki needs to stop going au naturale! :heh:

Oh, and I can't forget Great King Enma voiced by Norio Wakamoto, of course. I cracked up when he handled the tape to Enma and the others. Best joke in this episode for me, hahaha.

Anyways, seems like episode 3 might bring our first real antagonist here? What with Chiko's mark and all. Also, wondering when we're going to find out a bit more about that witch like woman that pops up on the OP. The GESO GESO definitely had her silhouette on his explanation, so I guess she must be related to the whole incident with the demons showing up!

All in all, though, another solid and extremely fun outing from this series. Go Nagai!

While the witch my be one of the bad guys I don't think Chiko-sensei is the opener has her hanging with the Grim Reaper (and thats what her mark looks like) who would be someone who works for/with the great king Enma. She also seemed disturbed when the Squid atacked.

Episode 2 was nowhere near as hectic as the first one, but still was enjoyable overall because it didn't fall into the predictabilty of the monster of the week format. This time the action happened right away and was complemented later with a flashback about the origin of the Youkai Patrol (complete with commentary from the cast :heh:). First 15 minutes of episode 3: Too much focus on a character I don't particularly like (Chiko-sensei) hindered the enjoyment a bit.

Last 7-8 minutes: Just perfect. A bit more and I was going to start spinning in slow motion with sparkles around me. That mini bikini looks simply great on Yukiko-hime

Some great reaction faces this time, plenty of fanservice, action against two youkai, Mazinger Z parody and even Enma and Yukiko-hime showed up new abiities. Pretty much everything was included in the package.

You're right, this isn't really the type of show that appeals to the masses. It's "old", weird and quite a bit vulgar; not the type of anime people are used to watch nowadays. Kaiji has about the same amount of post too. Such is the fate of unorthodox anime.

The fact there isn't much to discuss plays a part too. There's pretty much no plot or character development so far. It's just dumb fun.

People have no sense of humor is my guess.

I've glanced through Sankaku for shits and giggles, since I figure the site administrator loves to post "news" such as this, and the majority in the comment section were pretty much grossed out. One memorable user commented and I'm paraphrasing: "It's an ecchi show, not a comedy, and should therefore supply constant boners at all times, not show this disgusting filth!" Or something like that. I know Sankaku isn't the mecca of anime fandom, but it's pretty laughable regardless. I've seen similar sentiments here too regarding comedies depicting various forms of fanservice, often censored in some way. Maybe it's a cultural thing. Or maybe they're just horny fourteen year-olds. Who knows?

Also, I reckon the slow subs may have something to do with it.

The granny spinning her tits in the first episode was probably enough to scare peole away. And as you said, the artstyle alone is probably a huge turn-off for the majority. Hell, I'm pretty sure the sole fact it's retro is enough for some people to dismiss it.

The content itself was ok in the first episode, but it's progressively getting more and more perverted: tentacle rape, breast/ass inflation, ... Those are the kind of things that disgust a lot of people, even if it's only used for laughs.

Yes, I truly believe that. And I'm talking about western fans of course. I often see people complaining about tentacles, most recently in the To love-ru Darkness thread. It seems to me that it's a pretty niche fetish among westerners. Then again, that might be because it's not really the kind of fetish you'd proudly wave around.

Stuff like Precure and Madoka still look childish but people watch them anyway. If the show looks like Hyouge Mono, people would still not watch it.

It really has to do with one specific artstyle and the 'disgusting' content. Personally, I couldn't care whether people watch it or not, I know I'm enjoying the hell out of it so stuff like popularity shouldn't bother you.

It's not like tentacles is all the series about. The point is that there is a pretty girl that goes around in a mini kimono while not wearing any panties, and has the tendency to end up naked and in every kind of sexual situation. How does that not appeal to people that watch anime?

You can't really compare this to Precure as if it came over it would be relegated as a kid's title complete with edits. The only way it would get in the US.

Madoka has characters using guns, muskets, bombs etc and is not considered a children's title. Faust elevated it to the level of teens. Level of violence in Madoka may get it a TVMA rating here if it makes it here. Shaft involvement automatically made it otaku fodder.

What does that have to do with anything? We were discussing why the show doesn't seem to be getting much attention right now.

US distributors rely on DVD sales so if something doesn't look like it will do well on DVD then it won't get picked up for streaming by the US distributors. Then there's the other streaming sites that may not store it for similar reasons.(There's after all the eyeballs for advertising money.) No reliable streaming usually means a chunk of the US population won't watch it. So less thread contributors.

That's a safe assumption. I say she's either his sister or his cousin.

She's actually a parody character from her own series, Dororon Enpi-Chan, which was a parody of Dororon Enma-Kun that Go Nagai did 10 years ago. From this (http://gonagaifans.deviantart.com/blog/37948434/) page:

In 2000, Dororon Enpi chan (どろろん艶靡ちゃん, the two kanji meaning voluptuously seducing) is a slapstick and almost hardcore erotic comedy parodiying Dororon Enmakun, where the respective counterparts are Enpi, a voluptuous blond young women; Yukiko Hige (Yukiko beard) a middle aged old man with womanish behaviour (the character is in reality one of Go Nagai's Superstars, Hige Gojira (bearded Godzilla) who debuted in Harenchi Gakuen in 1968); Kabako, a female youkai modeled on Kappaeru.

She got her own Tankobon (http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%81%A9%E3%82%8D%E3%82%8D%E3%82%93%E8%89%B6%E9%9 D%A1%E3%81%A1%E3%82%83%E3%82%93-SANWA-COMICS-No-%E6%B0%B8%E4%BA%95/dp/488356102X) too. In short, Kekko Kamen + Dororon Enma-Kun = Dororon Enpi-Chan, with a male, beareded Yuki, and a female Kappa.

So basically they put in a gag character from a near-H gag manga making fun of Dororon Enma-Kun in the Dororon Enma-Kun anime. Crazy stuff, but it fits Go Nagai's style, so...

What is the likelihood of another fansub group subbing this show?

(I don't like GG's subs)

About zero. And why don't you, they are actually good, and actually translate the jokes very well.

GG is a fansub group that likes to troll, that's why.

I actually think their subs are okay, I just don't like the group themselves.

Just caught up with 10 + 11. Seems like an all-around Heaven vs Hell battle is the only proper way to end this.

Special mention for the new loli introduced in episode 11. She is hot. And strong.

Wait so they want to kill 4 billion people? not a big deal that's only 50 years worth.

The story is set in the 70s, there were only 4 billion people back then.

Very chaos... Very unique... Very... lots of things.
Anyways, definitely different from most of the anime this season (and other season) and fun to watch.

Just... really crazy show.

But in a good meaning.

9/10
Character designs were pretty nice (Kimutaka).
Yukiko-hime... (;´Д`)ハァハァ

I'm impressed that the last episode managed to be more WTF than all the episodes before this one.

Loved to see the original VAs coming back for the finale...especially the legendary Masako Nozawa.

I can't think of any words better than "WTF" to sum up the last episode. I enjoyed the series, but I have to say it was a little too chaotic and random even for me at some part.

Now, Enpi-chan spin-off, please!

The whole show is pretty well made of WTF though, so at least they stuck to their guns.

All I can say is that the ending didn't disappoint one bit. Enma finally kissed Yukiko HELL YEAH! :D

Now to wait for those BD versions.

call it what a finale from wacky races, power-ups, used the force, mamiko-mamiko doing herself, ayako-mamiko yuri kiss (YES i finally get those 2 finally do a yuri kiss in a anime), love power over 9000, etc.

really one best finale ever really great to watch.

overall this series is spring 2011 hidden goods & worth license & dub in english.

& if go more like enpi-spinoff or s2 yes we're all in for more of it.

Just from the beginning with the Wacky Races reference you could tell this was going to be fucking crazy, but bloody hell, the final part... holy shit... that was glorious.

LOL, what's with the Wacky Races reference? I don't think that was even japanese, wasn't it a Hanna-Barbera series?
Anyway, sucks the series is over. Easily the funniest series of the season and a nice change over all the crap we see in anime these days. We definitely need a second season.

It is, but it's not the first time I've seen a Wacky Races reference in an anime (a SD Gundam episode also featured a Wacky Races parody)Licensed! NIS America.Talk about unexpected. :heh:

Unfortunately, NIS will not dub anything they license:
Mitsu then explained that he understood that NIS's prices were high, but he felt justified in the amount of value they've added to the product, and that they needed to “be responsible” with their business model by not adding English dubs, which would need to be funded by their video game revenue.Mitsu is NIS America's anime business producer.
